Demps, Olah, and Lumpkin. Wonder how Lumpin is improving his game. I assumed he was getting pushed out the line up by Falzon and JVG, but it looks like the team and Coach Collins has a lot of respect for him. I would've liked to have seen McIntosh on there because I always like my PG to be my captain, but he's still a baby.

I'm glad Sanjay is getting this recognition. He is one tough SOB. His minutes may drop somewhat this season but he is a fighter. I loved watching the intensity of Coach Collins in the video:

And BMac will be 22 this season, not exactly MY definition of "still a baby"....he is actually older than Sanjay who just turned 21 this April.

It may in fact be a nod to his great attitude and hard work in the face of potentially losing minutes. Nothing will improve the team more than a guy who is making progress being replaced by a guy who his making more progress.

I have wondered about this and am curious to know what people think. Was BMac's success last year as a rookie relative to his age? and does that mean he may be closer to his upside potential than guys like Law?

That is an interesting fact about BMac that I would not have guessed looking at his body type. That means he was 20 when he started practicing at NU. Well, from the photos that I have seen this summer he has added some muscle which hopefully, will help him endure the grind of the Big 10 conference schedule. I see BMac's age as a plus because he might be more mature than a typical 19-20 year old. Also, the Steph Curry camp might help his confidence.

I like the choices of captain. Lumpkin's minutes might decline but he will be a key player in practice and in his minutes as a defensive stopper. I see his toughness wearing off on Tap, Skelly, Falzon, Pardon, etc.

I believe BMac is 20. That would have made him 20 in his senior year which in most states makes athletes ineligible for high school competition.

It does mean he was closer to his physical prime coming out of HS than a younger player. Bodies hit that prime in the late 20's to early 30s. With that said, this was McIntosh's first offseason with a college strength and conditioning coach. That will help him. Don't see him being a top end athlete but Larry Bird and Magic Johnson weren't either.

Was his success due to his age? I don't think so. His success was due to being a smart player that played within his abilities, ran the offense, and made plays when he had to. Did he get smarter from 18-20? Probably. So does his age have anything to do with it? Ok probably. But I see him being even smarter next year with Chris, the assistant coaches, Doug Collins, and the NBA MVP working with him this offseason. He'll understand the system better. He'll know the players around him better.

So basically, McIntosh did develop between 18 and 20 and I would expect to see less of a jump between last year and this year than if he were an 18 year old freshman, but I still expect to see a big jump given the strength program and the coaching he received.

where is it listed that Bryant turns 22 this year? He played for the Eric Gordon 15-and-under team in summer of 2011.

I see no significance with Sanjay's ordainment as Captain, with playing time. Sobo was a two year captain.

Sanjay will have a role on this team. He's too good a rebounder and defender to not play at all. He's athletic enough to play a small-ball 5 in spots, though that's something we'll probably see more in '16-'17 after Olah and JVZ hit the road.

I would not read too much into it. The team will have 2 seniors (three with the transfer) and 2 Juniors. Sanjay is in the top three in seniority. Logical choice.

Not sure if my post made it. I would not read too much into it as Sanjay is in the top three in seniority with the team and he works hard.. Logical choice at this point.

How about this idea for Sanjay: Play some minutes at SG which was his position out at HS at 6'5" and maybe become a defensive stopper instead of guarding guys who are 3-5 inches taller than him like Brandon Dawson or Aaron White or Gabe Olesheni or guarding a 7' like Adam Woodbury.

While it is better on the defensive side, and definitely helps us with rebounding, we still need O and unless his O improves, who is he going to replace? Demps, Lindsey, Ash would be the expected guys. What about ball handling? We already have more of a combo guard at point.

I can see it for a few minutes as a change of pace, but I am not sure you can do it for too many minutes unless he at least improves his offense

I agree with you but in short minutes, it might be a thought. Particularly against teams with a number of SGs/SFs like UM (Irvin, LaVert, Dawkins, Rakman, etc.). Or MSU is a wide SG like Valentine.

i think the players vote on the captains, or have a major say, so that is telling for who made it and who didn't

I think that's a decent idea but the wrong position. Law will start at the 3, but we could definitely see Lumpkin or Taphorn being the back up based on whether we're looking for offense or defense at the time. It may even be a matter of Lumpkin plays with Falzon who's a shooter while Taphorn plays when JVG is at the 4 to stretch the floor a bit.

I assumed Law and Lindsey would be battling for time at the 3 but I think it'll Lindsey at the 2 behind Demps.

I agree about Lindsey. He's a 2. Lots of options at the 3 with Law, Tap, Lump and Falzon. But it will be interesting to see what CC does at the 4: does he start JvZ with Skelly off the bench, or go with Law and Falzon up front with JvZ behind Olah? Nice problem to have!

van zegeren, pardon, and olah are 5's... skelly can do both but don't expect jvz and olah starting anything soon

A major problem with our team for the past two years is that we did not have a PF who could hit an open jump shot. That is why Falzon was recruited. He can hit jump shots and is the prototype stretch 4. If he plays as advertised then he should step in and start at the four and open up the lane for Olah and penetration for Demps and maybe allow Law some more space. When Lump was in his man could cheat off him and clog the middle.

I think its fair to say that Lumpkin sits as a fallback option at both forward positions, and that something will have gone wrong (injuries at either spot, Falzon not being ready, JVZ having a Buzz Williams-like relationship with the NU staff [though indications are that's a Buzz thing, not a JVZ thing]) he's getting more than five minutes on a regular basis.

In my opinion, Sanjay will have done his job this season if Tap, Lindsay, Demps, someone winds up with an unexplained black eye from practice.

From the few highlights of Falzon I have seen, he is obviously a very good outside shooter and will be able to stretch the floor once he gets comfortable. He's not a big kid for the 4, though, and he doesn't appear to be especially athletic. I will be very interested to see if he can hang down low on defense and the boards. Collins said he was more concerned about improving our defense this year so that will likely determine whether he gets a lot of minutes or comes in when we need a spark on offense. Maybe we can get by with a smaller 4 since Law is such a good rebounder and has the potential to be a great defender.
