I listened to it the other day. I thought overall he came across very well spoken, not lacking confidence while not coming across as arrogant.
I’m not one to pick on every word or impression from a 20something year old, but I wish he spoke with more of a team first tone and more invested in building relationships with teammates (more leadership-type speak).
But that’s just being a little picky. It was just an interview.
Interesting how he made subtle hint of NIL deal/potential. Not surprising obviously, but just weird to see the new era.
That’s good to hear. I love it.
He does seem hungry in a quiet, understated way.
Speaking of OL, the only time he lost a little credibility in the interview was when he was looking for the right fit, and first thing he did was look at our OL and who is returning.
haha! Like, hey man if you’re looking at OL to be a good fit for you, you may want to consider other schools.
But I’m super happy we got him. Oft-discussed, but he can make our OL look better by making timely decisions (something that stood out in his film). Plus, despite losing Jurgens our room is a year older and hopefully getting better coaching. We also got 2 experienced OL transfers to shake up the competition.
Right. Glad no one explained to him the difference between experience and quality experience.
When you look at the level of recruits we brought in for our O line and the fact that we fired our O line coach, it was probably pretty obvious to him that the O line wasn't very well coached. As several have pointed out this past couple of weeks, the fact that both Jaimes and Farniok were on NFL active rosters points to the coaching being a problem. Add to it that it's fairly likely that Jurgens will be on an active roster next fall as well. I think we had more than enough talent there to be way better than what they were.
I'm just glad we landed a likely looking prospect with P5 experience and his skill set. Who knows how it turns out but at least there is some comfort knowing we were able to get a couple of highly thought of QBs. Our fans' heads will explode if Smothers trots out as the starter next fall....
could you imagine how many years it would take to get the qb stable we have now, without the portal?
to me it seems like if your a great or nfl type qb it will show eventually.....over a course of a 5 year college career.
sane coaches will not bench a player who can put up W's...(unless he's a head case/ bad for team moral)
Idk man. He didn't mention it in an interview so his leadership is still questionable.

“Under (Texas coach) Steve Sarkisian, Casey looks like a guy who just wants to pass,” the elder Thompson said. “I think he has much more to offer, and that was one of the things that attracted us to Nebraska. At Texas, the Sark team, it didn’t really like the quarterback running.“When you go back and look at Casey first entering college, he was considered just a runner. The first couple years at Texas, no one talked about his passing. It was all about his running ability under (Tom) Herman. He was never given credit for how good of a passer he was.”
In terms of how Nebraska views a running QB (and Charles of course would understand this), his college stats are not a calling card for a running QB. But he ran for just over 3000 yards in HS, averaging 6 yds/carry. Not that I am pining for a QB focused run game. Martinez has been our most productive runner for two years and obviously the results speak for themselves. Losses and a very injured QB at the end of the season.
But Thompson has the skills to take the yardage when it's there.

Serious here...name a better player on our roster. This kid has IT - confidence, leadership, and isn't a hoorah type guy. He will get on some players if not up to snuff.

in this interview, he also talks about how coaches 'laid out their plan' for him, which I interpreted as, him being told he would likely be the starter or something to that effect. You can hear it at 28:45.. If normally you have to compete with everyone else, why would you need to discuss a plan about it? So it's pretty obvious to me that's what it's about.
Maybe.. but my concern is that nothing has really changed from the formula that got us in this spot in the first place. That's all. It looks a lot like the same, so I'm a bit skeptical, maybe too much. Actually surprised everyone else just takes the bait and runs with it to be honest.
Nothing has changed? Really? EVERY coach when recruiting a player "lays out" what the plan is for that guy. It's called recruiting. With the hiring of Whipple and Joseph, the formula has COMPLETELY changed. Frost has his marching orders now from Trev on how this is going to be done and he's given up control of the offense which BTW is something he tried to do by giving the play calling to Lubick. That didn't work. This at least has a shot to work with a QB who seems to have a higher football IQ than the last guy did.
