Based solely on this season's results to date & taking into account our improvement vs. recent years, Collins should definitely be in the discussion. While not part of the "Coach of the Year" discussion, I give a ton of credit to the players and the rest of the coaching staff--Chris Lowrey in particular. Beat Ohio State.

is there a parallel to the Broyles award for the best assistant coach in hoops? If so, Chris Lowery has to be a lock - except that Hank should've won it two years ago and we got screwed that time too...

Chris Lowery has obviously had an important impact this season – the broadcasters tonight talked about how much Collins mentioned it to them. But it also wasn't a John Beilein hiring Luke Yaklich situation. This team is currently ranked third-best in KenPom defense in Collins’ tenure. They almost always defended at a competitive level to begin with. I'm inclined to give Collins more credit than simply hiring the right guy (not saying you're not).

Not arguing your point, but the reason the defense has been this great this year imo has been the buy-in from Chase and Boo, especially Boo. He works so hard jumping over screens or jumping out on switches, and I didn't see that kind of effort from him in the past. Chase was always a good one on one defender, but he's now even better as a team defender than he's ever been.
