Exactly. The guy prolly loves his chosen career path of coaching over sitting around doing nothing.
10 million dollar buyout, I bet I would enjoy doing nothing for a while but doing nothing when you are a millionaire and doing nothing when you are not are two different things.
Sounds like Strong is a more driven individual then. Or he understands that money does not always equate happiness. Especially if his passion is to coach.
I doubt it. After the debacle at texass I am sure he wants to begin the process asap making his way back up again.
If he wants to coach that much then don't accept a salary from USF. 
At least that way Texas would be playing him to coach South Florida. That would be rich. No pun intended. NOT.

That's probably true. His drive and desire to succeed and do what he loves looks to be more important to the man than just money.
Perhaps a few came calling and USF was the better option than just sitting out a year like most thought he would. Take a job at a lower tier program now because a year from now the only job offfers might be for DC positions. After being a HC for a while I doubt his first choice would be to return to being a DC unless he had to.
His UT buyout calls for UT to be able to reduce their payout by only half of his new salary.
So if he gets $3 Million from USF, his UT buyout reduces from $5 Million to $3.5 Million.
Makes his annual total $6.5 Million for two years.
That was implemented three years ago to give him the guarantee of $5 Million and to give him incentive to actively pursue a new position.

He probably should have started his first HC gig at a school like USF, then after a few seasons, move on to a big-time program like the one in Arrogantville, I mean Austin.
He did. Strong was the HC at Louisville before going to Austin. He did a damn solid job at Louisville.

Why did Strong fail at Cal-Austin? Could it be LHN and all the detracting responsibilities that goes with it? I've heard that Brown was put out with the LHN albatross.
Strong was a 'tweener' coach. Seldom, very seldom does a coach follow another coach that has been around for a long period of time, and do it w/ success. Strong was the Coach to go in, change the culture from Mackie. It will be a lot easier for Herman than it was for Strong. Strong has flushed out much of the Mackie supporters, players etc. Having said this, I don't think Herman will be given the same time frame as Strong.
I think he jumped at the USF job as his iron is still hot. Sitting out a year or two might slow down callers for his services. Although, getting some UT money did not hurt his decision.

Do nothing the next 2 years, and he makes $10M.
His USF contract is $9.8M for 5 years. $1M each the first 2 years.
Texas gets to subtract 50% of his new salary from severance; that would be $500,000 each the first 2 years, or $1M.
So Texas severance becomes $9M and his USF salary the first 2 years is $2M = $11M. $11M > $10M
None of you guys would coach college football for 2 years while ONLY getting paid $1M?
Then he's already found himself a job that is going to pay him another $7.8M over the next 3 years; $2.6M/yr.
That ain't bad. And he's a South Florida guy, so he might actually do well down there and instead of sitting on his *** becoming obsolete, he could be building another resume for another Power 5 conference team.

Joey Knight of the Tampa Bay Times has the full details. As you will see, Strong’s new five-year, $9.8 million deal is rather heavily backloaded, likely due to the structure of the Texas buyout he’ll be receiving.
