Big Blue Preview: 2016 Opponent Breakdown
Southern Miss Golden Eagles
2015 Record: 9-5, 7-1 (C-USA)
Head Coach: Jay Hopson (1st season)
Biggest Strength: A talented backfield featuring QB Nick Mullens and RB Ito Smith.
Biggest Question Mark: How much will the departure of Head Coach Todd Monken hurt the Golden Eagles?
BBP Win Expectancy: 60%

Team Summary: Former Head Coach Todd Monken resurrected the Golden Eagles back to relevance in 2015 after several down years but bolted for the NFL following the season, becoming the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Offensive Coordinator. However, the cupboard in Hattiesburg was not left bare and USM has ample weaponry to compete for the CUSA title in 2016. A familiar, perhaps infamous name to Big Blue fans will make his debut as the Golden Eagle’s Offensive Coordinator. Shannon Dawson was hired by first year Head Coach Jay Hopson (formerly HC at Alcorn State) to run the offense despite coming off a lackluster year in Lexington as UK’s OC. Wide Receiver D.J. Thompson will provide Mullens at least one solid target and a slew of JUCO WR transfers look to figure into the receiving corps mix for Dawson’s attack. The Golden Eagles’ defense returns several solid pass rushers including DE Dylan Bradley who finished with 6.5 sacks in 2015.

Bottom Line: Jay Hopson inherits a talented two deep roster and the Golden Eagles seem poised for a solid 2016 campaign provided the program doesn’t falter in the wake of Monken’s departure. USM will provide a tougher test for Big Blue than a typical opening game opponent.

Prediction: In what will undoubtedly be a raucous atmosphere at Commonwealth Stadium for the 7:30 PM kickoff, BBP looks for the Cats to come into 2016 with a bang. The fact former maligned OC Shannon Dawson is on the opposite sideline will not be lost on any of the Cats and I expect many offensive players to see this opportunity as a personal invitation to “stick it” to their former play caller. New Wildcat OC Eddie Gran will have the offense clicking and the Defense will stymie the Golden Eagles enough for Big Blue to open the season with a 42-28 win over Brett Favre’s alma mater.

Florida Gators
2015 Record: 10-4, 7-1 (SEC)
Head Coach: Jim McElwain (2nd season)
Biggest Strength: A defense loaded with playmakers like CB Jalen Tabor.
Biggest Question Mark: Will one of the JUCO transfers step up and adequately fill the void at QB?
BBP Win Expectancy: 35%

Team Summary: Jim McElwain’s first season at the helm of the Gators was a success by any objective measure. Coming off a 7-5 campaign in 2014, McElwain stepped in leading the Gators to a 7-1 mark in the SEC in 2015 and a berth in the SEC title game. A lopsided bowl loss to Michigan aside, the Gators 2015 season was a big improvement over 2014 and could’ve been even better if not for the PED related suspension and subsequent transfer (to West Virginia) of QB Will Grier. In Grier’s absence, the Gator’s struggled at QB with Treon Harris (also departed) who failed to complete 50% of his passes in 6 of their final 7 games. In come transfer QBs Luke Del Rio (Oregon State) and Austin Appleby (Purdue) who will vie for the starting job. If Del Rio, who is the son of Raiders Head Coach Jack Del Rio can provide steady QB play the Gators can lean on their stout defense and should again be poised to contend for the SEC East crown. UF’s offense will feature star WR Antonio Calloway and a bruising JUCO RB transfer in 230 pound Mark Thompson. An athletic, rangy defense which was 8th in the nation in total defense last year is poised to pick up right where it left off. Despite losing multiple players to the NFL the Gators have plenty returning to pick up the slack, including a projected top 10 pick at CB in Jalen Tabor.

Bottom Line: If Luke Del Rio emerges as an adequate QB and the Gators’ defense continues its stingy ways UF should again compete for the SEC East crown. Also keep an eye on JUCO transfer kicker Eddy Pineiro who will look to improve on the Gators dreadful 7-17 conversion rate on field goals from 2015. BBP thinks Pineiro’s powerful leg will be needed for at least one late game bomb if the Gators hope to get back to Atlanta.

Prediction: The Cats have not beaten the Gators since 1987 and BBP does not see that changing this year. 2014 and 2015 saw the Cats poised to end the decades long losing streak but a win did not materialize in either game for Big Blue. Members of Big Blue Nation undoubtedly cringe at the thought of the play clock fiasco from late in the 2014 game and think of what might’ve been. This year BBP sees the Gators stingy defense standing tough at home and limiting the Cats en route to a close victory. However, the shaky QB situation and the promise of a powerful offense for UK make this contest far from a foregone conclusion despite it being held at The Swamp. BBP says Gators 24, Cats 17, but keep an eye on this game as a potential upset chance for Stoops and company.

New Mexico State Aggies
2015 Record: 3-9, 3-5 (Sun Belt)
Head Coach: Doug Martin (4th season)
Biggest Strength: RB Larry Rose III
Biggest Question Mark: Can the Aggies horrific defense, which allowed over 500 yards per game improve enough to make NMSU respectable?
BBP Win Expectancy: 90%

Team Summary: Former UK Head Coach and Air Raid pioneer Hal Mumme roamed the sidelines in Las Cruces from 2005 to 2008 compiling a dreadful 11-38 record as the Aggies’ Head Coach; and not much has improved for NMSU since. The Aggies have not won more than 4 games since 2004 and worse yet are being booted from the Sun Belt following the 2017 season. Essentially the Aggies must use this period as an audition in hopes another league invites them to join. RB Larry Rose III ran for over 1100 yards as a freshman last season and should be the Aggies best offensive weapon. A host of JUCO defensive lineman hope to shore up a porous defense that was among the worst in the FBS las year.

Bottom Line: The Aggies have not made a bowl game since 1960 and their 55 bowl-less years make UK’s current 5 season bowl drought feel like mere minutes in comparison. Despite signs of life late in the 2015 season, 2016 looks to be another rough year for NMSU.

Prediction: Drew Barker, Boom Williams and company should feast on the sieve-like Aggie defense. BBP expects an offensive explosion from the Cats that gives the Commonwealth Stadium scoreboard circuitry a workout. Cats win in a 56-10 romp that sees Big Blue improve to 2-1 on the year.

South Carolina Gamecocks
2015 Record: 3-9, 1-7 (SEC)
Head Coach: Will Muschamp (1st season)
Biggest Strength: A Muschamp-guided front seven featuring DE Marquavius Lewis.
Biggest Question Mark: Can true freshman QB Brandon McIlwain win the starting job and perform adequately for the Gamecocks?
Vegas:
BBP Win Expectancy: 57%

Team Summary: A disastrous 2015 coupled with the exit of the Ol’ Ball Coach Steve Spurrier leaves the Gamecocks in a precarious position for 2016. In comes SEC veteran Will Muschamp as head coach to attempt to right the ship in Columbia. In order for the Gamecocks to improve, the offensive output from 2015 (22 points per game) must increase significantly. Questions abound: can true freshman dual threat QB Brandon McIlwain win the starting job and provide a spark for the offense? Is there enough talent for the Cocks to compete? The team’s top receiver from last season Pharoh Cooper bolted early for the NFL and the SC’s top defender LB Skai Moore is sidelined all year with a neck injury. Look for a ground and pound approach on offense behind RB David Williams and a disciplined, yet aggressive approach from the defense as they acclimate to Muschamp’s style.

Bottom Line: While recruiting has been on the rise since Muschamp took the reins and SC has been restocking with talent for the future (including former Cats DT commit Kobe Smith) there is likely not enough available for the Gamecocks to go bowling in 2016. Brandon McIlwain who has also signed to play baseball for SC looks like the real deal at QB but will likely need more time and more weapons before he can flourish in the Palmetto State.

Prediction: Steve Spurrier will be thrashing his visor into submission from the comfort of his living room as the impotent Cocks’ offense is held in check at Commonwealth. A steady dose of Boom Williams and JoJo Kemp (will we see him in the Wildcat formation ala 2014?) coupled with steady play from Barker will power Big Blue to their third straight win over East rival South Carolina. BBN improves to 3-1 on the year with a 24-10 victory at home.

Alabama Crimson Tide
2015 Record: 14-1, 7-1 (SEC)
Head Coach: Nick Saban (10th season)
Biggest Strength: An absolutely loaded roster with more talent than anyone in the SEC (except maybe Calipari’s Cats).
Biggest Question Mark: Who will take over the starting QB job following the departure of Jake Coker?
BBP Win Expectancy: 3%

Team Summary: Alabama is a college football superpower and despite losing a ton of talent to the NFL Draft the Tide perennially restock with elite players; this year is no exception. Explosive WR Calvin Ridley is coming off a 1,000 yard, 7 TD freshman season and should pick up right where he left off. Gone is 2015 Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry, meaning Damien Harris, the former Madison Southern standout and one time coveted UK target should finally get a chance for more usage in his sophomore season. However, Harris will have to compete with his bruising 240 pound backfield mate Bo Scarbrough for his share of the rock-toting duties. LB Reuben Foster will lead the always elite Tide defense and should deliver plenty of big hits to opposing ball carriers. Despite former DC Kirby Smart leaving to take the head job at Georgia the defense is fully loaded and should not skip a beat in 2016. One question mark for Bama is at the QB position. 6’3, 230 pound Redshirt Jr. Cooper Bateman looks like the favorite to win the job but he will have to stave off David Cornwell and Jalen Hurts to do so.

Bottom Line: Alabama once again has all the tools necessary to win the College Football Playoff and frankly anything else would be a disappointment for Tide fans. Provided that Cooper Bateman can adequately manage the offense the sky is the limit for the Tide.

Prediction: The last time UK beat Alabama was 1997, Tim Couch completed a 26-yard touchdown pass to Craig Yeast in overtime as Kentucky stunned the Tide, 40-34, on Saturday night at Commonwealth. BBP predicts that the ’97 will remain the last time UK has beaten Alabama following their meeting this year in Tuscaloosa. Alabama wins the battle in the trenches on both sides of the ball as their defense stifles the Cats on the way to a 42-13 victory.

Vanderbilt Commodores
2015 Record: 4-8, 2-6 (SEC)
Head Coach: Derek Mason (3rd season)
Biggest Strength: Defense. The Commodore defense is a stout, SEC caliber unit led by linebackers Zach Cunningham and Nigel Bowden.
Biggest Question Mark: Can the Vandy offense improve upon their dreadful 2015 numbers?
BBP Win Expectancy: 55%

Team Summary: In 2015, Vandy’s offense averaged just 327 yards and 15.2 points per game, numbers that made even Shannon Dawson’s “Air Raid” look like something seen on a Madden video game. The Dores must improve on the offensive side of the ball to have a chance at post season play. RB Ralph Webb is the offense’s best weapon (over 1000 yards rushing in 2015) and will be relied upon heavily to move the chains for Derek Mason’s squad. If sophomore QB Kyle Shurmur can give Webb more room to run by forcing opposing defenses to respect the Vandy passing game there could be a significant boost in offensive production. Vandy’s defense will be its strength again this season and linebackers Nigel Bowden and Zach Cunningham should rack up tons of tackles. In the secondary, S Oren Burks and CB Torren McGaster solidify a respectable unit. Vandy will seek to control the clock and lean on their defense, if the offense shows improvement a six win season is not off the table.

Bottom Line: If the offense becomes competent in 2016, Vandy’s defense should be strong enough for them to make a serious run at bowl eligibility. The Dores matchup with UK will play a huge part in determining if they are able to reach 6 wins.

Prediction: After UK’s debacle in Nashville last season the Cats will be well-prepared when the Commodores arrive in Lexington on October 8th. BBP can also virtually guarantee the Cats will not throw multiple fade routes from shotgun formation with the ball on Vandy’s 1 yard line. This win is a must have for Big Blue if bowl eligibility is to be achieved and UK will play as such. Expect Eddie Gran to solve the Vandy defense as the game progresses and the Cats to put up close to 30 points for the home fans. UK’s defense will key on Ralph Webb, forcing Shurmur to attempt more passes than Vandy would like. Mark Stoops will also ensure that the Cats are not burned by an (illegal questionable) fake substitution play this season. BBP sees UK capturing their 4th win of the season by a score of 27 to 20.

Mississippi State Bulldogs
2015 Record: 9-4, 4-4 (SEC
Head Coach: Dan Mullen (8th season)
Biggest Strength: Senior WR Fred Ross should be one of the better pass catchers in the SEC provided there is someone to get him the ball.
Biggest Question Mark: Is there life in Starkville after Dak Prescott?
BBP Win Expectancy: 50%

Team Summary: The departure of do-it-all QB Dak Prescott leaves a big void in the Bulldog offense, as he accounted for over 4,000 yards of total offense and 39 total TDS. Miss. State will likely look to sophomore pro style QB Nick Fitgerald to step in as signal caller. Fitzgerald is not without weapons, senior WR Fred Ross is coming off an 88 catch season and the physical playmaker will present matchup problems for opposing corners. Undersized but shifty speedster Brandon Holloway should see the lion’s share of carries in the backfield, with Aeris Williams backing him up. Peter Sirmon steps in as the third defensive coordinator in as many years but should have an adequate amount of talent to field a strong unit. DE A.J. Jefferson and DT Nick James should be disruptive along the defensive front, while highly talented LB Richie Brown will patrol the middle. Keep an eye on RS sophomore safety Brandon Bryant to emerge as a playmaker following a stellar spring.

Bottom Line: The Bulldogs must find a way to replace the Dak attack on offense in order to be successful. Fitzgerald developing a solid connection with Fred Ross could go a long way in accomplishing this. If the defense can acclimate to their new coaching staff the bulldogs could be in position for a solid season. BBP sees the Bulldogs taking a small step back this season and finishing with 7 wins.

Prediction: A well-rested Wildcats team coming off a bye week will be in prime position at home against Mississippi State. Look for a big game from Boom Williams to power the Big Blue offense and Chris Westry to hold Fred Ross in check as Stoops picks up perhaps his biggest win thus far during his tenure in Lexington. BBP sees a back and forth battle in Lexington with the Cats all but assuring a bowl berth with a late score for a come from behind 27-21 win.

Missouri Tigers
2015 Record: 5-7, 1-7 (SEC)
Head Coach: Barry Odom (1st season)
Biggest Strength: Despite losses on the front seven, a talented group led by DE Charles Harris should make Missouri’s defense a formidable unit.
Biggest Question Mark: Can the Tiger offense become serviceable after averaging just 13.6 points per game last season?
BBP Win Expectancy: 50%

Team Summary: Gary Pinkel is gone after a 15 year stint as the head coach in Columbia after revealing he was diagnosed with lymphoma. Former Tiger linebacker and 2015 defensive coordinator Barry Odom will take over the head coaching job in Columbia. Oklahoma national title winning QB Josh Heupel was brought in over the offseason to run an offense that was among the worst in the SEC in 2015. Heupel will entrust the signal-calling duties to sophomore QB Drew Lock, who must improve upon a lackluster freshman season for Mizzou to have success. A talented Missouri defense was dealt a tough blow as two key players were recently lost for the year. DT Harold Brantley, a standout in 2014 who sat out last season due to injury was ruled academically ineligible for the season, while 2015 co-leader in sacks, DE Walter Brady, has been dismissed from the team for a violation of policy. Despite the losses, the defense is still full of talent, including DE Charles Harris who finished 2015 with 18.5 tackles for loss.

Bottom Line: Missouri will hope that QB Drew Lock and RB Alex Ross can return the Tiger offense to respectability. A relatively light out of conference schedule bodes well for the Tigers becoming bowl eligible but much will depend on how quickly the team can mesh with so many new faces calling the shots from the sidelines. If Missouri can reach six wins their season would be considered successful in the eyes of BBP.

Prediction: With the Cats sitting at 5-2 and a date with FCS lightweight Ausitn Peay looming the Missouri game isn’t vital for bowl eligibility per se. However, if the Cats were to stumble in one of their previous games this contest would become much more significant. The Cats have won just one road game in the Mark Stoops era but BBP thinks win number 2 could happen this season at Faurot Field. In what will essentially be a toss up, look for the Cats to lean on Boom Williams and a steady dose of CJ Conrad to pace the offense. The UK defense will bend but not break and Big Blue will be bowl bound after a 21-17 victory.

Georgia Bulldogs
2015 Record: 10-3, 5-3 (SEC)
Head Coach: Kirby Smart (1st season)
Biggest Strength: A talented defense, led from the secondary by Dominick Sanders and Quincy Mauger.
Biggest Question Mark: Can blue chip freshman QB Jacob Eason be the real deal in year one?
BBP Win Expectancy: 35%

Team Summary: After 15 years in Athens Mark Richt and UGA mutually agreed to part ways following the 2015 season. Former Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is now the head man between the hedges and inherits a talented roster that is also full of questions. Five star QB recruit Jacob Eason stayed true to his Georgia pledge following Richt’s departure and had a great spring. The highly talented freshman will compete with veteran game manager Greyson Lambert for the starting job. At RB Nick Chubb will look to return to the field following a significant knee injury against Tennessee last season. Sony Michel is also waiting in the wings at RB and could provide an electric 1-2 punch with Chubb or if Chubb is unable to go Michel could power the offense himself. Last year the Dawgs’ defense was ranked 7th nationally in total defense and first against the pass. A talented safety duo of Dominick Sanders and Quincy Mauger are back and will lead a stingy defense that is chock full of young talent ready to contribute.

Bottom Line: The Dawgs are primed to compete for the SEC East crown. If Jacob Eason can perform up to his billing as a true freshman and Chubb and Michel continue to churn up yardage on the ground UGA can get to Atlanta.

Prediction: A Cats team content with bowl eligibility will have to tangle at home with a physical Georgia squad and BBP sees this one going to the Dawgs. Eason will have more than half a season of experience under his belt and the Georgia backs will gallop for plenty of yardage at Commonwealth. Barker is likely to struggle against the tough Georgia secondary and points could be scarce for Big Blue this week. This game is by no means a UGA lock but look for Kirby Smart’s squad to leave town with a 31-17 victory.

Tennessee Volunteers
2015 Record: 9-4, 5-3 (SEC)
Head Coach: Butch Jones (4th season)
Biggest Strength: QB Josh Dobbs can do it all, if he gets some help the Vols will be special.
Biggest Question Mark: Will a loaded Vols’ offense finally begin to fire on all cylinders?
BBP Win Expectancy: 15%

Team Summary: QB Josh Dobbs is a talented SEC veteran absolutely surrounded by playmakers. On the ground Jalen Hurd is a beast and should continue to pile up yardage between the tackles, Alvin Kamara will get his share of carries for the Vols as well and the two make for the SEC’s best backfield. Josh Smith, Josh Malone and Preston Williams headline a star studded receiving corps that will give Dobbs plenty of targets. Additionally, UT returns four starters along the offensive line. On defense, NFL DE Derek Barnett is a legit NFL talent and a disruptive force that should live in opposing backfields. In the secondary, lockdown corner Cameron Sutton will be asked to go one on one with the conferences best WRs. Overall the defensive unit is talent laden and experienced.

Bottom Line: UT is the SEC East favorite. If UT can finally put it all together and perform to their talent under Butch Jones, BBP sees the Vols as a possible SEC Champion and CFP contender.

Prediction: Matt Roark isn’t walking through that door for Big Blue and a tough Saturday at Neyland is likely in store. A two headed rushing attack of Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara, coupled with a few deep balls from Josh Dobbs will give the UT offense plenty of points. On D the Vols should be able to get pressure on Drew Barker and keep Boom Williams and Jojo Kemp contained. BBP sees the Vols winning big 49-10.

Austin Peay Governors
2015 Record: 0–11, 0–8 (OVC)
Head Coach: Will Healy (1st season)
Biggest Strength: The offensive line should be the strength of the Austin Peay squad in 2016.
Biggest Question Mark: Can the Governors win a game in 2016?
BBP Win Expectancy: 99%

Team Summary: The Govs have won only 1 game in the past three years and are coming off a winless 2015 campaign. New head coach Will Healy spent the offseason introducing an up-tempo scheme he plans to employ in Clarksville. Further, Healy added the 5th ranked class in FCS (132nd overall) so the talent level available for the Governors should be on the rise. While there is hope for the future, 2016 should be another rough year for a team that has gone 1-34 since 2013. RBs Kendall Morris and Marvin Franklin should be the team’s primary options on offense.

Bottom Line: Austin Peay will look to build up the program with their new head coach but growing pains should be plentiful in 2016.

Prediction: The Cats will light up the scoreboard against their overmatched OVC bottom-dweller foes and improve their bowl positioning with a coveted 7th win. BBP sees the Cats seizing control for good midway through the first quarter and coasting through the second half on the way to a 58-7 win.

Louisville Cardinals
2015 Record: 8-5, 5-3 (ACC)
Head Coach: Bobby Petrino (3rd season)
Biggest Strength: Speedster QB Lamar Jackson has all the physical tools and should provide the Cards plenty of firepower if he can remain healthy.
Biggest Question Mark: Can Lamar Jackson limit turnovers and stay healthy?
BBP Win Expectancy: 49%

Team Summary: In 2014 Petrino rode his motorcycle back in to town and appears to have the Cards once again on the right track. The offense will be led by QB Lamar Jackson, who possesses all world speed and excellent arm strength. If Jackson can remain healthy and become a more polished passer he will continue to dazzle. A powerful stable of RBS including Brandon Radcliffe, Jeremy Smith and LJ Scott will share the ball carrying duties behind Jackson. UofL has ample pass catching options including talented WR Jamari Staples and a sure handed TE in Cole Hikutini. Despite losing Sheldon Rankins and James Burgess to the NFL, defensive coordinator Todd Grantham has a bevy of talent at his disposal. DE Devonte Fields should terrorize opposing QBs, while veterans Trumaine Washington, Shaq Wiggins and Josh Harvey-Clemons patrol the secondary.

Bottom Line: The Cards are loaded with talent and if Lamar Jackson stays healthy they could vie for the ACC Atlantic crown.

Prediction: UK comes into Papa Johns Stadium sitting at 7-4 and unlike the previous two seasons does not need a win over their in state rival for a bowl bid. BBP sees this as a fortunate occurrence. While the Cats have outplayed the Cards for most of their past two meetings, Lamar Jackson entered a rainy Commonwealth stadium for then starter and Lexington product Kyle Bolin in 2015 and rushed for 186 yards on his way to Governor’s Cup MVP honors. Jackson will again use his legs to propel the Cardinal offense and frustrate opposing tacklers. A talented UofL front seven could make it difficult for Drew Barker and Boom Williams to get going in this one. BBP sees the Cards winning 31-21 but UK is NEVER out of it in this rivalry.

Bowl Projection

The Cats are going bowling for the first time under Mark Stoops after a 7-5 regular season. BBP says book a ticket for Memphis as the Cats will head to the Liberty Bowl. Boom Williams earns Liberty Bowl MVP as the Cats knock off the Texas Longhorns and former UofL Coach Charlie Strong.

Good analysis. I also see 7-5 and a bowl in Nashville, Memphis or perhaps Birmingham. However, if an upset of Florida or UofL is realized, the 8-4 Cats go further south. I also believe like many other OP 2017 and 2018 are seasons the program truly competes on a level playing with the majority of the SEC. Then, Kentucky kids like Jedrick Wills and Damien Harris stay home.

I think UK's roster will be the best it has ever been in 2017. Provided we win at least 6 this year, 2017 has the potential to be very special in my opinion.

I don't understand what this is. Is it some sort of defense mechanism to prevent you from being disappointed? If you're so fragile, why don't you stay on the BB board, or better yet, don't follow sports?

I love reading these write ups because if lets me know it is very close, but any honest predictions before Week 3 is a shot in the wind. We will see what these CATS are made of in the first two games.
