That microfracture surgery he had to undergo on the knee guaranteed he was never going to be one of the greats. Subsequent injuries have only impaired him further.
Think you are letting him off a little easy. When he was totally healthy, there were technique things that he never addressed that kept him from making more plays. Has always played too high and always goes for the head shot. This results in missed tackles and sacks. He is consistently one of the top guys in QB Pressures. Doesn't have the raw stats to show for it because he hits too high. It's great for the highlight, but ends up in inconsistent performance.

He got a nice contract from the Panthers but didn't perform.
He led the Panthers in sacks and TFL, didn't he? (I thought I read that somewhere). Regardless, they're making salary cap room. Restructuring the whole team at this point. They bad!

Don't get me wrong-I love Clowney but 5.5 sacks wasn't cutting it for the money he got. You are right too-the Panthers are awful.

Valid points. Clowney's been a journey man in the NFL and has had some short stints with teams but always gets a new deal it seems probably for his explosive ability to get in the backfield-even if it doesn't translate to many sacks.

I'm glad to go harder on anyone you think I ought to censure more severely since I tend that way anyhow. I could start by saying he laid down his final year in Columbia because I wouldn't be lying. He flat withheld himself at one point.
