Cal staying a little longer than what many expected actually sets up for Antigua to take the spot should he have moderate success. The big knock on him before was that he had no head coaching experience. If Cal were to stay 6 more years that gives Orlando a chance to build up USF (SFU?) and maybe even get a higher profile job for a couple years. If this were to happen I would be happy with them bringing him back to follow Cal.
He would need more than moderate success imo. He is a long way from being ready for UK.
I agree. I expect our next coach to have been to at least one Final Four as a HC.
Do they maybe pick a rebound coach, expecting to only have them for a couple of years before inevitably firing them and making a serious pick? It really doesn't matter who they hire as the next coach IMO because they will not fill Cal's shoes and BBN will be calling for their head.
Billy D Replaces Cal after about 4 years in NBA. 3rd time is a charm he is only one of few that could keep this momentum going IMO.
It will be impossible and our fan base better realize that and give the next person chosen to run the program respect and due time. Things will totally change.

That's not a bad idea, though I'd stretch Cal's time frame out to 8-10 more years, hopefully. Billy looks to be a very healthy 50, right now, so no problem there... and you're right about him being one of the (very!) few. Regardless, whenever the time comes, I think Cal will want to know he's handing it over to the right guy.
Coach Krystkowiak out of Utah would possibly be a good successor. Getting it done there, at a program that isn't used to a whole lot of success. He's young, hasn't been coaching long, and has already came dangerously close to getting in the Final Four.

Can we bring this question up in oh say 10 yrs from now?
I think we'll find a solid guy who has decent success (by the rest of the countries standards) and he'll win between 74 to 76% of his games. That guy will last longer than we want and we'll get us a drunk for a few years and then find us another legend.

If Cal stays ten more years were going to see the end of a lot of other quality coaches careers, the end of a great era of coaches. A lot of top programs will be looking for coaches during the next ten years so now is the time for young coaches to make a name for theirselves .
It would be our best shot at Billy, wouldn't be surprised I he ended back in Florida.
The opening statement by the next UK BB coach will include this: " I am not Coach Cal". Hard act to follow. Like following Rupp. Salute to Coach Hall.
I think Billy D fits that pretty well and he understands our greatness and the strive to be excellent! Like I said 3rd time offered might be the charm. He spends 5-8 years nba give or take gets the pro experience then comes right in can handle the one and done environment. Him and Cal all ways had respect for each other. He would be my first call whenever that day comes. People just butt hurt cause he didn't take the UK job when offered. So what, GET OVER IT! IT wasn't meant to be and we wouldn't have gotten Cal in the first place. That is my first call IMO. Like it or not get over him turning us down it worked out for the better at that time leading us to the Cal era. Yeah we suffered under the DRUNK but it ended up paying off in the long run. Billy D will gain great NBA ex. Coaching the likes of Durant, Westbrook, Kanter, etc... I mean really who else would fill Cal's shoes better? Multiple FF's, back to back titles, now NBA coaching experience. It seems like a no brainer to me. But hey I only watched the game for almost 40 years I don't know squat about it. ppppppffffffffffff
It will be an extremely difficult position to take...the first game the new coach loses people will be burning towns down over it
Calm down. Who even would know if Donovan would be interested in coming back to the college game? He's been flirting with the pros forever before taking his current position. He had back to back titles, but he also had back to back NITs. He's a great coach but he usually has to build up and get a good class that will put some time in. He got it again after the NITS and went to some elite 8s and a final four, then back to terrible again last yr. He did win 70% of his games tho. And since you've been watching basketball for 40 yrs..can you name the primary offense Donovan runs? I can sure tell you.
If it happens in the next 3 or 4 years Donovan is likely the best and most realistic candidate.

The longer a coach like Sean Miller stays at a program like the Zona the less likely he is to leave. Brad Stevens will either be at another college job(Duke) or have had enough success at Boston to not wanna leave perhaps.
If Greg Marshall continues his run at Wichita I think it's likely he'll haven't gotten one of the top jobs.
I don't think Steve Alford will last at UCLA personally. I think in 5 years Marshall is there, Sean Miller is at UNC and Stevens is at Duke

You know more about basketball than you do math. Billy is 50 years old. If Cal stays for 10 more years, how old will Billy be?
No matter who it is half of our fan base will be unhappy. That's the nature of the beast. But it's our beast and I'm glad I'm part of it.

Not for me. Once you turn down the UK job you are non longer an option in the future.
I'm not sure if even Billy D would want to be the next coach at Kentucky. The man doesn't recruit well enough to follow Cal. That works for the Gators, but not Kentucky. I'm sure Billy would recruit better here at Kentucky than at Florida. I would be okay with that hire. I understand no coach could ever recruit like Cal so I sure as heck don't expect the next coach to. The main thing is Kentucky fans will have to change their mindset when it comes to recruiting. We will not be getting as many onendone as we do now and not many schools do or will. We will have to get used to the process of building teams again and not expect kids to come in and be lotto picks after one year. We will need to get used to letting guys get experienced before expecting great things from them. It will take a year or two before Kentucky fans will change their way of thinking about building successful teams again. To be honest, when this happens, I'll probably take a break from these forums until the mindset of Kentucky fans fully changes. It's going to be bad on here for a few years.

Deli owl, I'm so glad you will have no say in who the next coach is cause your way of thinking is just dumb. I bet you had no problem with T Jones helping our cats win the 12 title even though he chose the Huskies over the cats. I bet you just hated every second of Derek Anderson playing for our cats when we wasn't his first choice. To think like that is dumb and if that were the case, we would be without 2 titles. I don't care if they turned us down before or not. It's not about where you start your career at, its about where you finish. Billy would be welcomed back and no one would care about the fact of turning down Kentucky twice if he's successful.
To be honest, Billy Donavan turned me completely off the year the Gators choked an NCAA game away against Louisville. He acted like it didn't bother him much at all. Said something to the effect of that's just the way it goes and that he was happy for Coach Pitino. I remember thinking if I was an A.D., I wouldn't like his acceptance of a total letdown in a tourney game one bit. Happy for Pitino. Really?
