This is the downside to committing to the Heels right now. Joel Berry has been a fine student, but he's always going to be associated with the filth.
Is there any evidence that he or any of their players are taking legitimate classes.It appears that they simply switched their majors to other areas than the AFAM classes
I'm sure they are a least going to class and turning in assignments. There are too many eyes on them to risk it now. Plus, Berry and Jackson are pretty bright. I'm sure they can handle Exercise and Sports Science classes and still have 90% for basketball. It's very easy to get C's in those classes. Much of the tested material is common sense. You can also schedule the 1 or 2 hard courses during your last semester when it doesn't matter. Employers and graduate schools know that a 3.0 in Exercise Science is very easy to attain if you're showing up to class.
UNC doesn't damage their overall academic rep by having easy tracks. As long as they maintain rigor in the top majors, no one will care that some kids are sneaking through with 2.5s in Management and Society. It's not like that degree opens any doors. The UNC family is how they'll get jobs.

Always remember when they were supposedly cleaning their act up a couple years ago by allegedly monitoring basketball players going to class. One of the "so called attendance checkers" was former Tar Heel and '05 AFAM major Melvin Scott.
Scott also had quite a rap sheet and was doing this volunteer assignment while his suspension from coaching hs basketball for a rape charge. Scott was ultimately found innocent, but was guilty of other criminal activity previously.....Yet he was monitoring attendance!

I just looked up the degree requirements for a BA in Communications Studies at UNC. It is no different than what most schools offer except there is plenty of opportunity for independent study and online courses. It depends on how the courses are taught, but it looks incredibly easy to maintain eligibility. This, in and of itself, is similar at other schools (noting Duke's "easiest" majors are harder than this). What UNC did do for twenty years is to not even try to maintain this low level of academic integrity. They were lazy and arrogant. It's no big deal to make your semi pro athletes go to class and become better people. They will need to learn basic reading, writing and speaking no matter what they go on to do. Apparently a few extra hours of practice were more important than living up to the supposed Carolina Way.
Roy definitely knew about the sham classes. He should've demanded more from his school. He did nothing and benefited because of it.

Switched the "clustering" from AFAM to COMM. Same ol' same ol.' Laughable to think they've stopped cheating. It costs nuthin' to boot those responsible , show contrition and change your way of doing business. To date , unx has lawyered up , dragged azz on FOIA requests , been the exact opposite of "transparent" ( despite the proclaimations ) , kept Roy , scapegoated whistleblowers , hired coaches already carrying NCAA violation baggage , challenged NOA's , used every mechanism available to delay this process and spent ( at least! ) 18 million dollars in legal fees. If anything , unx is tellin' the rest of the world to go eff themselves rather than make a legitimate effort to clean up.

I am still frustrated (shocked on one level; totally not shocked on another) that UNC basketball has not had its '05 & '09 titles taken. Or at least one. If Boeheim and Syracuse can be penalized the way they were for their infraction, UNC should be stripped.

The guy who wrote this just sounds like a bitter jerkoff. I have my criticisms of Roy from time to time, but I do believe he is a genuinely good man who cares a great deal for his players, and this guy has the nerve to call him dirty?
I know I'm on a Duke board. I know there will be no love of anything Carolina or anything related to the scandal. Hell, I'm not happy with the way the school has handled this, trying to sweep it under the rug essentially.

This team, like last years team, had nothing to do with what was going on between 02 and 11 or 93 to 11.
I'd be okay with that had the NCAA been consistent like they were with countless other programs and penalized UNC - taking away 05 and 09. But they haven't. So, you deserve no breaks in that regard. You've cheated your way to two titles on the books that are not removed. Why should this team get credit when the whole program is getting by.
To say nothing of the fact that Roy Williams gets away scot free when in fact it was under his watch and he's done nothing but try to defend what even UNC's own respected scholars, like Historian Harry Watson, find utterly appalling.
And I'm not going to blame you for being upset that some sort of punishment hasn't been met out while other schools have gotten hammered. I think the NCAA, athletics, and all of it are pretty ****** in general. I personally believe we should have taken a punishment, a self imposed ban, a scholarship reduction, whatever, early when this was happening. The fact that it happened in the first place is egregious.
But guys like Berry, Jackson, Meeks, etc. they're not the villains here. And I'm not going to trash Roy, ever. Especially not on here.
Honestly , I've never liked Colin either for the exact same reasons you don't. The only reason I ever paid any attention to 'im at all is because he was an early supporter of unx. Used to claim it was a story about "eazy peezy classes" an' nuthin' more. Clearly , he was wrong. That said , there's nothing "baseless" about anything I've said. unx went for years doin' exactly what they wanted when they wanted. All they did was move the cluster. Took Roy's guys outta AFAM an' put 'em in COMM or EXSS. Don't get me wrong. I'm not sayin' those departments are frauds. What I AM sayin' is clustering is clustering. If every one of Roy's kids clustered in , say , Math I'm guessin' he wouldn't have had Wayne Walden look into it. So unx has spent untold millions and not just the 18 they admitted to. Factor in hush money , early retirements , settlements like the one with Willingham , what they paid Wainstein and Martin yada yada yada and all-told the figure is much higher. Anyway , they spend all this money and go thru all these machinations for what? To stop?! Seriously?! Some small-time beat-reporter wants a Pulitzer and some State and Duke fans whine a little bit and they're just gonna up an' quit cold turkey?! Please. smh. First of all a young lady wrote the piece. Secondly to believe Roy is a " genuinely good man" is as you say, the most "baseless" claim I have ever heard.A genuinely good man AND COACH "would give a #hit" as he said to Bonnie Bernstein about getting his kids a good education. There's a superiority factor here, because we got busted for this, it elevates the status of your current program because you now have a moral edge. We did this **** for 18 years and now you hate us even more than you did before.

I chose to root for UNC back when no one knew of any of this. And I'm not going to stop rooting for them because the institution itself is delaying this. Maybe we shouldn't be playing right now. But we are, and I'm damn proud of this team, Roy's coaching, and how far we've come.
And don't act like a natty is a sure thing because it isn't.

I think Roy knew what was going on. If he didn't, well, then his head was completely in the sand. However, I think Roy is a pretty genuine and good, all around guy. I like having some fun at his expense, though.
