Collins keeps things pretty quiet

I read lots of speculation on recruiting and transfers, but Collins seems to have a lot of wheels moving that we don't know about, and guys keep popping out of the woodwork. The concerns about recruiting this past year before 4 solid guys came to the table, were completely unfounded. The worries about grad transfers to fill some holes.

It appears that Collins and his team have lots of puzzle pieces to work with. There is good momentum around the program, the new arena, good recruiting Mojo. Now lets see what we can do with some of these new pieces and start to be a continued threat in the BIG10. We have good interest from the 2020 recruits and program visibility like never before. Its a good time for Wildcat BBall.

Ryan Taylor is evidence the disappointing season hasn't dampened the program's image to recruits. Collins can still sell and the new facilities show recruits the university as a whole wants to invest in them. Things are looking up again, thankfully.

I view this past season as a speed bump. There are still several moving pieces, including finding a replacement for Gates. But I don't doubt Collins and his staff are on top of things, including recruiting heavily.

Before this signing, panic was creeping over the board but, fast as a signature, all that has passed. The problem with NU athletics has always been the recruiting and CCC has shown over and over, that he can recruit for NU. I feel confident we'll all really like the new coach we're getting.

If he signs Mooney, it's time to get him a marble pedestal and laurel wreath.

NU has a Director of Player Development. His name is AJ Guyton who has a 4-year starter at IU, the co-MVP of the Big 10 conference in 2000 and was a all-American in 2000. He was picked by the Bulls in the second round and played in the NBA for 2000-2002. He has strong coaching experience and coached the NBA Developmental League in Chicago and has been in Illinois as a coach for a number of years. I think he will do just fine as an assistant coach if he is selected to fill that role by CC. I am sure that Collins will then fill the Director of Player Development with another talented up and comer. Maybe Christian Laettner would like to tutor our big guys or Cherokee Parks.

As for the direction of the program, it is on a good upward trajectory. All Power 6 basketball teams go through some roster or coaching turnover every year. It did not seem to affect Michigan who lost Billy Donlon to NU as an assistant, lost DJ Wilson to the NBA who was selected in the first round and lost transfers in Andrew Dakich to OSU and Mark Donnell to Clemson. Everything worked out well for the players who transferred and for UM with a Big 10 tournament championship, setting the record for its most wins in a season and five straight wins in the NCAA Tourney and a trip to the finals. Not too shabby for the basketball school known as UM.

Every year brings changes and challenges. Now onto seeing who the 13th scholarship player will be. It has been a fun ride to be a NU b-ball fan over the past 5 seasons.

His recruits just finished 169th!

Maybe let’s grade his awesome recruiting after seasons are over, rather than before they’ve set foot on campus?

He gets an "A" for getting us to the NCAAs. Meanwhile, Cher Ajou played 8mpg for an NAIA team. Who in the world recruited that guy for a B1G team!!??

Steve Alford, Butler, Seton Hall and about 50 others recruited him.

Now Vassar on the other hand...

As the board yo-yo goes up and down, I think what a large number of people here (both critical and strong supporters) forget is that this is still Northwestern.

There's the shiny new arena. The tourney mountain has been climbed. But those big beautiful grade requirements are still sitting out there. What percentage of the top 100 does that automatically eliminate?

You're fooling yourself if you think the NU evolution is complete. You're equally silly if you compare this progression to established programs with season-to-season potential for the hot seat.

Those same recruits also made the NCAA tournament and won a game. They were either successful recruits or they weren’t based on the body of their work.

How many actually offered and signed him?

If your barometer is "which other schools recruited him?," then you would be thrilled to know that Vassar was offered by Illinois, SMU, USC, and UTEP to go with interest from DePaul and Indiana.

Not my barometer, Virginia’s. I was just answering his question.

But you make a good point : I’m always leery of those recruits who only “sign” with one school....

I mean, how good can they be?

Solid avoidance of the inconvenient "nobody else even bothered to offer Ajou" fact.

This is big recruiting class for Collins. Can he follow up last year's strong on paper class with another solid class? Cat's recruiting is a hard follow. No one out there asking recruits loaded questions about attending NU. Last year little info was coming out and then all of a sudden you had two top 100 kids and a kid who probably would have been top 100 but for an injury. Then they finish off the class with a kid who looks like he could easily develop into a contributing big man in a year or two.

Not to return the thread to it's original topic or anything, but I too have noticed how almost secretive CC is on the status of guys he is recruiting. I guess it is no one's business but the recruits so unless the recruit is talkative CC is mum.
One upside of this is he can talk with as many top 50 guys as he wants and never get rejected. Mostly he only gets chosen which is a good spin.

Isn't it a NCAA rule that coaches can't talk about players being recruited until they sign their LOI? Do you ever hear Fitz talking about who HE is recruiting?

Direct answer is no.

But in Collins' first few months his targets and efforts at going after those targets was public knowledge. Now that info has been shutdown like the rainbow flag booth at a Klan convention.

I am not “implying” anything.

I am “saying” he didn’t get only one offer, unless either NU or Seton Hall was unaware he was on their basketball team.... which is unlikely.

Prior to NU, thought he was committed to New Mexico.
