They were going to go with the Cleveland Spiders, a franchise known for being historically bad. Everyone decided that was a bit too spot on.

Spiders is a great name, and that’s the worst team in baseball history. Really dropped the ball IMO.

I was listening to an interview with Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland yesterday who is a Native American and she used the term Indian referring to native Americans, so I'm not sure why this is considered off limits. I can see the case being made about Redskins which could be construed as slanderous or condescending but not Indians.

Lol, is this serious? No clue they were even changing the name. Are all the Native American names being changed?

Guardians? Makes me think of some poor kid left an orphan and some creepy half-a-pedophile offers to take him off the state's hands for his own purposes...

Easily the worst nickname in baseball, and maybe all of professional sports, though I only know about half the NHL teams...

All they needed was for an active tribe/nation to defend the name....in turn, that tribe would've gotten $$$$. Now, nobody wins.

Cleveland Catfish would be more appropriate. They are usually a bottom feeder (like Cleveland) found in lakes including Lake Erie. Would make a good logo. Guardians is stupid.

I was hoping they would go with the Cleveland Karens, see how stereotyped Caucasians like being the mascot for a professional sports team.

I asked a native American coworker once if he minded being called an Indian. He said, "No, because it reminds me that the White Man was so stupid, or maybe just apathetic, that even after they figured out they weren't in India, they still kept calling them Indians anyway."

You do know a native American (Indian) designed the logo for the Redskins don't you?

Guess so....wonder what new names all the states will be getting. Indian mororcycles will have to bein there somewhere.
THis move has given the Native Americans the thing they have been looking for. They don't want lands or anything like that, they want these nicknames of sports teams to stop....it is too much.
