Cooper Edmiston Named The American’s Defensive Player of the Week; Zach Smith on the Honor Roll

TULSA, Okla. –– University of Tulsa senior linebacker Cooper Edmiston was named the American Athletic Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week, while junior quarterback Zach Smith was named to the league’s honor roll.

Edmiston had a team-high nine tackles, including the pivotal defensive play in the final minute of Tulsa’s 24-21 win against previously unbeaten Wyoming. With the Cowboys threatening for the go-ahead touchdown, Edmiston registered a forced fumble at the 3-yard line with 50 seconds left to give Tulsa the ball and clinch the win.

Edmiston has a team-leading 34 tackles through the first four games this year.

Trailing 21-17 in the 4th quarter, quarterback Zach Smith led Tulsa on a 75-yard, 7-play drive for a 24-21 lead with 3:26 to play against Wyoming. He connected on a 4th-and-5 pass for a 17-yard gain to continue the drive. Smith finished the game with a season-high 354 yards and 2 TDs, covering 56 and 37 yards, as he completed 25-of-50 passes.

Smith is the second Tulsa offensive player to be named to the American Athletic Conference’s weekly Honor Roll, as running back Shamari Brooks was recognized with the honor following the San Jose State game.
