I admit to not knowing what the U.S. or most other teams have. But I have seen on other boards and Twitter that our group is a "group of death". The exact opposite of what this clown says. I'm going with others and say it will be a tough group.

It's all on preference. Ours is a group of death in the sense that any one of the teams in our group can come in 1st and 2nd. But we aren't incredibly inferior talent wise to any of the teams in our group... We avoided Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile.... Which all are teams that have world class footballers by the boat load. We don't have to play a Messi, Neymar or Suarez.... Best player we play is probably James Rodriguez of Real Madrid... But as good as he is he isn't on those other 3's level.

On Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Brazil you have the following players ranked in the world's top 75...

Messi, Higuain, Di Maria, Sergio Aguero, Mascherano, Tevez, Dybala, Alexis Sanchez, Arturo Vidal, Claudio Bravo, Neymar, Lucas, David Luiz, Thiago Silva, Douglas Costa, William, Marcelo, Hulk, Oscar, Coutinho, Suarez, Cavani, Cuadrado, Jackson Martinez.

That's 25 of 75 lol

US couldn't have been in the same group as Brazil or Argentina so the draw went about as bad as it could have for the US.

Yeah this thread is pretty terrible and full of false information. USA got a brutal draw. Costa Rica and Paraguay are definitely the best 3rd and 4th teams in the group.

I guess we got lucky to avoid Chile as the 2???

They got the toughest team in 2 out of the 3 pods and the 2nd best team in the other. Brazil and Argentina basically got byes to the quarters. Oh well, it will still be fun and it will be awesome to see the US play some world class strikers.

The US didnt get best case scenario in Pots 3 and 4, but dont know if I would call it a true Group of Death either. Colombia is the most talented team of the four, but has been so-so since the 2014 World Cup, and have started out very slow in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying. Chile won the 2015 Copa America, and Ecuador has been tearing up WC qualifying, so those may have been tougher Pot 2 draws.

Paraguay was had a decent run that got them into the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, but had fallen off a bit and didnt make the 2014 WC. Decent showing in the 2015 Copa America, and they have 7 points through 4 games in the current qualifying cycle.

Costa Rica had the great run in 2014, and beat the US in a friendly in 2015, but didnt do all that well in the Gold Cup.

Draw could have been easier, but if this national team program is where we think it is and with the tournament being at home, there is no excuse to not make it out of the group.

It was very nearly the toughest possible draw. FIFA Rankings from each pot, our opponent is starred

5 Chile
8 Colombia*
11 Uruguay
13 Ecuador

31 Coast Rica*
51 Jamaica
65 Haiti
60 Panama

42 Paraguya*
43 Peru
72 Bolivia
81 Venezuela

We "avoided" Brazil and Argentina because as host, we were in Pot 1. We had no possibility of matching with them. We "avoided" Uruguay by matching with higher ranked Colombia. The only way our draw could have been tougher would have been to draw Chile instead of Colombia.

Exactly.... Thank you.... A group of death is like we had in the world cup.... Germany, Portugal, Ghana...... This isn't easy but it's not terrible either.

Groups of Deaths labeled when the draw are made often don't even materialize as such. National teams are not together all the time, so it's a bit more unpredictable how they mesh from one segment of games to the next segment.

In our group at the WC 2014 that is mentioned above, Ghana ended up with a bunch of internal strife by their second and third matches, and Portugal imploded in their first group game and lost 4-0 and one of their best players to a red card. The real GoD ended up being the Costa Rica/Uruguay/Italy/England group.

Last year, the US beat Germany and Netherlands (fresh off a win over Spain six days earlier) in back to back friendlies in Europe within a calendar year of Germany winning the WC and Netherlands who came in third. Then, the US crapped out in the Gold Cup within six weeks later, including a loss to Jamaica and a PK loss to Panama. Moral of the story? You just never know what kind of form these national teams are gonna have at a tournament.

The Copa America is the second most prestigious continental tournament for national teams, behind only the Euros. I'd say just about all the top names will play, barring injury.

Brazil and Argentina are LOADED!

Argentina: Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain, Angel Di Maria, Sergio Aguero, Carlos Tevez, Javier Mascherano, Javier Pastore, Ezekiel Lavezzi, Paulo Dybala, Otamendi, Zabaleta, Icardi

Holy **** man - Those guys just come from Barca, FC Porto, PSG, Man City, Juventus, and Inter Milan

Brazil - Neymar, David Luiz, Thiago Silva, Douglas Costa, Dani Alves, Willian, Marcelo, Hulk, Oscar, Coutinho, Ramires, Firminho, Lucas, Danilo, Rafinha , Dante

Teams: Barca, PSG, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Liverpool

Chile: Arturo Vidal, Alexis Sanchez, Claudio Bravo, and some other nice complimentary players on medium tier teams in Europe.

Teams: Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Barca

Columbia - James Rodriguez, Carlos Bacca, Jackson Martinez, Falcao, Cuadrado

Teams: Real Madrid, FC Porto, Chelsea

and then the USMNT with....ugh..... Clint Dempsey??? lol.... I am hoping Argentina and Chile play in Philly... Ill go to that game.

I don't have much faith in our national team right now.... we let Joel Campbell for Costa Rica, a seldom used Arsenal sub totally outclass us. Then Mexico absolutely dominated us and friggin Jamaica had their way at times...

We have 2 games between now and our June 3rd date with Columbia....both against Guatemala... We better look a ton better by then.... if not we could be in for a bad showing

The US is obviously in a major transition period. Will be interesting to see how some of the younger guys come in and stack up. Need to make it out of that group. Argentina/ Chile is in Santa Clara. http://www.ca2016.com/

Dang... Yesterday I saw a thing on FB that had all fixtures and locations except for that game. Its really sad that there are no games on the east coast in-between Orlando and Philly

Yes, barring injury, it sounds like all the big stars will be here. Really looking forward to it. I just hope US gets out of group which won't be easy.

Nothing is easy for our national team... But we should be able to beat Costa Rica and Paraguay... If not, we haven't made near as much progress as we should have

I get the impression that the OP is either young, relatively new to the sport, or both.
