Frank Selvy the only collegiate player to score 100 points in a game passes away at age 91. He played at Furman University and later in the NBA. He is in the College Basketball Hall of Fame as well.

R.I.P.

With UK passing on Frank Selvy got me to thinking about some other great Kentucky natives that didn't play at UK.

Frank Selvy
Dave Cowens
Jim McDaniels
Darrel Griffith
Wes Unseld
Jeff Mullins
William "Bird" Averitt

Rupp told him he was not big enough to play in the SEC. He went to Furman and was 2 time AA and ended up being the number 1 draft pick in the NBA.
Curious where you heard that?

From Harry Lancaster's book it sounded like UK was very interested in recruiting Selvy but he slipped away.

I heard it straight from his brother’s mouth two months ago. He said they had a huge family and not tons of food on the table. Frank was super skinny because he didn’t have much to eat. He said he filled out once he went to Furman and had all the food he ever wanted.

LETSdo a all time team that did with a team that didn't. Would be embarrassing for UK.

Thanks for posting this article Jon. I always enjoy your post and I am very appreciative of the time and effort you devote to giving us "the rest of the story" particularly about Coach Rupp! Keep it coming!

Rupp told him that the year before Frank grew 4 inches. Rupp then recruited Frank but he had promised Furman and Frank stuck to his word.
The story I always heard was very similar.

Selvey had a great career at Corbin but was barely 6’0. Due to his height, Coach Rupp didn’t want to recruit him. He had a growth spurt over the summer and came into that All-Star game at 6’3. Coach Rupp tried to recruit him late in the game (literally after that All-Star game), but Selvey was already firm on Furman and even more so on Coach Alley. He even had a few high school friends go to Furman with him.

Fred Fraley from the Allen/ Pikeville area played point guard at Furman with Selvy.
