Just when it looked like this year’s coaching carousel was coming to an end, it sparked new life on Wednesday when it was reported that Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley was leaving the Eagles for the defensive coordinator job with the Green Bay Packers.

Among the initial candidates listed for the job is Ohio State’s newly hired offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien. On Thursday, The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman teased O’Brien as a potential candidate for the job at Boston College.

O’Brien, formerly the head coach at Penn State is a Boston native and of course, has spent a quality portion of his career in the Boston area as an assistant with the New England Patriots (2007-2011, 2023).

Feldman also notes that the last time Boston College was hiring in 2020, O’Brien flirted with the possibility of taking over the job on Chestnut Hill.

This would be pretty funny. Although, OSU would probably get someone pretty quickly.

Don't think so. That would not be a prime coaching job.

But a Head Coach title is more ego-boosting than co-Offensive Coordinator.

Furrher, he can simply hire people to recruit.
Yeah, he can sit back and lose, There is a limit to which that's acceptable even at BC.

1. There is a special place in hell for people who take shots at a man using his mentally handicapped son as a means do so.

2. BTW, Obriens other son is attending Tufts University outside of Boston and plays ball there.

3. Given his strong family ties and the excellent medical facilities in the Boston area a position there would have many benefits for Bill and his family.

Who took a shot at him?

We have disagreed on other things, but on this I 100% agree with you. Well said.

As we follow Bill around the country on his stops, it makes me feel good that apparently every big town w/ a football job must have an incredible children's hospital. It wasn't always like that.
Hilarious post....it was always about the children

I was sort of being sincere. As for anyone wanting me to burn in a special place in hell for bringing it up, I was being wholly sincere.
Fair enough, I thought you were being T in C. BOB did reference a big part of his move to Houston was to get to a better hospital for his handicapped son which is commendable. He just seems to have moved to a lot of places(Tuscaloosa for one) so maybe his son is doing better or the heath care system for his particular needs has expanded territories.

Dunno. I don’t begrudge anyone for jumping on an opportunity which arises after another job offer, especially in coaching. It’s not like personally desirable head coach jobs are plentiful in any given year. Look no further than Manny Diaz’ cup of coffee with Temple.

Glad to see it. They do not have a championship O-Line, nobody wins a natty with a K-State QB, and the best part, they all hate each other in the "brotherhood". Now they have more stress. Maybe they can convince Eric the Enemy to come be OC, he has just the character to join the brotherhood. How great is a program is it really when it needs to stack all things in their favor just to have a chande to win it all. My God. if they believe in God, they need to thank Him that we, the greatest program in the history of the game this side of Alabama, can not for the life itself recruit a wide reciever who can run, catch and contest. It is the only thing saving Division I college football from a Molly Whopping.

Reports: Bill O’Brien and Boston College are Close to Finalizing a Contract

By Curtis Flannery@CurtisFlannery Feb 5, 2024, 11:49am EST
On Monday morning, reports came out from writers at the Boston Herald and New England Football Journal that Ohio State offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien is close to finalizing a deal to become the next head coach of Boston College football.

Rumblings about this deal started late last week, and it seems that talks have progressed even further as we enter the new week. O’Brien is an experienced NFL and college head coach, so his price tag won’t be cheap, but it seems that BC and athletic director Blake James are willing to work out a deal to bring him on board. Without needing to pay outgoing head coach Jeff Hafley a contract buyout, the financial details for a move like this become a lot easier.

BC fans shouldn’t count their chickens before they hatch, as there is still some time to go before O’Brien officially signs on the dotted line, but it sure seems like the former Patriots offensive coordinator is on his way to Chestnut Hill.

Should give a slice of any future earnings to Mauti & Co. and thank the BOT for giving him sanctions to work with and expectations so low he was able to slide into Coach of the Year. What a sham.

I have never understood the anger of some for Obie.

He was sold a bill of goods by the University and he hung around to give us two winning seasons, even after dozens of starters and contributors bailed out for other schools when given the opportunity.

Given the poor leadership of the Penn State AD and administration the man was still able to make the team competitive.

One man I knew who was on the University of Maryland Board of Trustees told me they and other B1G people were amazed by the job Obie did. They expected Penn State to win a game or two at most during that time.

I wish him the best. When men like the former Head Coach at Alabama and Ryan Day respect him that’s enough for me.

O’Brien was put into a horrible position by some really bad people. I don’t blame him for leaving. That said, I also don’t think he’s much of a coach. Not bad, but not great by any means. His “fighter” attitude was probably perfect for that team he walked into, but it doesn’t make him a great coach.
I don’t really hold anything personally against him but I also don’t praise him.

Opinions? We all have them.

I’ll go with Nick Saban’s opinion on this one though.

Did you ever ask and get his honest opinion as to what he thought of the job the PSU BOT did in 2011/2012?

Don't disagree with the first part at all but "dozens of starters and contributors bailed out for other schools when given the opportunity." I think that might be a bit of an overestimate.
