Not surprising. Dak basically had all the leverage in this spot. About the only other play Dallas had was a tag and trade, but that would mean starting over at QB again. And likely doing so with the perceived third to fifth best QB in the upcoming draft class unless they were willing to sell the farm for Russell Wilson or Watson (if the latter can even be had).

Good for Dak.

Having said that...not the move I would have made if I’m Jones considering he is coming off of a shortened season due to a compound fracture & dislocated ankle. Too many question marks there to go that route. But I hope Dak fully recovers as I don’t wish any injury on any player.

Having said that...I hope the Cowboys go 0-16 next season.

Go Skins!!!

Not bad. 160m eases the knowledge that he's not winning The Big Game in the next four years.

My opinion on why Jerry made the move is because he's almost 80 now. I just want to add something else to it aside from the obvious, which is Jerry doesn't know what he's doing. Probably didn't want to sell the farm for a Watson or Russell Wilson, or draft the #2 to 5 option at QB. Options 2 through 4 could also prove costly in terms of draft picks since I'm not sure any of the top 4 are guaranteed to be there at 10. Jerry probably figured it was just easier to pay Dak his money.

It would do the same for me as well. But he's pretty much had all the leverage here. If Dallas didn't pay him, somebody else would have. Dallas' only option was to do what Washington did with Kirk Cousins, but as I said in my reply above, I'm not sure Jerry wanted to do that.

Unbelievable. He isn't worth half that. Probably could've signed Alex Smith or someone as a bridge while also drafting a qb.

Letting him go risked being mediocre for a few seasons, but with the chance of finding greatness.

Overpaying him guarantees mediocrity and negates any chance of greatness. Plus he's vastly overpaid.

Just an awful decision.

Those QB salaries.. can really hamstring teams.

For my Jets, I've been pro-Sam Darnold all off season. Him plus the #2 pick is just the better play over Zach Wilson or Fields. Until I thought about his contract. Darnold is nearing his 2nd contract, and if he has a decent year, he's going to want to get some form of a pay day. Is Zach Wilson on a 4 year rookie deal, better than Darnold who could be making $30 mil for 4 years very soon... and I think it might be..

Wow. That's a LOT of dough. Dak is a good QB with a lot of weapons surrounding him. Put another 'good' QB in there and I would expect the same or better production. This contract may be an albatross for future Cowboy teams. No way they can pay all the OL, Zeke, Amari, the key defenders PLUS this contract. Over the next few years, the Cowboys roster will get pared away and Dak will be left with a bunch of guys on their first contract. Good for him, not good, long term, for the team, imo.

Guess the Brady model didn't sink in. Take a little less and let the team have enough money to keep weapons around you. Jerry J. must be thinking it's now or never to get another SB win. The Cowboys have a very small window of time with this contract.

I agree. Imo Sam darnold is a mildly better version of carsen wentz. Just not worth the price tag.

He intrigues me, because the Jets were SO bad for 2 years. But I do not want to give him a 4-year/$120m salary. Give him either a 2-year/$60 million or a 3-year $45 million. I know he believes in himself, but while the Jets sucked, so did he, and we had 3 bad seasons. No QB should be getting paid when your team is so crappy.

Which makes me wonder, what is Darnold looking for? Because if we can get him for something cheap over 4 years, or a 1-2 year salary that's a little higher.. I might take it. But He's not worth a big contract over several years. Not yet at least.
