Nothing to see here imo. If you read what he said he included his self when saying it.

The word I get , he apologized offered to resign but the players wanted him to coach. He could of used a better reference I get that .

He shouldn't be fired, but he should be held accountable. Maybe suspended and have to go to counseling. Really poor choice of words there. Can you imagine if an ACC coach said that? Yikes.

He should definitely be held accountable. You don't even have to think much to come up with other metaphors and analogies to use there. Why in the world "plantation" was on the tip of his tongue is perplexing.

I thought the same but almost any analogies now a days could be taken the wrong way . It’s just a mistake and he owned it .

Remember that one time he punched his son on the sideline? That was funny

I have stayed at more than one really nice "plantation" in places like Hilton Head. It never occurred to me that it could be considered insensitive. I do see it now though. I can think of other names that would be considered offensive to certain cultures because it would conjure bad memories. So I have no problem understanding how it's wrong, I just think that McDermott did not intend anything wrong, he just...misspoke.

McDermott indeed "misspoke" as noted above by @Liftee, and it was a "mistake" as @sheyduke also described. However the coach did offer to resign, and was given a stern rebuke by the school. I think he learned his lesson, and I disagree with him not being allowed to coach today. JMO....

So much depends on his personal history and context. If he has a proven history/track record of really supporting his players, looking out for their best interests-as most coaches do, and doesn't have a history of offensive, insensitive behavior, then he "misspoke" is reasonable. That combined with immediate apology, taking full responsibility is enough.

He definitely should have known better, but he's more than owned up to it. I don't know how he is as a coach overall but if it is an isolated incident, then just let him learn his lesson and move on.

This will never end as long as we keep telling kids what to be offended by and taught about history that no1 was even part of..NEVER. My analogy - curse words. Yea, you’re not suppose to say them, and nobody would say them having not learned them. (AT EACH OTHER) specially. I mean, some want to move on and treat everybody that deserves respect with respect, and some want to live in the past while teaching it. All it’s doing Is neutering (is that a offensive word now, hell if I know) these kids to play victim for life, while these racial slurs will be used at one another for another 100 years, cheers

The “tension” between each race will continue! It’s like a debt, that’s owed, to somebody dead, and I keep getting the Bill

Switch to a different card company.
Another one for you to figure out. No matter how much Jay bilas tried to be unbiased over the years (making the majority of Duke fans not being able to stand him) turd fans- “he’s biased” ....that’ll be all of that, about that, in my forest gumps voice.

He should be held accountable. It’s 2021. There is NO excuse for that! Also, wasn’t Creighton apart of the FBI sting for improper recruitment? He’ll probably be fired.

I still say the man's history and intent should be considered here Q. I hate the phrase "brain fart" but if that is what this was from a man who is an advocate for equality, then you learn, teach from this and do better moving forward.
If he truly misspoke, meaning the wrong word/phrase came out, then it is forgivable. Looking at the scenario in which it occurred, him using that word in a negative, hurtful manner, or even intentionally using it at all, makes no apparent sense. Unless, he is a racist and or abusive d..knead. In that case, by all means, hold his hand to the fire.

Well since we have yet to teach our country's history accurately, that might be a place to start.

I've always liked Greg McDermott. Mostly because I won money betting on his team when he was a college player. He played hard every possession. There were several " backdoor covers" where the bet seemed lost, but he would make the final result close. He's a hard-nosed fighter, not an orator or a philosopher. He's from Iowa. He knows farming, not Plantations. My junior high coach used to tell us that we needed to stay on the Reservation. He wasn't speaking of Navajos or Cherokees. I have not seen video of his comments or apology. It forced me to Google Plantation and Reservation. Maybe I learned something. I suspect that he has.

I don't know if you can say Reservation. My coach didn't say it with malice. There are Plantations all over the world. I can't imagine how many verbal gaffes I would commit if I had to speak in public

Lol. My friends used to call my house the (enter my last name) plantation. I guess because we own a lot of acres and a farm and it has a good twang to it saying it like that.. Nobody or I ever thought anything about it....my friends were mostly black. I give up lol
