I'm not a great X's and O's guy, but I have noticed the swagger and overall results improvement. Where's our resident board coaches? Is the secondary looking better coached this year?
No expert here but it's obvious to me that they are playing much better. Do guys get open sometimes? Sure. But the lack of huge plays seems to have decreased and they tackle much better.
I need to watch the tape on who didn't pick up the NW guy that caught the TD pass, basically uncovered.
Believe it was a previously outspoken reserve; let him breeze on by into no coverage deep - ugh... attitude or what. .... The last interceptions were a result of great skill and taking over the route as coached. Too cool; Coach Sanders taught this also. Coach Banker taking a hand in the db's is paying big dividends. I have read and listened to the db's talk of the plays - they totally get it and went for it.

They're also paying more attention to the ball this season it seems rather than the man they're covering which is a bonus IMO.

This. My problem with our defense this year is that we have cut way down on big pass plays by giving up the short to intermediate routes. This is why teams have been able to sustain drives on us. But we do hold the score down by making them earn it, and because once you are in the red zone the field compresses. Still, the bend but don't break approach keeps our offense off the field and gives us bad field position. Yes, we are improved over last year, but I still see some reasons for concern here.
Correct, we can't get pressure w/o blitzing. Surprised 91 hasn't been able to win more one on one battles. In fact does he seem a half step slower than last year before he got hurt? Perhaps the increase in size has reduced his speed a hair.
According to KM, Parrella challenged them to increase the sack #'s and he responded with two. Hopefully this is a trend
You rarely get pressure on a QB if all he is doing is pitch and catch to wide open receivers who are 8 yards downfield. And that has now been a trend of our defense in all 4 games.
We are very much improved over last year. That makes me happy and gives me hope. But this is not a great defense. It is a good defense that has some limitations. And one of those limitations is that we are not challenging receivers and getting them to alter their routes. As rrt pointed out, we are giving them an 8-10 yard cushion which allows them to run short routes with great precision.
This is clearly a textbook case of a "bend but don't break" defense. And I am thrilled with 4-0, and the guts and grit of this defense. But don't tell me that our inability to cover short passing routes is because we lack a pass rush.
One thing I love to see are coverage sacks and QB's tossing it out of bounds. Those two things mean your secondary has them on lock down.
