Dealing with unc cheater fans.

We've had a thread similar to this a couple of years ago. Had a doctors appt. today and had on a Duke t-shirt. I was really minding my own business and had not even been thinking what I was wearing. A couple of women sat down near me and one said to me " I see you are a Duke fan." Before I could say yes the other one said " sorry to hear that. We're carolina fans. " All I could come up with is that " I'm sorry to hear that you are a carolina fan too. " After the fact I could have came up with a much better response but as soon as I said that they got up and moved. I don't know what experiences the rest of you have had but it seems like everytime something like this happens they have to try to get my dander up.I know I use the word entitle or some form of it a lot when in general discussing unc fans, coaches or players but thats the way I feel. It's like as if one parked in a handicapped zone without the plague and you said something to them about it they would point to the rams club or unc sticker on their vehicle and then just go on about their business as if it's ok as long as they are cheater fans. I so grateful forvthe fact I'm a Duke fan and am banned forever from thr. OFC

I totally get where you're coming from--believe me--but I usually end up having pretty good conversations with folks who make similar remarks. I'm not sure why... probably because I usually quickly steer the conversation toward something less confrontational, like asking them if they get to go to many games, or who their favorite player was, etc.

All this of course is significantly impacted by my mood at the time. ;-)

Most tar hole fans are good as long as Duke has the upper hand. There’s some out there that are ok to deal with, but as a whole, they are the most entitled and arrogant fan base out there.

Last season was the perfect example. They all felt they had no chance to beat Duke, but as soon as they won, you couldn’t go anywhere without seeing those ugly blue sweatshirts. The stench of moth balls was almost unbearable.

Unless you live in N.C. and deal with the on a daily basis such as work, at the stores, at church, at the doctors office, at local ball games, wherever you go you just can't imagine how irratating it can be. Friends and people I know I can deal with but strangers who go out of their way to make a remark gets to be old. Maybe they are insecure I don't know. There's safety in numbers and believe me they have numbers. As far as the other 3 big 4 schools W.F., NCSU and Duke there are probably more cheater fans than the other three combined. Thank goodness for App. St. and ECU football. Their alumni are loyal to their football teams but when basketball season comes around they are cheater fans. OFC

The thing is, there have to be about as many N.C. State alums in North Carolina as UNC alums. But the number of Heel fans in the state dwarf the number of State fans, which obviously tells you that a significant number of their fans are nothing but bandwagon fans who like them simply because they've been good for a long time.

Guy i used to work with, who i like a lot, went to UNC-W but Carolina basketball was as important to him as oxygen. Always said "we" when referring to the team and would sometimes call in sick the day after a loss.

If we’re all honest, unless you graduated from Duke, or have pulled for them pre K, then the rest of us hopped on the bandwagon.

That’s just the way sports are. I know Duke fans that were die hard Seminole football fans in the 90’s.

There's unc fans where I live that could actually be some of the challenged thr posters. And don't think for a minute that a majority of them are heel alumni. A very high minority though. But a majority are actually band wagon fans. Oh yes there are. Couldn't tell you any history of athletics or who played on their last NCAA championship team but big heel fans they are. OFC

I live right in the thick of it, might be because I’m a social recluse, I don’t generally experience anything too bad. Most UNX fans are cool. Perfect example, earlier this year I’m at a McDonald’s drive thru. This was not too long after our second loss to them. He noticed my duke headrest covers and said “oh, you’re a duke fan?”
And I was just like oh boy, here we go. I just responded with “yeah bro”
and he said “cool, I ain’t gonna say anything”. And I said “you have the right to, you guys beat us twice”
and he said “but you guys didn’t need have Zion, it doesn’t really count”

He was a cool dude. A lot of them aren’t as weird and obnoxious as those guys over at THR

You’re probably right, like I said, I’m a social recluse. Outside of work and the gym, I don’t go out very often. I’m most likely missing the worst of what this fan base ha to offer.

I have become so irritated with the their cheating ways and obnoxious fans base, and I am older so I really dont care how they react, i cant contain it.

Many times in shopping centers and/or going for walks, I just yell out "ROY KNEW!!!" Its very fun, especially just after I walk past someone with their artificial blue apparel. I have lived in NC over 60 yrs, and on my tombstone under 82-50 will read "Roy Knew." OFC

Its rough wearing Duke gear in Kentucky. I always get puke or you cant spell duke without UK. I always respond yeah you have to add a D and E to make something out of nothing. But after the spanking last year they have been pretty quiet.

Unfortunately it’s basically the only restaurant at White Lake. All of the other restaurants are in Elizabethtown which usually take forever because most people that go to White Lake go to the restaurants in Elizabethtown to eat.

Another technique for dealing with UNCheater fans is to carry a textbook with you. It doesn’t have to be a big textbook. Any textbook will work.

When the UNCheater fan tries talking to you, pull out the textbook and ask them if they’d like to follow you to class to discuss it further. 100% of the time you’ll see a UNCheater fan run screaming like they saw a ghost as soon as you say the word “class.”

you nailed this one. By the way, what happened at Duke concerning students not letting someone speak because he was conservative or something. I keep getting snide remarks from a couple of hole fans about that. And, I have heard nothing about it . Is it something they are making up?

I live in the Bull City, and Its surprising how many UNx fans are in the area, but like most here, i've has some pretty cool encounters with them. mostly just poking fun at each other, nothing like the THR posters. Its a great rivalry . Ive seen people (strangers) wearing a UNx shirt and i have on a DUKE hat or tee shirt and they may say hey wrong team, I'll say hey you got some SH*T on your shirt you may want to wash or change it.. its all in good fun though. Greatest rivalry in all of sports IMO. GO DUKE!!
