Sundance is airing Deutschland ‘86, a sequel to the hit Deutschland ‘83.

It covers the mid-eighties, focusing on East German “Stasi” activities. I’ve missed an episode, but one airs, tonight on Sundance at 12:00 tonight.

If you came of age in the eighties with a government or military focus, these are great dramatized historical programs.

Probably will check it out. Spent 3 years in Germany late 70's, 3 years mid 80's and 2 years mid 90's. Enjoyed my time there.

Thank you for your service.

I graduated HS in ‘81. I went to college to study government, and many of my friends went to defend the Fulda Gap.

This series is of exactly that age, and is worth ordering. You get to see a German portrayal of the evil of East Germany, in a high quality mini-series.

They got their ish down, right down to the Seiko Watch my brother gave me in 1986, when I was in law school.

From everything I've read and heard, this series sounds wunderbar. I served 11 years in Germany during the 80s and 90s. Might check it out.

My ex-wife is German. Her aunt and uncle lived in Leipzig, East Germany back then, perhaps 1985 or so. East Germans were allowed visits to relatives in West Germany. As we lived next door to my in-laws, I remember they came over once. Because of so much propaganda over there, they firmly believed Americans were a bunch of gangsters. I happily proved otherwise.

Travel was also an adventure during that era. While air travel between Berlin and the west seemed relatively simple, ground and rail transit proved cumbersome. Duty train between Bremerhaven and Berlin started out normal. Once you hit the east-west border, conductors ordered shades down. Even the ride on train tracks felt rougher once you crossed over.

My unit rotated for border patrol near Bad Hersfeld. East Germans sank tons of money and resources specifically aimed at keeping their citizens captive. They lined the border with guard towers, wire, fencing, obstacles and surveillance devices. Inside the 1-km zone appeared not only crazy, but spooky. Unforgettable.
