Did a recruit lie to Stoops?

Wonder who coach was referring too? First marrow talks about a number 1 team then Stoops steps in and talks a little bit and mentions a recruit saying ya they are coming but yet they were lying to him.

I find it interesting they want these kids on campus on many visits to make it feel like home to em.

Q. Was last year somewhat of an anomaly with UK, the decommits, as many as there were last year?

VINCE MARROW: I think there's something to that. I didn't see too many decommits last year. Our belief is we got kids on campus more than two times, three times, pretty much they committed. Part of the guys that decommitted, they was only here once or twice. The number one team in the country came after them. That was hard to old onto. But, yeah, I see a little bit of that.

COACH STOOPS: Again, piggybacking on that, you see the decommits. I was watching briefly ESPN getting ready for this, you see all the flipping going on with major players. It's part of the game. Nobody likes to see it. Fans don't like to see it. But there's nobody that panics. It doesn't help you. Sometimes it's a kick in the gut, a kick in the other thing. It's a kick in the gut sometimes.

Recruiting is very personal. Coaches spend and awful lot of time recruiting these guys. That's what gets hard when guys pledge against you. That's why at the end of the day anybody that is going to sit in my office and look me in the eye and lie to me, I don't want them in this program. It all works out for the best most of the time.

^ That was my exact thought. I asked the same question in another thread. Sounds like that's exactly who he was talking about. I remember some of the guys in the know telling us not to worry that he'd be with us on signing day then he signs with Bama. I wonder if he didn't tell the coaches he was committing then caught them off guard with his Bama commit?

Except the question was about decommittments, DH never committed in the first place.
You can commit to a coach but keep it private . Although in DH's case , I don't know why he would . Usually it's kids going away from home that want to keep it quiet .

This should put to rest the reason why so many of our fans have a problem with the way DH handled his recruitment. How any die hard UK Football fan couldn't be upset with the way he harmed our 15 class is beyond me.

Wish the kid no ill will, but I couldn't care less about his career from the moment he signed with another team.

Alabama signed 2 running backs today. Hope they both pass DH on the depth chart. He played less and less this past season as the year went on. He lost his job as KO returner due to several mistakes.

I have no problem with how Alex Stump handled his recruitment. Had OSU not offered, there's no doubt in my mind he would've stuck with UK. As for the Dowell twins, their recruitment at UK was kinda strange. Even though they had verbally committed, it never felt like they were THAT committed if you know what I mean.

I'm sorry but I don't blame DH for going to Alabama. He committed to Michigan and no one was mad at him.
It's not the going to Bama that makes people mad. It's that he seemingly exploited UK for tickets, apparel, etc. He said he knew at the iron bowl that he wanted to be at Bama but waited 6 weeks later to commit. That's why people were upset.

ukfan, I don't think any fan of U K would have cared if he went to Alabama, if he had been upfront with it. We didn't even care if he attended some of our games. What pi$$ed all the fans off was he led Stoops to believe he was definitely coming to UK, but had told his friends he was going to Alabama, that he was just using Stoops for the perks.
If you recall, Stoops believed him enough that he didn't recruit a running back, until he found out the truth.
Be upfront with us. Don't be a damn liar, and we can accept that and wish you the best.

I also think that the #1 team reference was likely in regards to OSU. They flipped Hamilton & Stump from UK. Not sure if they flipped anybody else.

MSU flipped the Dowell twins.

VTech flipped Fullwood.

UNC flipped Strowbridge.

Auburn flipped one of our CB's (Dinson) & we flipped one of theirs (Westry).

I can't think of anybody else, but it seemed like more flipped than that.

I thought it was funny he said he was pissed about the Dowell twins. It's cool for him to admit that and I think that says a lot about him being a cool guy. I remember it being a really random thing. Really wish they would have stayed on.

I think OSU did end up offering CJ but he was enrolling early here. Would have been tough to hold onto had he not enrolled early you gotta think. CJ is gonna be an stud here, so glad he enrolled early.

Yeah, I actually remember him going to that OSU camp. I was very concerned that he was going to flip. However, Urban allegedly invited CJ in order to pressure a commitment out of another recruit. The other guy ended up committing at that camp & CJ didn't get an offer. I hate that he got treated like that, but glad that he ended up in BLUE!!

Urban asked CJ to give up his jersey to use as a cone or marker during a drill. Meyer has been vocal about his distain for UK coming into Ohio and taking so many players that were once the lifeblood of the Big10. He's called out the other schools in the Big10 for letting the SEC come into Big10 country and steal recruits

DH played CMS and UK. Geeze the kid even called the friends he had made on the UK team to come to his presser when he announced. I think he had become great friends with Elam. He actually called Elam to invite him to his presser and then a slap in the face made him sit there and listen to him announce for another school. The kid spent many weekends at UK enjoying all the perks of a UK weekend. I got nothing for this kid.

Harris, Elam, and Timmons were just markers for Meyer and Saban to put "Stoops in his place" by showing they could come in and take the top in state talent. Once they signed, they wouldn't have really cared whether they panned out or not.
Harris took the bait. It may work out or he may end up an afterthought.

Terrible take

This has been explained at least 100 times re: where he committed vs how he lied and attention whored the process and took UK's staff off of ither options

Don't even come back with that again. People have explained this many, many times

Honestly if DH would have said in the fall look guys, I love you all and UK but its Alabama. I wouldn't have blinked an eye and nor would any UK fan. To string UK along for months and lying about it is a travesty. I promise you CMS would have explored many other options. Instead he committed himself to DH. So I got nothing for the kid.

He said yesterday that HAD they offered he would have been thrilled, but then qualified and said he thinks he still would have come to UK, partly due to his relationship with Marrow. It was clear that OSU did not offer.

Whether it be Damien Harris or anyone else, if a kid knows that he's not coming, then he should at least let a coach know so that he can find a replacement.

With a top tier player, a coach will hold on till the end to try and get his commitment.

If Harris knew it was Alabama and he didn't let CMS know, after attending all the games and stuff, then that was wrong.

At least Malik Monk gave Mike Anderson plenty of time to find other players.

Apparel that is worn on visits must be returned at the conclusion if not it's an NCAA violation. I'm not sure what kind of "benefit" free admission to a UK game would be if he had no interest in every coming here. I'm not a Harris apologist, and could care less what direction his career takes but I don't' share the opinion that he was gaming us that others do, as there isn't really any evidence of it and I see no motive in him doing so.

Maybe he gave Stoops a silent verbal - who knows? no one here will probably ever know, and I personally could care less at this point.

Agreed. If I'm 17 or 18 again, and a highly recruited prospect, and I can go to a SEC game just up the road from where I live...I'd go every Saturday.

He didn't harm our class except with him not coming here. We have Boom at RB so not like we are missing out on some great player in Harris. If he does not do anything at Bama (jury is way still out on this as RBs develop there), he would 100% have done jack crap here as well behind our oline and in our offense. So as of now, not a huge loss IMO.

I totally understand where you're coming from. As painful as it is to still say, the kid is always going to be from Kentucky, so I'll never be one to wish I'll will on him. In saying that, I don't care and haven't cared about what he does since he decided against coming to UK.
