I understand drinking them for the pretend health benefits or to keep you from drinking real sugary drinks, but are they actually pleasing to the palate in any way? I say 'nay'

Diet A&W Root Beer, Diet Dr. Pepper (and cherry version) are good.

Haven't had too many others that taste good.

I used to drink a lot of diet drinks (Diet Pepsi/Coke, Root beer and Mountain Dew). Then I read how diet drinks are nearly as bad for you as full sugar drinks. They can actually make you fat and can lead to diabetes according to several studies. I usually go with water or unsweetened tea now.

"3. It can increase your risk of metabolic syndrome and diabetes.
Several studies have linked diet drinks to increased risk of metabolic syndrome and diabetes.Metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors that raises your risk for heart disease and other health problems like diabetes and stroke, in addition to increased belly fat and high cholesterol.

A 2008 study of about 10,000 adults at the University of Minnesota found that 1 soda drink a day led to a 34% increased risk of metabolic syndrome. Additionally, another study found a 36% greater risk of metabolic syndrome related to drinking diet soda and a 67% greater risk of type 2 diabetes compared with people who did not drink any diet soda.

4. It leads to ‘increased waist circumference.’
Two studies done by the School of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, (one in 2011 and another in 2015), found that two servings of diet soda, specifically Diet Coke, increased waistlines by over three inches.

Compared with non-users, diet soft drink consumers had a 70% increase in ‘waist circumference’ than did non-users. But, frequent consumers — defined as consuming two or more diet drinks a day — had a 500% waistline increase over non-users, according to researchers...."

In general, the carbonated diet beverages suck, and suck very badly. However, the powdered/liquid-add-to-bottled-water diet thingies are pretty tolerable. The GOAT is diet Lipton Summer Peach Iced Tea.

Nope. Would much rather drink water than a diet carbonated drink. Diet Dr. Pepper is the only one that even remotely has a chance of slightly tasting decent. But it still sucks.

If I am eating a burger or popcorn or the like then i am going all out regular Coke. And if a joint has one of those newer drink machines then its Cherry Coke.

It's all crap. More and more they are finding that sugar is much worse than we thought. It's not needed, at all, ever. And for Diet drinks, the stevia/aspartame has it's own set of issues.

Soda basically makes up a 3rd of this list:

I honestly feel bad for those who got addicted to soda and sugary drinks. It's hard to break.

Diet drinks = [laughing]

I use regular and diet soda as an ant killer and rust remover. Works well against slugs, too.

I find soda period to be absolutely awful. Never liked it, not even as a kid. Was always into the minute maid fruit punches and tropical punches and Capri-Sun's and whatnot when I was a kid though, as those were great. But ever since adult hood I drink either water or whiskey, like a man.

If you can manage it.. flavored seltzer water or unsweetened tea drinks.. Gets you as much flavor as possible without any sugar, sugar substitute, processed crap.

+1

Healthy exceptions when used in sane, moderate amounts: honey, maple syrup (grade A).

How do you use it for slugs? Put it in a dish and they climb in it?
Correct. But it dilutes really bad after a rain. Switch out every couple days.

My grandma told me years ago soda was also good at attracting flies. Pour some into a bowl away from your group.

One gets used to them. However, per my doctor and research I've done on the net, they are not recommended for regular consumption. Says the "bad" gut bacteria's preferred food is sugar. Next, is artificial sweetener. I think there are some soda pops with Tevia as the sweetener. Those would be preferred but are expensive. That is really the point in pro-biotics, to send an "army" of "good" bugs to overwhelm those "bad" ones. Just make sure the label says "live strains".

I started using Agave nectar for drinks and mixology, heard it was "natural" and what not.. turns out it's worse for you than regular sugar.

This stuff goes back and forth. Don't eat Butter! Eggs are bad for you!

But if it's artificial, it's not gonna be good for you.

While Stevia is plant, it's still processed. I haven't read the most recent articles, but from what I have read, I would bet within the next decade you'll find that Truvia is no better for you than Sweet n Low. Artificial Sweeteners have their own health issues.

Note: I still put a splenda/truvia in my coffee every day.. again, not trying to be "that guy". Hard to break these habits.

Only diet drinks I've been able to enjoy are Diet Dr. Pepper and Diet Mt. Dew.

Diet coke tastes like filtered *** water.

I like diet drinks just fine but some people don't like them at all. I sometimes make a little soda money on the side and accidental got a bunch of diets. It took a month to get rid of them.
