I have directv now and was looking at the two year price lock package with Dish. I like direct but dish seems to be a little cheaper. What is your opinion? Direct or Dish?

Take one with a new member discount package then when it runs out switch to the other new member package.
Cause basically they give all the good deals to new subscribers or you usually get some "come back to us" special after you switch it off if you can wait a month.
Or just get Netflix, Hulu and Amazon TV and cut the cord.

Try AT&T Uverse if its available. More reliable the either DTV or DISH.

*The following is a cut/paste from the previous thread on the subject*

-Sign up with Dish with a really good deal.
-They'll jack up the price on you over the course of the contract
-You'll call to complain, but they'll stonewall you and state there is nothing you can do.

-You'll wait till the contract is up, then jump to Direct's "deal-o-the-month"
-They'll jack up the price on you over the course of the contract
-You'll call to complain, but they'll stonewall you and state there is nothing you can do.

-Oh, well, back to Dish........

Blueraider22 I basically think that's the plan. I think I'm gonna give dish a chance. Maybe.

They should just pin this topic to the top since it pops back up every couple months.

I can't add much to the discussion since I haven't had satellite for probably 6 or 7 years but when I did I had Dish and it worked well with very few outages. When it did go out it was usually only like 15 minutes or less. I always kept an antenna on the tv just in case it goes out so I have something to watch. If they had something as fast as cable internet I would go back to satellite. Dish has always had better pricing, but they are lacking in the sports compared to Directv if you want the NFL package.

Last time my parents made the decision between Dish/Direct, the jacked up price you get after the sweet new user deal expires was much higher with Direct TV. That was well over 5 years ago though.

Never used Dish, but my experience with DirecTV is that they'll gladly lower your rate to keep you as a customer. If the normal customer-service representative is unwilling to drop your bill, then ask to be connected to a manger to assist you in your cancellation. They will capitulate quicker than a snap of the finger.

No they won't. well at least not much. At the most they'll lower it $2-3 on the bill that's already jacked up to well over $100. We've even asked to be transferred to the department to cancel service and they respond, "Sure will. Sorry we couldn't have been more helpful." So, my wife and I have jumped back and forth a few times now. So have my parents. And occasionally it is talked about at work with coworkers and patients and they all say the same thing.

Directv's retention department called a day after cancellation with them and before dish came out. Now directv offered a better deal than dish. Guess I'm sticking with Directv for now.

Question about jumping between Dish and Direct.

I have use Dish for over 12 years and have made that threat to them before.

If you do switch, does Dish or Direct come and retrieve the outside satellite equipment? Or do you just start a collection of satellite dishes in your garage?

Im paying $155 a month with Direct, and might watch 20-30 channels. I have the package before the ultimate, and it's gone up $60 bucks in 15 months.

For the last four years I have had Dish and DirecTV. Sounds stupid but I want to see what I want to see.

I just put up a good antenna to get all the locals in HD, and I just cancelled Dish. I had to send them back their equipment except the actual dish.

I think that the DirecTV Genie is better than Dish's Hopper. I was paying DirecTV $197 per month (my sports packages and all the Movie channels). Before unhooking Dish I called Dish, TWC and DirecTV. Bottom line is that DirecTV dropped my bill from $197 to $150. Dish could not match nor TWC. I could have saved a little money on Dish but the Hopper will not allow you to record 5 stations (OF YOUR CHOICE) but DirecTV will.

All three choices that I have will give you a discount for a few months and then try to stick it to you; however, I have vowed to do my due diligence ever two year to minimize my cost.

Been with dish for the last 3 years. One of the best things for our family is that everybody has a folder for their recordings. I used to hate going through the shows to find what I had.
I don't know about direct's new genie system but the one before it started to get very sluggish. So far the hopper system is still going good. The secondary receiver is sluggish though.
If you like Netflix they have a channel built into the receiver guide so no switching.

What about Dish only recording 5 shows at once during prime time? What do they consider prime time?

We just called DirecTV to cancel last month. Our bill was $140 per month before taxes and fees. The "retention specialist" offered to take $40 off of our bill for the next 12 months (with a 12-month commitment) AND threw in free NFL Sunday Ticket. They WILL work with you if you show them you are ready to cancel...

^^^ Same with dish. I was paying 160 a month. Told them to cancel my bill, I am now paying 90 a month for the next 12 months.
