There is a story going around of a woman winning 175,000 playing what is called white elephant in the story. I've never met anyone from Kentucky that used the term white elephant. I assume if it is used in Kentucky, it's in far Northern Kentucky. I had a kid from coastal North Carolina work for me, and they called it white elephant. It is Dirty Santa. Say it right and stop ruining my life.

And there is a $20 or 25 gift limit. That doesn't mean you go buy a $7 gift. We've been playing as an office for years and we have a couple of people that always buy $10 or less gifts. One retired leaving only one land mine to avoid. In all the years of playing Dirty Santa, neither's gifts have ever been stolen.

The other story I saw called it white elephant. That story came from out of state. The herald leader to their credit got this right. Maybe there's hope after all.

I am from Northern Kentucky and have never heard of Dirty Santa. I hadn't heard of White Elephant either until about 10 years ago.

The catch is that my learning of White Elephant came from in-law extended family Christmas. They are all from Central to Eastern KY.

I say all this to say- keep NKY out of your Dirty Santa loving mouth .

Oh and btw, I agree that Dirty Santa is a much more fitting name based off the game.

I'm not sure what elephants have to do with Christmas. Anyone that calls this game white elephant should be boiled in his own pudding and buried with a steak of holly through his heart.

I worked in Illinois for a long time as well, It is called Dirty Santa where I worked.

This website indicates because Kentucky has a lot of people searching for white elephant that it is commonly called that here. I maintain they're searching for it because they don't understand the name.

I haven't worked in office in almost 3 years but hated the stupid gift exchange. I had to spend 20 on some bum I couldn't care less about and then spend another 50 to 60 (about 20 each) on my 3 direct reports.

Apparently it started in Ohio in the late 1800s. Dirty Santa did not start until the 1980s. I started working in the late 1980s, that's why I do not know the older term and do know the newer term.

Actually, I have a compromise solution. "White Elephant" denotes the type of gift, while Dirty Santa means the game of giving a White Elephant gift during Christmas season. White Elephant gifts can be given for different occasions. Basically, they're anything useless, obnoxious, or hilarious (or a combination thereof). Think the leg lamp from A Christmas Story.

In sum, what I'm really trying to say is that I'm basically a modern day Henry Clay for coming up with this compromise. YWIA.

I grew up in south-central KY, went to Grad school in Lexington, and my ex-in-laws were in north-eastern KY, so covered most of the state, and have always known it as White Elephant.
