Do fans have a right to know what Jones did?

As a life long fan and season ticket holder I have given thousand upon thousand of dollars to the university in support of student scholarships, as I'm sure most fans do. doesn't this give me and others the right to know when something like this happens. At least more that a one line sentence from the University. I think they are doing more harm than good for Jones because the rumors are are probably far worse than anything he actually did.

No, fans do not have a right to know what he did to cause his dismissal. To know that he was dismissed from the team is all the fans are entitled to. If he wishes to tell what happened then that is his choice, no one else has the right to delve into his private life.

Yes I agree the rumors may be worse than anything he did, but it is up to Jones if he wishes to clear the air, not the university.

With the ticket prices at the YUM, it's a lot like going to church. You don't necessarily have a say, you just get to pay.

I don't think so, I know it sucks but the university usually dictates how much they want to say about a matter, and usually it's just a vague statement and it's up to the media to find the scoop or university to leak to media so they aren't the direct source.

I don't know if there is a clause in the student-athlete handbook that covers confidentiality in matters like this; but honestly what would knowing about the incident do for you? If it was bad enough would it give you satisfaction that he's off the team? If not that bad in your opinion would it make you mad they kicked him off? I think you just need to trust both the university and coach that whatever happened, they are very comfortable not having him around to enable similar behavior. They aren't going to kick off their starting senior point guard mid-way through season for being late to team meeting.

No, he is an amateur athlete. He should be allowed that privacy. The fact that people start rumors shouldn't change the communication of an internal issue.

You already know my stance on this issue since you opened this thread after I made my comments to ACCCard, but it's worth repeating.

NO, it's none of our business what Jones did to be dismissed from the team. Period. We are not entitled to invade his privacy anymore than we are entitled to invade yours. The amount of money you spend on the program is your choice. Nobody is forcing you to spend the money, and just because you do doesn't mean that gives you the right to infiltrate the players personal lives. It's none of our business.

NO, unless he has a problem thar could make him a threat to the safety of others he may come in contact with. I think then the right of privacy would get thrown out the window.

Of course, that's different. That would make it a criminal case which makes it public record. I thought it had already been established that he wasn't arrested for any type of crime? If he committed a crime then his right to privacy is void. I agree.

I would say that since we "pay his salary", we should be able to know.

But.....................

when our daughter entered college, we were told at orientation that her grades would NOT be divulged or discussed with us, the paying parents.

So under those guides, I'd say we don't have the right to know.

CJ is a Sr. so he's over 21 YOA. He is a "public" figure. He's no "kid".

If he did something that ends up in court, we will know everything..

I think I read all of these post. I did not see the following point.

When a student is dismissed from a sports team by the university, are there not legal provisions that do not allow the university to disclose the reason for the dismissal?

I would think it would have to do with these players, regardless of age, are still officially "STUDENT-athletes." Why ruin the future life of a young man?

That was my point Base...I'm sure there is a non-disclosure clause in the student handbook...any issues are between the student and university

IMO, I do NOT think we, as fans, have the right to know. I have often felt Coach Pitino says too much publicly as it is in regards to disciplinary issues. I know it has always been his MO to send messages to the team via the media, but it's never been a part of his methods that I approve of. Kids in general and players in particular are more sensitive these days to how they are being portrayed publicly. The feedback they receive via social media (Twitter, FB, message boards, etc.) is much more immediate and hyper critical than in the past. In other words, if a coach says a player has a bad attitude to the media, that player hears about from EVERYBODY and their brother on social media. A person's reputation, good or bad, can be destroyed or inflated within a 24 hour internet cycle.

Exactly right.

Fans have no 'RIGHT' to know anything about the private goings-ons. Let me also state that there's really no right to privacy either though. Tell me where to find that right. But people respect others privacy which is a good thing.

Jones is likely facing a legal matter. The university's counsel likely advised Pitino to not comment. It wouldn't look very good of Pitino or UofL to say, "Chris Jones was released from the team today because he hit his girlfriend." You let Chris deal with that.
