Do Football Coaches Get More Leeway Than Basketball Coaches?

I just saw Dan Mullen go completely nuts way out on the field while yelling at the refs. The refs seem to rarely call a penalty on the coaches in football. I know Coach Cal gets T'd up for much less in basketball. Heck they will call a technical from the other end of the court while the football refs stand right next to the coach and let things slide. So why the double standard for the football coaches?

If football coaches got T'd up like Cal, Stoops would be in deep trouble. Dude stays red in the face yelling at refs.

I was going to mention Stoops, but didn't he actually get a penalty when he was yelling at the refs over the missed horsecollar tackle?

Yes. But I think it's the nature of the venue. Basketball, everyone can hear every word the coach is screaming at a ref. Fans feel right on top of the refs and might storm the court. Football, the ref might barely hear the coach, let alone anyone else hear what's being said. Most everyone isn't paying attention. Easier to ignore. Kinda like how noise in tennis is much worse than in baseball.
