Do you give your dog people food?

I love my dog and hope that he lives forever. Having said that, I am probably taking time off his life with the people food I give him. I guess I decided quality over quantity for him. I think if I were him I would want that.

Our little dog is 10 years old. Had a lot of teeth pulled and soft "healthy" dog food was wrecking her belly. We now put some chicken thighs and carrots in the crockpot with zero seasonings and some water. We add unsalted green beans and peas to it when it's done and blend it all up. She eats that twice a day along with some healthy snacks like eggs or watermelon. She's been doing great and has a lot more energy. So yeah, we giver her people food.

Yes, but no bread. Most retriever type dogs have grain allergies that cause ear infections and a bad odor.

I don't have any dog people. If I did, I would probably feed them to sate their blood lust.

As a general rule, no. I’ve had dogs with terrible bouts of pancreatitis and after a couple huge vet bills for fluids, etc, I’ve sort of cut that out.

Real answer, yes, but almost always just slightly browned meat and fat from when I'm cooking.

Not as much as I used to. But, one of my dogs is a beagle and if I don’t give him some people food, the lil bastard will find it with that damn nose.

As a general rule, I keep most food behind some kind of closed door and all trash cans have to be stored higher than normal.

Usually not, because my dog has a weak stomach and it doesn’t take much for him to wake me up at 2 am with the runs.

I will bake him some chicken with rice occasionally though.

Of course dog food companies don't want us feeding anything but their products and they do a good job of framing the discussion. One should learn to read pet food labels. There are laws regarding the labels and there are tricks companies use to mislead you while still following the law. Generally speaking, food that is bad for us is bad for pets and food that is good for us is good for pets, but some human food can be dangerous or even deadly for pets. BTW be wary of cooked bones for dogs. The cooked bones can splinter pretty easily.

Mainly meat but I understand there are things you don't give them. No candy or chocolate. No fruits or vegetables with a skin. My dog is weird. I have put a plate down for him with steak and broccoli on it and he ate the broccoli and left the steak.
Ever see a dog that eats cat poop? Cat foods generally have more meat in them than dog foot, so there's more "meat" in cat poop.

My princess is a beagle/lab mix. She’s eaten some absurd things like...

- 32oz of cream cheese
- huge *** 1 pound bag of twizzlers
- multiple entire loaves of bread
- plate of chocolate fudge

After I realized she wasn’t going to die after eating some of that stuff, I was genuinely impressed.

I give her a bite or two of leftover chicken or peanut butter occasionally, and let her lick my blue bell bowl after I’m finished.

I had a dog growing up that would eat raw potatoes. We didn't give them to him, but if we accidentally left the pantry door open he would grab one and take off with it.

Pretty funny listening to a dog crunching down on a potato. He'd finish it off every time too.

One of my two dogs refuses to eat her dry food unless we put a little people food on it. We usually give her left over vegetables, cooked hamburger, shredded cheese or a little lunch meat.

She wouldn't get people food if not for my Fiance...

Pretty sure this dog eats better than I do.

My dog is on the weight management food. She's doing well but I still give her every empty peanut butter jar just to watch her try to get her whole head in it.

Off topic a bit, but your post reminded me of it. In the dog world, the leader eats first and the pack eats last. One way to emphasize who is the leader is to put something you like on top of the dog bowl before you put it down. The missus and I would put a couple of Famous Amos cookies on top and make a scene out of how good our "share" was before putting it down for the dogs to eat. We had a 75 pound pure muscle boxer who was not scared of anything, but we could both put our hands in her mouth and take food out of it. If you have kids, make sure they get their "share" to before the dogs.

When I was in middle school we had an elderly Maltese that was just about at the end. We gave him a piece of brisket while we were eating dinner. That night that dog pooped in every room of the house. Every hall. The stairs. EVERYWHERE. And it was all diarrhea. That dog only weight about 8 pounds and he pooped out at least double that

Oh man, poor dog and whoever had to clean that mess up. I’m lucky that my dog will come in and wake me up when he needs to go. I couldn’t imagine waking up to some nice diarrhea everywhere.

I think part of it was that we had just moved to a new house as well. Our old house he would go and scratch the back door when he wanted out and then come back and scratch the screen door when he wanted back in. New house didn't have that same setup so I'm sure he was confused
