Have 11 in the house with 6 of them at the ready in various locations throughout the house.
Not comparing you, but reminds me of a customer I had back in the 80's. I have a small manufacture/wholesale business and he would pick up product ever 3 or 4 weeks. Said he was retired and had heart problems. He was new in the business and I introduced him to a few people who could help him, so he was always very nice to me.
Rumors abounded he was mafia, so I figured he was laundering $ or something like that. 95% of the time, he came but brought a driver. Other times he just sent a driver. His drivers told me he lived in a mansion on the Ohio River in a little town near Louisville (forgot the name). They said he kept lots of cash in the house, a loaded weapon in every room and had 6 Rottweillers running loose in his house.

He was about 6'3 and 275. He told me a story once. Said he used to be a debt collector for Harrah's Casino in Las Vegas. He said a federal judge from St Louis skipped town on the casino owing 50 grand and they sent him to collect. Said he knocked on the judge's door and asked for the money. The judge said no. He said he was scared of what the judge could do to him, but there was no way he was going back to the casino and tell them he didn't get the money, so he was persistent and the judge paid.

He said before he could get to the airport, he was surrounded by cop cars and they took him to jail. Said he sat in jail a couple of days, but the casino called a supreme court judge who called the federal judge who dropped the charges and paid the debt. Said the casino gave him a 10 grand bonus for doing such a good job.

I don't need a gun. Statistics show less than a .5% chance I'll ever be burglarized, so it's not something I worry about.

Something like 80% of violent crimes involve alcohol and are domestic. So if you want to get murdered, just get drunk with your family a bunch.

(I'm not anti-gun -- just don't understand what everybody is so afraid of)

More like 0.8 second reach time. I sleep on my side so one might be asleep. But two guns strapped above the elbows at all times.

When you factor in:
-coyotes
-snakes
-random dogs in the neighborhood that almost kill your neighbor's little dog
-creepy guys in the neighborhood that approach a mother and teenage daughter as they lay by their pool in the backyard
-neighbors having domestic issues
-etc, etc, etc......

.....chances go up really quickly.......

A good standard for concealed carry is 2 decent shots at 7 yds from the draw in 1.5 seconds.

And the guess-timated time it takes most invaders to kick in your front door and reach the master bedroom is ~12-15 seconds.......assuming that they're looking to go straight there and not look around.

It would probably take me a little longer than 5 seconds in my house, but not in my vehicles.

I'll soon be 66 yrs old and never had a home invasion or a burglary, but I do have two different security systems for peace of mind.

I feel sorry for those of you that live your life in constant fear.

This kind of thinking is so tired.........and very ignorant.
-The likelihood of me having a tire blow out or go completely flat while on the road is very low.......low enough that I don't worry about it. But I still carry a jack, tools, and spare tire.
-I also stock medical supplies in my vehicle and home as well......in case I need them
-I also have food/water supplies in my vehicle and home.....in case the power goes out, ice storms, etc.

Firearms are tools. People are just being prepared.

Hey, man, sorry for your trauma. I totally understand that and sympathize with it.

I appreciate your dedication to being prepared for the worst. However, all of those examples seem like a gigantic false equivalence, but you're certainly within your rights to put those safety nets in place. I have a spare tire too -- I'd argue that a flat tire is universal experience way more likely than encountering a violent criminal.

Again, I'm not anti-gun, I'm just not as concerned about needing one as you all seem.

Although, I wasn't at my apartment at the time I too was a victim of burglary back in college.
i was sitting 12 feet from the back door when the ******* threw an 8lb landscaping rock through the glass door at 2:45am; i was up late watching the commies play ping pong during the olympics. dogs were useless and more shocked than me as i sprung from my chair and chased that son of a ***** back through the busted door. he stepped in and took a pistol from the top of a hutch. pistol always there to shoot the deer that regularly raided my garden. he was too fast for me and i could not catch him.

couple of minutes later, i was on the phone with my dad checking for a piece of plywood while the police took about 12 minutes to arrive. i live in the city limits too. hung up the phone and the adrenaline overload caused me to black out. fell backwards and hit my head on an old jukebox. i awoke hanging by my ankles and my wife shaking me to wake up; i was in shock but she knew what to do and likely saved my life. all of this before the boys in blue showed up. with long shards of glass still stuck in my hands and arms, i was able to get verticle and conscious. the wife walked outside and threw up.

joke was on the ******* in the end. the pistol he stole was a .177 caliber crosman pump single shot BB/pellet pistol. since that night, i wear a pistol on my hip inside the house and out. if you have to reach or search for your weapon, it can be too late.

your safety is your choice, mine is mine. i am sure the cops will be there soon though...

It doesn't really matter how equivalent they are. It's the mindset behind it. The vast, vast, vast majority of people are not living their lives in constant fear. Those that are will be in fear whether they have firearms or not.

I'd argue that it does. House fires are much more common than intrusions, but I don't find it necessary to cuddle an extinguisher at night. Just differing perspectives, I suppose. Saying "you live in fear" is an unfair, blanket statement for sure. I just don't get it.

The answer to your question, yes. I have been around them all of my life and served in the military so they are second nature.

For those of you who are not comfortable around weapons by all means stay away from them. Don't let them in your house. Take your chances. No one will think less of you or make fun of you. The only thing we ask is to leave our right to own and carry alone. We will not harm you or threaten you and we will be responsible the way we were trained to be responsible.

Our sheriff requests we be armed and ready to protect our life and property because chances are he or his deputies can't get to us fast enough in the event of a a crisis. So most of us do

Yes. But it’s in a biometric safe. Actually there’s two there. Tucked away and locked up. One in each vehicle under lock and key. And others in the safe again locked away. Firm believer in owning and possessing but also firearm safety. Live in a rural area and recognize a firearm is just a tool with many uses. Possessing and carrying typically has zero to do with fear as mentioned above.

There's been a few families move into our neighborhood recently. We haven't completed background checks yet ........ but we suspect possible Antifa and BLM activity so I've upped my protection game in the recent days.....

- Guns in both nightstands and a switchblade underneath the mattress for potential hand-to-hand combat.

- 14 loaded firearms underneath every piece of furniture and three in various kitchen cabinets.

- Hired a carpenter to build a hidden compartment inside my shower where I store a .357. Never know when an intruder could come into your home while you're bathing.

- 360 video survelliance accessed by picture-in-picture on my television.

- I built one of those jackets that Travis Bickle used in Taxi Driver, except mine has spring-loaders in both sleeves. Been practicing recently and I'm able to squeeze off 50 rounds in under 10 seconds.

- Also picked up a couple of those flamethrowers that Elon Musk sold for when Antifa or BLM DO show up outside my house. Should provide the shock & awe factor.....

So yes, I'm ready........................

No but I have guns locked up in the gun cabinet. I have motion sensor cameras and a security system. If I need a gun it’s readily available.

But you have a fire extinguisher in your home correct? You have smoke detectors in your home correct? You check the batteries of those detectors on occasion don't you? You might talk to your kids about what to do in case of a fire right? You might talk to your wife about what things to grab if there's a fire right?

But do you live in constant fear of a fire? Nope.......you're just prepared in the unlikely even there is one.

Nobody is trying to saying that you must sleep with a gun on your nightstand......that's to each person. But to make generalized statements based off a lack of understanding what each person's mindset might be is a little much.....don't you think?

I keep a 38 loaded with hollow points in my night stand. I have a mini 22 magnum 5 shot I keep in my desk draw. It's something I could slip into a pocket or even a sock undetected, so if I came to the door during the day and the Fedex Driver turns out to be some crazed skin-head I at least have a weapon.
