Do you think its right or wrong some people are forced to work on Thanksgiving?

Do they work there at will? Pretty sure these things are discussed when you interview
That's a good point. I don't have to work most holidays, but I have quite a few friends who do.

Just wanted to see what everyone thought.

Forced? No one is forced to work on Thanksgiving because you aren't forced to work at a particular job. I was a cop for 4 years and worked almost every holiday during that period. I knew that would happen going into it but still made the CHOICE. Once I had a family I didn't like that condition of my current employment (along with other things), so I made a career change. Anyone can do the same if your willing to.

I know a guy who works at Walmart and actually enjoys working Thanksgiving evening, so do whichever you want. My personal belief is that it's pretty low to put commercialism ahead of the holiday. I refuse to shop on Thanksgiving, even if I have the time to do so.

Some things require people around the clock. My brother works at a power plant. I’m guessing people would get pretty pissed if their power went out every holiday.

Or maybe the patients in the hospital could take care of themselves for a day.

Retail - I assume that it’s mostly part time minimum wage people working. You work when there is a demand for it.

It is what it is, as long as there is capitalism companies will require workers on Thanksgiving, and if there isn't capitalism the government is going to require the same thing, except then you won't have an option to quit and termination might mean something a little more severe.

I was forced at gunpoint to do the dishes after Thanksgiving dinner. I thought about calling the police,
but it would have been more of a hassle to have to bail my Wife out of jail.

If you choose to work retail, it's just part of the job. Pharmacist money is in retail... holidays off only applies about half the time and that is dictated by nothing more than regular, non-holiday scheduling.

I laugh at my sister every year because she bitches about the Walmart/Target opening up on Thanksgiving and having people work during the Holidays while she sits at home watching football.

Yep...I retired from a large chemical company. When I worked in manufacturing, most processes ran 24/7 unless there was a scheduled shutdown for maintenance, and even then we worked around the clock with maintenance to get things back up and running. I've worked many a holiday, including Thanksgiving and Christmas. Many people liked working them though, because we were paid 2.5X out hourly pay. When we worked those holidays, we just had our dinners and gatherings on a different day.

It's freedom of choice. To execute this freedom, stay in school and stay positively connected to others. Do the complete opposite and tragically end up living in the political forum contemplating how miserable you are.

Are you comparing people being without power or medical services to shopping at Walmart on Thanksgiving day? Just curious.

Yes, in as far as creating demand for work. I would agree that shopping on Thanksgiving is not necessary.

Unless you want America to revert back to the stone ages every day on Thanksgiving, someone has to work. People need power and heat at the bare minimum. People travel so gas stations will need to be open unless you expect everyone to do all their traveling the days before and after Thanksgiving.

At least hourly people will normally get extra pay for doing it. Think of the salaried people who get dicked over for no extra pay when they have to work on a holiday. I didn't have to work on Thanksgiving, I had to work the day before when the school was closed. If I had been hourly I would have gotten paid 2.5x my hourly rate. I basically worked the day for free since the school doesn't even do comp days for when people have to work a school holiday.
