no. roper is good, but at the end of the day if these kids care the most about playing with other top recruits, they'll go to duke. it's all about whether or not they wanna shine for the home team / northwestern feels most at home

One can have doubts about CC’s ability to prepare and lead a team, but hard to argue that, on paper, he’s able to recruit above his predecessors. Even following some pretty mediocre years.

True. He just hasn't converted that to results in more than 1 season out of seven.

But that one season was incredible. Can't ever take that away from him. Only time is school history. If he did it before, he can do it again.

Spot on. I guess he delivered that one season of historic proportions, as they say. He did it once, he can do it again.

I've always wondered if you need that first guy to "take the leap" such as Law. Going into the way back machine, Sherman, I always thought that's what Newman was for O'Neill.

For NU, I think it's good to have an early guy in each class - that guy you can point to and say, "Julian Roper from Detroit has signed with us. He's top 150 and moving up. He would have been top 100 if they played summer camps ... yada, yada, yada."

In the case of PBJ and Christie, I can hear, "Look at this group that will be around you. You're the icing on the cake. You're what can change the program."

OTOH, is the "look at this group" discussion a bad thing against Duke?

I'd sell it differently. PBJ and Max would be the cake of the cake... They are the core. The other supporting guys are the icing on top. But that icing looks pretty good and with a better core, has a shot at making the cake a winner at the county fair.

There's no way it hurts to have a guy with Roper's talents already in the fold as the others evaluate the pros and cons of their various options.

Getting the first guy in a class is oftentimes the hardest. 2017 class (year NU only got Gaines) is a cautionary tale.

If we get Baldwin Jr and Christie, our 2021-22 season roster looks like this:

Greer SR 6-2
Kopp SR 6-7
Gaines (?) SR 6-4
Nance SR 6-10

Buie JR 6-2
Audige JR 6-4
Young JR 6-10
Beran JR 6-9

Berry SO 6-3
Nicholson SO 7-1

Roper FR 6-3
? Baldwin FR 6-9
? Christie FR 6-5

That's a really balanced, solid team. Even without PBJ or Christie, that is still a very good team.

Where is the final 4 being played in 2022?

Don't you think if both Christie and Baldwin play someplace else, the only way they use that 13th scholarship is for an ABSOLUTE stud?

If Collins can't get someone he truly believes in for the 12th schollie, I hope he goes big. Without Jones, the roster is looking small again.

Couldn't hurt.

Ultimately, recruits want to play where they can win (and where they are going to get a lot of playing time - which don't think PBJ and Christie have to worry about).

A backcourt w/ Boo, Berry, Roper and Audige should be a nice mix of talent and experience.

The addition of PBJ and/or Christie (but esp. both) would take the frontcourt of Kopp, Nance, Beran, Young and Nicholson to another level.

Would give CC a lot of options/flexibility where can see him opting for small-ball a good portion of the time.

247's crystal ball has both headed to Dook, but think there's a chance w/ things looking up for the 'Cats and the whole pandemic possibly changing the outlook for many recruits (staying closer to home so parents/family members can see them play w/o having to hop on a commercial flight).

Yes, but it wouldn't have been incredible but for a fortuitous break (pun intended).

W/o Lumpkin, they don't make the Dance and there wouldn't have been Sanjay if he 1st hadn't gotten mono and then breaking his wrist - paving the way for a RS year.

I can have a PBJ anytime I want, regardless of whom is recruited by NU basketball.
