When CC first came on, thru the NCAA season, it seemed like his father was a constant presence in the stands. At least, it seemed that way from the broadcasts. At the time, I thought it was a great advantage for CC to have such a great resource for counsel.

Now, I can't remember the last time I saw him or heard mention of him (though I have to admit I haven't been closely monitoring, as it's become more and more painful to sit thru these games). Just wondering if he's still around but not shown as much because the novelty's worn off, or if he's stepped away to some degree...and if the latter, what effect that's had on CC's job performance.

I saw him and talked to him at the Prudential Center during either the Providence game or the next one against Georgia. I told him I'd see him at the NCAA Tournament! Ha,

When CC was in the Final Four at Duke, Doug asked the broadcast crew not to make him part of the story, that this should only be about Chris. My guess is he did the same here.

I always assumed that, at some point, he wanted the focus to be on his son.

As for the counsel, it is there or not if wanted. I’m sure they have phones and all

“Sometimes it took every ounce of self-restraint for me not to punch Doug Collins in the mouth,” Scottie Pippen wrote. “That is one fine I would have been happy to pay.”

During Pippen’s rookie season, Collins yelled at him, “You don’t deserve your paycheck the way you’re playing!” Pip was humiliated when he heard that and didn’t respect how Collins delivered criticism.
“The best coaches are critical in a constructive manner,” Pippen wrote in his book. “They don’t humiliate their players. They nurture them. Not Doug. Never Doug.”

makes you wonder...

Doug Collins is not living in Chicago anymore. He moved back to the Philly area.

Yeah, his takes have been really spot on after his retirement. I am amazed at the garbage that greats dragged into these posts to support positions. Doug yelling at Pip (assuming he did) has nothing to do with CCC. Missed shots by CCC at Duke in the last 4 minutes of a game have nothing to do with NU late game performance. Geez.

I don't put any stock in one quote, especially from Scottie Pippen.

But I do find relevant that DC was run out of town very quickly everywhere he was. He had what I thought was a small miracle season in Philly. Following a 27-55 season, he took over and ended with a 41-41 record. It all went downhill after.

I also find relevant that his coaching career was over at 62. Or that, in 28 years of coaching, he was active for 15.

Finally I think people over estimate the wisdom of someone who, on top of all of the above, never coached college basketball.

There is an article out there on "the internet" that I stumbled across sometime in the last 6 months.
A few of his Philly players commenting about his coaching style.
I'm paraphrasing...
"When we won, Doug took the credit. When we lost it was our fault."

The point I was making is Doug is not Chris. For better or worse. I always thought Doug came off as a ball buster. As the top pick in the NBA draft, he seemed to expect perfection or at least was less tolerant of mistakes. Chris comes off as waiting too long to address deficiencies.

CCC problems are not enough wins! It’s not being mini-Doug and I feel any suggestion of a comparison in styles unsupported.

As I said earlier...
Before my post was taken down...

Chris Collins is very animated / emotional on the sidelines, just like his father.

In the game against Penn State, Coach Chris Collins not only left the coaching box, he scampered across midcourt, on the floor, during live action, shouting instructions at our defense. A ref ran toward him (analogy deleted) with both hands up as if to push him back into the coaching box. For some reason the ref did not issue a technical foul, which was certainly deserved.

And to clarify another technical point...

It is never "unsupported" to do a comparison.
Comparing two things is an intellectual pursuit.
It is the conclusions that are potentially unsupported.

Now you are arguing semantics.

I don’t understand your point. Who cares if the Coach gets an occasional technical? As long as it is at the fight time. Did you watch Underwood lose his $@&$ against OSU? What did his team do? Immediately went on a tear and just about came back from a 16 point deficit. I was fire in the belly of my HC.

since I can’t understand your point, here is mine. I CONCLUDE that how Chris Coaches has zero to do with how Doug Coached. However, if John Wooden has a grandson or granddaughter, I am all for replacing CCC with him/her.

Trust me. I worked with the Bulls daily, for many years in an indirect, but very close manner and Scottie is without doubt, the biggest POC that ever wore the uniform of the Bulls. He deserved what Doug said to him. Neither Doug or Phil would put up with Pippen.
