Lame.

Focus on selling some tickets to people who don't ******* root for the other team in your own building, not wrist slapping students.

Had to be said. It's now been said. It won't matter again because Miller Kopp was such a unique situation that likely won't be repeated again. Time to move on.

That was a pretty vanilla response. Odds seem super high that Miller will never play at WR again and Gragg knows this, man.
He's out of eligibility, so the last 3-pointer at Welsh-Ryan will be the one the clanged off the side of the backboard.

Collins was upset by it in the post-game presser. He feels Miller is getting a bad rap, and he really supported him. I suspect Coach K would have taken the PA mic and said "cut the crap out". I've seen him do it.

Kind of ironic since he has about the foulest mouth in sports. I think he would have said cut the "f...kn crap out."

Perfect response from Gragg.

I’d fully support vulgarity against Iowa, but I think Kopp is a unique situation.

Regardless, I hope the students dig deep and get in Iowa players’ heads just like they have in NU’s previous two home wins.

Don’t call ‘em pig-f*ckers, tho. That was Midvale’s line.

Every AD in the conference (and probably in the country) would issue a similar statement if their student section was heard on national TV chanting "F*CK YOU" at an opposing player. If you expect Gragg (or Collins) to say anything different you're being ridiculous.

Statement made more as a pr gesture than anything else.

Situation was more of a once in multi decade occurrence due to Kopp’s special circumstances.

I’d rather have the kids show up and cross the line occasionally than have the student sections empty

Appropriate statement. A gentle wrist slap to the students while praising their huge impact this year on the atmosphere at WR.

He had to issue this statement; if we were 3-23, nobody would care and an incident like this could be ignored. But we're #2 in the Big Ten, heading to the NCAA tournament, and coming off victories against Purdue and Indiana. The eyes of college basketball have been on us the past 2 weeks, so this is an appropriate CYA statement to let the Big Ten/Indiana/rest of conference know that we take it seriously.

If I had been there with my grandchildren, I would have left. I don't use the F word and I think it is vulgar. There is a higher road and Mr Gregg pointed it out to a young and immature audience who he has an obligation as a leader of young people to influence.

Daddy, daddy, I'm gettin' so hungry
I need sumptin' to put in my belly
I know the game at Northwestern is about to start
But first I need some meat to fuel my farts

Daddy, we've got their number
We can make it in time
Daddy, let's get some rub there

When they win, the whole state is happy
It's best to eat before the game comes on
We need a proper degustation before the big Francon

Daddy, I've got a hankerin'
I need to taste some rind
Daddy, don't forget the cole slaw

Heaven forbid! I shudder to think of your reaction when the crowd chanted “bullsh*t” in unison after a bad referee call. To have to explain that sort of behavior to children at a sporting is absolutely unthinkable.

You are right StreamCat and your post about having a grandchild at the Purdue game actually changed my mind on the issue. That being said, It is a unique situation and I don't see it happening again.

No. Ya know what, ******** is not as bad as an F Bomb. I get that people are going to be rowdy. The F word is the ultimate vulgarity in English IMO and should be reserved for limited outbursts in personal use. I think Dr Gragg's announcement was reasonable. It's not like he made punitive threats or established a language police department.
If somehow we ended up playing the school that Chase came from I would hope he would get better treatment. He made a life decision and has worked hard to get where he is.

“Miller’s a c*nt, Miller’s a c*nt” is worse.

Or, perhaps
“A c*nt, a c*nt
Miller Kopp is a f*cking c*nt”

is worse.

Nance or Young or Casey Simmons or Rapolas Ivanauskas or Isiah Brown would never get that treatment.

Kopp a) trashed the program on the way out, b) is the same limited player as he’s always been, and c) is apparently a tool on Twitter which proves that the critics matter to him.

He is, in fact, a “f*cking c*nt”, and I am overjoyed that he played like one. The crowd’s joy at his missed shots was beautiful.

As I understand it, he’s useless in road games. I fully support NU fans getting in his head by all means necessary.

The joy of being 18-22 and able to attend a fancy private college is that, improbably, society has deemed public intoxication and public vulgarity as totally acceptable.

I sheepishly smiled when I clearly heard the chant through the TV screen, and I also laughed when Hummel and his partner made jokes about Kopp ‘not helping with their math homework’ rather than going the “THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE AND CLASSLESS” route.

It was classless, but part of the charm of college sports. Big Time College Sports.

The F word is not the ultimate vulgarity in the English language, c*nt is. The student section didn’t call him that. In England just dropping the f bomb in his direction would be taking it rather easy. That said and jokes aside it’s not all that creative and disrespectful to use at someone. I take an easier approach with the f word with my 5 year old (yes she even hears it at the playground). As long as it is not at someone or in earshot from the teachers your fine. It’s f’ing cold outside or what the f = ok, f you = not ok

This is exactly it. I know for a fact that [for another sport] a previous AD came out and made a similar statement, while simultaneously telling the kids to keep it up.

I worked for a company based outside Oxford, England and traveled there about every 6 weeks for 15 years. I was always amazed at how casually people used the F word, even on BBC tele. Quite a difference from the US.

To be fair always amazed at these 18-22 (or older) kids and their ability to not get too rattled. If fans were screaming f u at me in unison my 50% FT rate (best recorded in HS) would have dropped to zero….never mind the “air ball” chant. If I were playing that would drive me absolutely nuts. Tremendously thick skin needed as a baller indeed. Maybe part of the reason I respect the sport so much.
