Saw a decent documentary on Prime about a drive-in in Pennsylvania that is still showing 35MM films because of the prohibitive cost of going digital. The ones in Etown and Radcliff were torn down decades ago, and the one closest to me now, in Summerville is digital and shows only "hits".

Anybody remember when drive-ins used to show a lot of grind house crap? I grew up on that trash. The one I went to as a kid would show a big hit like "Trading Places" but it would be paired with something like "Vigilante". Or, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" with "Basket Case" haha. Sometimes there would be a triple feature of "Blues Brothers", "Up in Smoke", and "Next Movie". Man, those were the days.

Unless you’re smashing in the back seat, drive-ins are very overrated. Doesn’t start until dark. Still hot. Terrible sight lines. Always some loud mouth family in front or next to you. Hard pass.

We use to go to the 27 Drive-In in Somerset a lot growing up, especially once we got our drivers license because it was 2 feature films for $5 (it's still open but $8 now).

As an adult starting a double feature at 9:30 sounds awful. At least growing up we had the benefit of being an hour behind Somerset on central time.

When I was a kid in the early 70s, my parents would take us to the hometown drive-in fairly regularly. I could never figure out until I got older why we always parked in the first row.

When I got older.... oh, the stories I could tell....

Last time I went to the drive-in, we parked on the back row. Back in those days parking in the back row meant submarine races. Things started out great, heavy kissing and petting, then she ask if I wanted to get into the back seat, I said **** no, I wanna stay up here with you......She put me out and I had to hitch a ride home..

There was a drive in theater on the highway going to my grandmother's house in Mississippi. Long, boring trip, but it was worth waking up to catch a glimpse of a bare breast on the big screen, sheltered by the tall pines.

I reminisce too often, wish I could go back for a while. No smart phones, you had to hunt friends down or get word where they went. That seems a lot less convenient but that’s not always a bad thing.

best part is you can bring your own food and beverages, and by that i mean beer.
lawn chairs, a cooler, and a triple feature of top gun, days of thunder, and risky business.
only one drive-in within 75 miles of me. sucks...

edit: the last several years we had one in durham, the snack shack also rented movies and sold firearms. very nice i must say!

Both drive-ins in Denver area are doing a big business right now, with restrictions, of course. I looked a couple of times for me and the wife and they were completely sold out for Fri, Sat and Sunday. It gets dark here around 8:30 and turns cool with no humidity. Would be ideal for hanging out, bringing your own food and drinks, have the volume how you want it, don't have to worry about someone directly beside you talking throughout the whole movie, etc. I think it sounds like a good idea, personally. Wouldn't do it somewhere humid like Houston, though.

I've been to the one in Oldham County twice this year. Being cold was a bigger problem than hot.

The best possible movie-viewing option is, and always will be, on my 70 inch TV from my couch. Drive ins were OK for what they were, two and three generations ago. Sounds dreadful now.

I went to the Starlight in Owensboro as a kid and another one that I can't remember the name. The Starlight on W Parrish ave seemed to always have screen damage after a big storm. It's amazing how those things ever stayed up.

Man I’d spend summers in the Marshall County area and we loved Calvert City drive in. Still take the kids and we still love it.

Food is really good, and it’s just great family time despite the OFF, bugs, heat, etc.

no matter how much I grow old, I’ll always enjoy that place!

In the late 60's, both Starlight and Reo charged by per-person...'58 Chevies had a HUGE trunk. BTW, Reo still going with multiple screens.

We usually go once or twice per summer and take the kids. They enjoyed it a lot more when they were younger though.
