Instead of driving straight through sat morning I'm gonna leave Friday morning and take my time. Gonna stop for the night somewhere and enjoy the trip a little more. Will be heading out in a few weeks so any places to see, eat or stay will be appreciated. No children will be going.

Will take about 4 hours to get to Athens AL. Get off at the main exit onto whatever that road is, 50 something I think, go East back over 65 and just on your right next to a Raceway or Speedway there is a little bbq shack. Eat lunch there. Get back on 65 and head South, don't stay in Athens.

Just did that drive. Seriously get a good audiobook, really makes the trip more enjoyable.

Really not a ton on the way...Smith Farms in northern alabama has some nice stuff, they sell Troyer beef jerky which is a favorite...

Just set your GPS, when you turn off I-65 I've always found the Georgina exit the quickest...

But most importantly, figure out when you will pass Nashville. Traffic has been awful.

I'd stop in Auburn, AL if I were you. There's a dude that lives just outside of town that runs a night club out of his single-wide. Has a nice fenced in back yard to piss in if the line for the bathroom gets too long.

We stop in Prattville, AL there's a nice Marriott Courtyard there on a golf course and you can typically get decent prices. Nice little area with a Mellow Mushroom for a good pizza. Get up in the morning and you are basically 3 hours from Destin, which gives you a fairly short drive and then almost the entire day on the beach if you don't sleep in too late.

If we have a Sat/Sat condo rental, we'll leave Friday afternoon from Nashville and stay in Prattville instead of getting up at 5 in the morning, driving 7 hours and checking in around 12:30 or so...by then we are half worn out.

We found a great condo on 30A later this summer and negotiated a good rate---12 nights. It's been many a year since I've had that long in one place to do nothing but sit on the beach. Especially with light travel to get there.

We stay in Birmingham and grab a pizza at Jim Davenport's in Mountain Brook Village. Then on Saturday morning stop at Preaster's Pecans about 30 minutes before you get off the interstate. Best Pecans in America.

Why stop anywhere else. Pretty classy though.

If we are staying Saturday to Saturday, we leave out early afternoon on Friday, drive to Evergreen and stay there. It is just a few hours from there and usually get off and drive thru Florence, Al I think it is. When you turn off, there is a nice little Church's Chicken across from a Piggly Wiggly. Just do not stop there if it is dark. After exiting I65 there is no easy way to get there.

Damn...beat me to it. Boobie Bungalow for sure.

No offense to your travel plans, but taking your time to get to the beach sounds miserable. Why not get there as fast as possible and then take your time doing what you want to do? Nothing sounds worse than enjoying your time driving on 65 south. Plus, you act like Destin is forever away. Leave early in the morning and arrive late afternoon. Do yourself a favor.

^ exactly. Then rest/relax on the beach/pool when you get there, which should be the entire reason you are going to begin with.

Never understood that line of thinking/traveling.

Actually it is doing that exact thing. If you do not check in to your condo until Saturday, driving most of the distance the day before and then getting a room, actually helps get you there early Saturday instead of wasting a relaxing day traveling and not getting there until mid afternoon Saturday check in day. So in fact, you get a full day relaxing on check in day. We have actually drove the whole distance Friday and got a "decent" hotel on the beach the day before check in. Get there late Friday pm, check in the telly, order pizza, then spend the evening relaxing on the beach.

The drive down is not as interesting as it used to be. Back in the day there were some cool road side shops (antiques and books, etc) owned by the locals that were cool to stop at.

Those are all gone now and they aren't coming back. Same with the occasional local-owned BBQ shops and eateries along the route.

I've been driving down sat morning and getting there sat late afternoon for years. I just happen to be off the Friday before and thought I'd get an early start on my vacation. That's why I'm leaving early!
