Duke builds their team around 2-4 Freshmen every year.

However, you can now supplement those teams in the portal with vets and pay the failed OAD's to return.

Peak Calipari at Kentucky would be crushing it in this landscape as well.
they just got w final four so they must not be doing too bad, their returners are also guys like evans and brown, so they gave both experience and talent

It really is a shame Cal killed his fan support (and seemed to shut himself off from the fanbase in general) before this era. If he had the NIL funds Pope has, and was able to get the top recruits with high level transfers to plug gaps, the sky would've been the limit. Obviously he's doing a version of this down Fayetteville. But I think he's over the hill, and will continue to have good-not-great teams.

Not just money, that staff can flat out recruit.

lol Scheyer isn’t doing a damn thing. Nike and their foreign donors handle it all. Duke, until the Nike merger, weren’t doing sht. Add in the NCAA allowing rampant cheating and how could they not recruit?

The way it always was coach K and Duke would never be able to take a freshman from Calipari who developed a system designed FOR them. coach K had a horrible reputation with freshman ask Elton Brand about it. Nike, and the NCAA, gave Duke the push they needed to erase decades of reputation as a program that would hold you back if you were an NBA freshman. That’s not a light you can turn on and off. They didn’t do ****.

and oh look, they haven’t been to a title game in over a decade with all those players. At least Calipari has an excuse, hard to do it with #17 freshman in the class at 4 positions. Dukes record with these guys is absolutely laughable.

Can you name me a coach with zero head coaching experience in history that came in and landed the #1 class?

Didn’t think so. If Scheyer wasn’t at Duke, he wouldn’t be doing close to this. This is about Duke Nike and a few mega wealthy men. Nothing at all to do with scheyer. How you can’t see that is the mystery. And he’s not really that good of a coach either. You can clearly see he’s nowhere near a coach K level guy.

K running USA Basketball was and is the biggest unfair advantage ever

Bingo. This is another thing that has culminated into the Duke brand being given way unfair advantages. Coach K kept team USA for himself when other men said it’s not a seat 1 man should keep. Dean Smith could have kept it and didn’t.

Duke isn’t doing this because of scheyer, he’s just a gatekeeper. He was handed a golden staff which can’t fail. It wouldn’t suprise me if they didn’t hardly hear from him at all until just before campus. This is all behind the scenes corruption because coach K was the most corrupt man to ever grace the sidelines.

Yep, his Arkansas team beat mighty Samford by 4 points tonight and they were playing at home to boot. Bet those Arky fans were excited by that.

They don’t know or care. Their arena is over half empty for most of these games. They will know and care when they play us but other than that, they forget they have a basketball team.

Thought they were rabid basketball fans out there? Is that era over for them as they've had a decent history in the game and reputation as a hard place to play in.

It sure ain’t 1994 in Fayetteville anymore. Don’t get me wrong, they still get rowdy for big games but they don’t show up for a lot of games. I can’t say whether they did back in the day or not but I definitely know they don’t now

And they're a top 25 ranked team, interesting. I guess the Richardson days are long gone out there.

Is this a UK basketball forum or a place to share Duke basketball recruiting news?
Nice response
Uk was supposedly involved with this kid early on and didn't even get a visit.
Uk has no one near this talented on the roster and supposedly spent 22 million no do they have any commitments. Much rather have this player than Mo D

Only two final fours in ten years with zion, tatum, flagg, pablo....

When Cal had this level of talent, he went to final four 4 times in five years

This but not for the reasons we all thought at the time. At the time, we all thought it was because K got so much more time with the young guys. Turned out he barely spent any time with them.

Turned out the reason was Jerry colangelo was instrumental in basically turning USA basketball over to nike, where K made the connections. That resulted in Nike steering every recruit they could to Duke.

The most notorious instance was Harry Giles. There were plenty more but that was the most open. Of course the NCAA did nothing despite an avalanche of evidence.

Duke has so many things in their favor as far as getting who they want and as many as they want. Talk about doing less with more, they have more often than not had the best of the best and should have more championships than they do have. You would think more players would want to beat them instead of join them, but the log jam on the bench doesn’t seem to bother them until the second year or so. Doesn’t make sense.

Arkansas never has been rabid like UK, they’re a football bunch that has nothing to do for basketball season so they’ve always payed more attention compared to a program like Bama.

Tennessee is the second biggest basketball following in the SEC. Arena mostly packed, fans always watch, usually interested. Lots of posting on their boards and so on. They’re just a rival with Kentucky who’s always kicked their teeth in and have no final fours or titles. Really good history in reality, very overshadowed, lack of March hardware. Then Memphis always went further even though they really aren’t as good historically. Tennessee still has the head to head against them.

So from what I’ve seen traveling and dealing with fanbases and growing up in TN, I think Tennessee probably has had historically the second biggest basketball following in the SEC. Not Arkansas. Arkansas is down the list. Another very underrated basketball following is MSST. when they’re good they’re tuned in. I’ve seen some crazy games there in the 90’s.

Florida is trash for fanbases. They can win titles and still not garner much. Too much competition in the state. Auburn is growing in this area but not sure how long that lasts with Pearl gone. It was all about him. Ole Miss and LSU are the weakest arenas I’ve ever been to, worse than Murray. I’ve been to Ole Miss games in Oxford that we had full access to the court and walked down to the bench / on the court after the games, pretty much anything you want because nobody was there at all. And I mean go anywhere and do anything and nobody says a word. Back in the Tad Pad days. I laugh everytime I see ole miss fans talk like Beard loves it there and wouldn’t leave. It’s total trash for basketball. Oh he’ll go, the second he can lol.

Money is doing everyone’s recruiting now, but let’s not split hairs here, the coaching staffs, particularly the head coach, still gets the credit!

If UK’s donors pay Stokes for Pope, does he not get the credit? Let’s all be mature adults here, and stop being sore losers…

Our rivals are taking UK’s lunch money right now, and we have every reason to be concerned!
