Duke Suspends Classes

On a second note unc will not suspend classes for athletes since they don't go to class anyway. OFC

Can’t tell if people are overreacting or we’re currently in the first ten minutes of a pandemic movie.

I have reason to doubt that re[port. It assumes that there were classes they were required to attend. Can't attend what you are not in.
I wonder if it could be because of concerns of students being in close proximity to the hospital and the possibility of a patient coming into the hospital and being diagnosed and treated for coronavirus and the potential for it to spread throughout the hospital and the school which makes sense to some extent because like they say, they want to get you in and out of the hospital as quick as possible because you’re more likely to catch something while in the hospital than anywhere.

I haven’t heard anything about any new cases in North Carolina since an article I found that said that there were 5 new cases in Wake County and all 5 of those people had been to some sort of Global Conference in Boston last week. I’ll have to see if I can find the website that I found earlier toddy that keeps track of the number of cases of coronavirus in the U.S.
Here’s a link to a website that updates the number of cases of coronavirus that are discovered. It says that it updates everyday Monday through Friday at 4pm.

I didn’t know Quavarius was the president of the school!
It’s moreso that 100s of Duke kids would be returning from Spring break on Sunday from areas with plenty of untested cases. By delaying one week, those exposed will start to show symptoms and thus not return. It’s what all NC colleges will do by Friday.
I don’t bet, never have. That said, I’ll bet everything I own it’s the former (overreaction). I get where Duke is coming from though - they have little to lose here since classes can be handled remotely.
I know right? It’s almost as if the people at Duke know what they’re doing when it comes to human health.
There have been 7 total here in North Carolina including the 5 I mentioned in my post with the link. Along with the 5 that were confirmed in Wake County, one of the first two was also in Wake County but unrelated to the most recent 5. One of the first two had recently been to Washington State where about a dozen or so elderly people in a nursing home had died from coronavirus and the other of the first two had recently returned from Italy. The most recent 5 had all attended a Global Conference UNC Boston within the last week.
I guess I’m the President of EVERYTHING!
Fats Parties are still on, and Enterprise still renting cars, so there has been no effect to the everyday life of UNC BB players.
Yeah, remember, Duke isn’t a local school... it draws students from around the globe. Bringing everyone back at this point might be foolish, not just from a health perspective but also from a liability perspective.
Harvard and Princeton have done the same, IIRC, as have the NYC schools (Columbia, NYU). My guess is this will continue until the virus dies down.

Meaning they know how to handle the situation? It’s pretty easy; go hyper conservative, which they obviously did.
I sat with one of the countries top virologists yesterday who said they’re not concerned about this in the states, but you know what? They’re going full tilt on their recent approval and distribution of a covid test, “striking while the iron is hot”. Quest, LabCorp, and Opko aren’t the only ones who can get in the fray. Capitalism and competition at its finest.
Some countries have/will be stung harder due to age (Italy being one of the oldest countries, particularly N Italy), and genetic makeup (a convo far to deep to start here). Here more people will get it, far more people than are recorded have it or have “gotten it”, and unless you’re elderly or have specific comorbidities, you’ll carry on.
Perfect now team can practice without NCAA time limitations.
This is the new norm at the moment. Here in NJ Rutgers and Princeton have gone to virtual classes. My son at University of Delaware and my son at a small school in PA are both about to do the same. There are a lot of unknowns at the moment. Whether it's seen as panic or not, at least it's some sort of proactive steps being taken.
I will not be shocked if we see NCAA Tourney games without fans. Crazy as it sounds. It's the direction this thing is headed.

I tend to agree for several reasons, but I have to assume that legal liabilities will make organizers extremely anxious?
(I am not a lawyer, and did not even sleep at a Best Western last night.)
The silver lining is there’s a fire drill being performed so when a really bad sickness hits, we should be better prepared. Should be.
As said above, I'm sure the legal dept. of these schools are advising caution as the better course of action. Especially at schools that have significant foreign populations (most).
Ita definitely not an overreaction. The world health organization just put declared it a global pandemic. Some of the worlds top scientists are apart of WHO. 3.5% mortality rate that has increased from 2. Something and you can get it again after getting over it. Italy didn’t shut itself down due to “ media craze” . The NCAA makes bank every tourney from the fans, it has to be that bad for them to willingly give that up so easy.
