Dumbest move ever...school closings...

ok...little history here.

Back in about 1985-86, I was but a wee lad, attending Claremore schools. One year, Don Woods predicted the storm of the century for Rogers county, and they closed school for Thursday and Friday of that week....and guess what? Not a damn thing happened (much like my luck with snow nowadays) and we had two days out of school with no snow to play in. Atari 2600 and bike riding all day...

Now, it's 2015. Claremore, Tulsa and Verdigris all closed school for tomorrow after the weather men have been saying we are going to get a major ice storm here. I have watched the weather closely for years....and you can always count on one thing...when they say it's going to be a huge snow and ice storm, it probably won't be. It's those unexpected bastids that dose us up pretty good.

So...my stepkids are gleefully excited to be out of school tomorrow....but I can almost feel this is going to be another chili fart forecast....already looks like it's all going to miss us, at least the most of it.

So, guess they didn't learn from past history around here...don't close the schools unless there's proof on the ground. I get that it could be bad for the kiddies at 3pm, but why close school in the middle of the week for weather that hasn't happened yet? Already predicting the crap won't hit until sometime after noon...and it really doesn't look that bad. Perhaps I will eat crow on this one, but I kinda doubt it.

I left my Tulsa home this morning at 6:30AM. My kids, Jenks schools, have school canceled. It was raining when I left and KRMG kept talking about freezing weather.
I am now in OKC (8:00AM) and there is no weather to speak of in OKC. Had a couple of meetings today and I arrive to find an email from someone, who lives in OKC, that they can't make a meeting due to schools closed in OKC. There is absolutely nothing going on currently in OKC -- although they are predicting bad weather starting this afternoon.

It would be a logistical nightmare for a ton of people if they had closed schools early instead of all day. It might be fine now, but give it a few hours. It is already beginning to ice over in Tulsa now.

It's definitely a damned if you do damned if you don't situation. The same people on my FB feed this morning griping about school being canceled were the same ones griping a few weeks ago when the storm hit around 10:00AM and it was slick after school.

Rulz I was in high school at Jenks during the storm of the century that fizzled. If I remember correctly, a couple of weeks later and another storm came through. This time none of the large school districts canceled, not wanting egg on their face twice in a month. Naturally, the storm did hit and dumped a ton of snow (for Tulsa) starting around lunchtime.

It has pooped a little ice here in Verdigris, but if you look at the radar it's doing its usual thing and going right around us and reforming about 10 miles north. Amazing.

It's going to give us a dusting just like it always does. Maybe the Terra nitrogen plant keeps us from having serious weather? LOL! I don't know, it's just weird.

Not bad in the Tulsa area...ice on windshields is a pain. You do have to have a brain and drive carefully, but nothing tough yet. I think we are teaching our children not to 1. get up 2. go to work and 3. be on time.

I've already heard it in the work place..."but the schools are out...."

I now sound like my parents 40 years ago.

It's about to get nasty here in Edmond. Sleet is coming down.

It was smart to cancel. Otherwise you've got a good chance there's schools full of kids who have to get home in horrible conditions.

Wow. If yall want a good laugh, just check out the radar for Verdigris and Claremore. It's awesome.

Barely a flake today. Yeah, we had a little sleet earlier, but what appears to be a rather large cell just constantly unzips its fly right over my area and farts, then zips back up and continues on up north just spreading white frosties all over hell and back.

I am nonplussed.

We got our one 3 incher snow queef last week, guess we are good for the year.

My inner child was somewhat happy with last weeks snow....but I remember all the big snows we used to get even into March while growing up. I feel weather patterns are cyclical and I don't think there's anything otherworldly going on here...but it's been a long time since Rogers County has had a snowfall that I would consider "closing school" worthy.


Maybe I will go out and make a mud angel. Yeesh.
