Oweh, Aberdeen will be out of eligibility

And JQ will leave regardless, he will be first round pick no matter how well he plays next season

---------------

So how many other guys will stay...

Not sure if Garrison will stay even if he is not good enough for NBA next year because people he is "two year deal" for us. Also, it is possible year 2 Moreno will be better than Garrison.

If Jasper will make progress and be OAD player...

Just guessing...

JJ
Moreno
Hawthorne
Potter
Jelavic
Dioubate
Noah
Chandler
Williams

Think we lose JQ, Garrison, Lowe and probably one or more of the above....maybe Jelavic.

Would be solid if we bring back 7 guys and I have 9 listed.

Realistically, can probably take a quarter of these guys and assume they transfer or go pro, but would be outstanding to retain them.

I was going to start the exact same thread today.

Great minds.

I’m going with:

Oweh
Aberdeen
Quaintance
Williams
Garrison

Quaintance is projected lottery, so like you said, he’s gone.

Williams has the length and shooting to play in the NBA. Even if he is a second rounder, I think he bolts.

Pope said that Garrison was on a two year plan, so I think he plans on leaving. He might stick around if he doesn’t get a guarantee and the money is right at UK, but with all the size Pope has stockpiled, I feel like he is planning for Garrison’s departure after this season.

Jelavic is another possibility, but he is hard to project until we see him in college. I think he stays for a second season, unless he proves to be way better than I expect.

Johnson is another one that might jump, but I think he’s like Pettiford and Philon this year, he will test the waters and come back.

Lowe and Dioubate has some of the same size issues as Oweh and will make more coming back to college.

The rest should be back, barring some of them deciding to find more PT elsewhere or blowing up unexpectectedly.

So, for our early projection of our top 10, I have 9 returning and we will add a good HS player at PG. I’m thinking Kinney, but maybe Crowe. If not, we go to the portal for a backup PG.

Starters

PG Lowe
SG Johnson
SF Chandler
PF Dioubate
C Jelavic

I feel like Johnson and Chandler both have to start. I think that would give us the shooting and scoring punch we need on the perimeter. Jelavic will be a 23 year old Sophomore wanting to get to the NBA and could be a force inside once he gets acclimated to the college game. Dioubate will be the heart and soul of that unit.

Bench

G Kinney (or Crowe or Portal)
F Noah
F Hawthorne
F Moreno
F Potter

I feel like Hawthorne, with a little more meat on his bones, could be a significant player by then. Probably our sixth man. Moreno and Potter would give us some massive size off the bench behind Dioubate and Jelavic. Moreno might start some. Dioubate might slide to the 3 some and Pope could play Dioubate, Jelavic, and Moreno together.

Pope probably grabs 1 or 2 bench guys from the HS ranks and 1 or 2 from the portal to fill out the rotation.

That’s a strong team, if everyone I have returning comes back. No guarantees in the portal age, but I was really impressed by the loyalty shown by most of the players. I was kind of shocked by Perry leaving, but he was the outlier. The rest seemed pretty content to remain Wildcats. I expect the same next year.

If JQ is lottery, he goes. but theoretically if he ends up not playing a ton due to his recovery, then I can see a path where he might come back for the right NIL deal. That's doubtful though. Garrison is probably 50/50, but if he makes improvements in his overall game, He could be a great third year guy (in the system) for Pope. JJ and Moreno will depend on how they play. I see both of them as likely two and dones.

The rest will hinge on How we do this year. If we win a Championship and if guys want to try and repeat. I like to think we will only lose 3 to 5 guys at most. Then we will be able to be pretty selective as to who we take from the portal next year to pair with hopefully a couple of high level recruits.

Even if Pope returned 7 or 8 of them, it would feel like the 1990s again in terms of player retention.

The keys for me will be getting JJ, Moreno, Jelavic, and Hawthorne all back. That's a hell of a freshmen class to build around going forward.

I don’t understand the consensus here on Garrison. He will not be back after this upcoming season. He is an all-conference selection and a first round NBA draft pick next summer. Mark Pope will get a lot of credit for developing BG and it will be deserved.

I think Kam Williams will enter the draft no matter what. NBA teams are really talking him up after last year. Not sure he stays in draft but he will be looking. Garrison will declare as well as Mo (if he has a good year) and Jelavic. I think almost all come back but would not be surprised if 1 or 2 stay in the draft. JJ not sure. Got to see him play in the college game.
Chandler / Noah / Moreno / Potter / Hawthrone

Chandler / Noah / Moreno / Potter / Hawthrone probably more likely to stay in college, not sure all stay at UK. Never know.

A lot of money to be made by staying in school these days. Guys that in the past would have bolted as soon as they had a hint of success are now coming back to make bank through NIL.

So, nowadays, unless they are a guaranteed first rounder, there is a good chance they return.

I mean do you want to play in the G-League for less than a million or come back and play in college and make 2-3 million?

Next year may be 100% different depending on how the settlement shakes out.
If people aren’t cheating, Tennessee, The bidding wars will be over. That should keep more guys put. If bidding wars are done, we could have everyone back that has eligibility that won’t get drafted.
