Build a theme park, Nice golf courses, bunch of casinas and bars. Name it MyrtleBeachKingsIslandLasvegas, KY. No way it would fail. Maybe grow some grapes, but would not really be a must.

My extensive research on this has led me to the conclusion that they should focus on becoming a "personal services" economy.

Here's a new billboard they could create for tourism.

Do you enjoy a lack of culture?
Do you consider Applebees a "nice" restaurant?
Do you like to take your shirt off when you're about to fight someone and then call them "*****?"
Do you think sleeves on shirts are for said ******?
Do you enjoy 2-3 hour drives to the "big city" for shopping?
Do you want to live in a town where the movie theater is still showing "The Nutty Professor 2?"
Do you still love high school sports and Natural Lite?


Then come on down to Eastern Kentucky.

They will just have to stick it near one of these billboards first.

Always could smell Ashland when I drove on the interstate and thought that was bad.
Then I went camping in PA and my girlfriend had me drive through Centralia PA, it's a freaking post-apocalypse ghost town.
There's a mine fire under the town and smoke rises up though the forest of charred trees, reminds me of the movie Silent Hill.

Ummm…false. Ashland does not have nuclear power plants…nor have there ever been any located there in the past. The smoke stacks that you see/smell from I-64 is part of an oil refinery that has been there for damn near 100 years.

In fact, I'm pretty sure there are exactly zero nuclear power plants currently operating in the state of Kentucky. There is however a uranium enrichment plant in Chief Paducah-ville though. Pretty sure that's why @maverick1's cursed pool glows at night.

This is it, isn't it? Thanks for that clarification. It always smelled like ****. Wait. Does West Virginia or Ohio have them since some of the cities are right beside Ashland?

I know I saw smoke stacks bellowing flames at night when I went home with a friend over in Ironton. I think it was some steel smelter.

Took a new job that required me to make trips to Ashland. First time I returned, the smell (which I recalled from living in eastern Ky 30 years earlier) hit me in the face. Not sure if it's from the refinery, if it's from some steel operation, etc....but it's a distinct "sulphur" type smell.

I worked many years in southeastern Ky, Some of the finest folks i ever knew come from there, truly the salt of the earth. But having said that, i wouldn't/couldn't live there if you gave me the nicest house there

When you grow up in Eastern Kentucky, it usually goes one of two ways. You're either desperate to get out the first chance you get or you don't want to leave and just stay in this safety net.

When I was 18, I bounced. I couldn't do it anymore. The area lacks opportunities, there's no entertainment and it's just so depressing. Some people enjoy it but I couldn't do it.

I was born and raised in EKY and went to work in the mines after high school. After my first child was born, I didn't want him to grow up there. Got out soon thereafter and glad I did. I could have never been as successful in my business if I had stayed there.

That's right. You don't get the same opportunities back there nor do your kids. Our town didn't have crap.

I also enjoy not having to drive 10 hours to get one week worth of enjoyment now like we did as kids. Now my family and I can do something new every day if we wanted. There's a beach, amusement parks, pro sports, great restaurants, great places for hiking or snowboarding and a ton of other things.

I also wish as a kid, we could have played hockey, lacrosse or things outside the top three sports.
