Hey I've got a great idea, lets ruin some bourbon by putting eggs and milk in it! Ish is turrible.
Worked at a dairy (wholesale milk company) in college. I was responsible for ordering and inventory management. I had to deal with egg nog and boiled custard during the holidays. I despise both of them because of that - they may have well as touched me in a bad place for all the trauma they caused.
I asked the same question this year. My wife's family is all about boiled custard and they serve it as a beverage with the dessert. I am not a fan (too sweet). To me, it tastes like melted french vanilla ice cream.
Apparently, eggnog is a simple mixture whereas boiled custard is actually cooked? Eggnog is considered a beverage and is usually thinner in consistency, usually contains a spice like nutmeg and is more often used as a vehicle for alcohol. They told me the two are nothing alike, but damned if I can tell a difference.
Egg nog is a once a year drink. Similar to a mint julep. If done properly, it's great. Alton Brown's recipe is really good.
