Eligibility question

In considering which of our players will redshirt or play this year, I started wondering if the Davis twins participate in track and field in the coming spring, will that count as a year of eligibility played? It's a different sport, but played in the same year, so I was wondering if that would mean they will be sophomores in terms of eligibility next year, so maybe it makes no sense to redshirt this fall.

Does anybody know about this? Thanks in advance.

I think that they could redshirt in football and play in track, and have 4 years of eligibility left in football next year but only 3 in track.

I base this on Greg Paulus and personal experience.

Paulus played 4 consecutive years of basketball at Duke, and then a 5th year of football at Syracuse. (Basketball Stats and Football Stats).

At Wayne State I saw a few athletes (girl's track thrower that later joined the softball team is the main one I remember) do the same thing without a transfer to a new school.

If I'm wrong, someone feel free to correct me.

Great to know, thanks Yosarrian! I had forgotten about Paulus - he was a hell of an athlete coming out of high school.

I wouldn't take it as the gospel truth, but I think that's how it would work. A quick google search returned a lot of info breaking down the 5 to play 4 rule, but I couldn't find anything that would indicate that playing two sports would alter the 5 years to play 4 years of your sport.

Once you're enrolled with full-time (emphasis on full-time) classes, your 5 year eligibility clock begins to participate in 4 seasons/sport. So they can participate in track this year while redshirting in football.

They'd have 3 seasons left for track (can take a redshirt too) and 4 seasons left of football.

Edit, my bad Yoss didn't see your response, you're correct.
