Waiting for a guy to come through here saying "Strategic retention by Stoops..........."

Disheartening. Time, and time, and time again, I feel like DJ Elliot has proven to be an incompetent DC. If he makes me eat my words, that's terrific, but I truly don't think he's capable of that.

smh

there's that line of doing the same thing and expecting different results is one definition of insanity.

so.........another couple of years of third and fifteen....whoops first down. Or not recognizing a running quarterback and adjusting formation to slow him down. Or not making half time adjustment. Or not stopping a team on fourth down.
bend don't break you bet.

If we had an offense, the defense wouldn't look nearly as bad.
Offense had some problems this year for sure...but the UL, UT, Miss St, EKU were just awful defensive debacles. Also last year, the offense was not bad in 2014 and the defense spit the bit bigtime last year as well.

Hopefully Stoops will put his touch in this side of ball and make DC a moot point...but Elliott offers little help to Stoops job at UK.

I really didn't expect anything else. That's his buddy. Stoops has made more than enough money to last him a lifetime and why break up a friendship? Stoops will take more control of the defense and Elliot will continue to cash checks. That's how the buddy system of college football works. I also wouldn't be surprised is the new OC doesn't have heavy ties to the head man. Who else would come as an OC if the head coach is going to determine what is ran?

Just my opinion but the defense seemed to give out once it was obvious they were getting abosolutely no support from the offense. Especially didn't help when the offense started nearly every game with a turnover and a short field. The defense played well enough to win several games this year but the offense has to score too

The defense has plenty of opportunities to get off the field, they are pathetic. 3rd and 15 gets converted by the opposing team time and time again. Elliots arse should be gone, if Dawson is gone, the DC should be out of here too !

Defensive players have all been developed and gotten better. We're actually a good defense against traditional offense. If we can figure out how to defend the read, we'll be in good shape. And we're not alone in that boat. All of cfb is trying to defend that.

Had a chance to get Pelini and let it go..Typical of uk football. Eliot could have stayed as a position coach. Wow

Lousy Coaches hire their incompetent buddies. Winning Coaches are ruthless and look out for themselves.
Stoops is a lousy coach & Elliott is totally incompetent. Towles was right, Dawson was the sacrificial lamb. It was easy to do beause there were no ties to Stoops. I am afraid that Stoops has sealed his fate and will be a rich man in 2 years but end up like almost every other UK Head Coach retired or go back to be a position coach.

Sure, they had plenty of opportunities because they were out there too much. And as much as they were out there they still shaved 3-4 pts/game off from the previous yrs. And they did it with loads of underclassmen playing on the 2-deep. If our offense was even slightly better we'd be sitting 7-5 right now and people wouldn't be calling for anyone's head.

The defense absolutely is nowhere where it needs to be though. Lots of room for improvement.

I don't know if it matters who the DC is because this team is still going to have major issues up front. I like the secondary and LBs but when you look at the DL it is hard to get excited. A good OC can hide talent issues with creative play calling but on defense if you aren't solid up front you can't scheme around that.

The more of these threads I read the more I realize that some UK fans simply won't be happy until Mark Stoops (and probably Barhnart) are gone. People are literally creating issues to complain about just to they can continue to *****.

I give it, oh, maybe 2 years and this will be accepted fact. "Pelini was dying to come and Stoops said no!" Right up there with Bigfoot, "Schnellenberger would've turned it all around", Santa Clause and "Mike Pratt and some boosters told Barnhart to go sit in the corner while they made the Calipari hire".

This. I have a hard time blaming the defense. I know the numbers were bad but the offense 3 and outted so much that you really shouldn't expect much else. Also the defense was a bit bend but don't break. They did good around the goal line but they were just backed up against it too often because of bad offense and poor special teams. Still most the bad stuff that people see came after the defense collapsed at some point during the game. The defense was really only unacceptable against EKU, MSU and Tenn. Other than that the defense played winning football for most the game until they hit a wall.

Part if that is true but you can't ignore the poor scheming against UL that made Jackson look like Mike Vick.

Our countless times guys running in and out from the sideline looking like a Chinese fire drill.

The trick play against Vandy

This wonderful play against Miss St.

DJ is in over his head much like Stoops, he just continues to make the same mistakes.

Everyone acts like the head coach shouldn't have input on play calling yet when I read one of the articles about Mangino he was fired in part from Iowa St because he and the head coach disagreed on play calls. That would imply that a head coach might have input on the play calls.

Actually, the more I read these theads the more I feel like people don't want football to even exist at UK. No coach has ever made them happy and never will.

No one is ignoring anything. But if our offense was better there wouldn't be any threads talking about how bad our defense was even though it still has improvement to be made.

Speak for yourself. It's always been aggravating to me that dual-threat quarterbacks smash DJ Elliot's defense.

^He's not the only one. Our defenses have been crushed by mobile QBs for decades. I certainly don't like it either but I feel we have far more pressing issues.

IMHO, Elliot's return is as surprising, perhaps more so, than Dawson being canned after one year. After three years and a significant upgrade in talent, Elliot's defense is no more sound fundamentally than when he started.!!!

I suppose we can all hope that the light turns on and all of a sudden our defensive players reduce their arm tackling to a minimum, our defensive ends and linebackers actually put pressure on our opponent's QB on passing plays and protect the edge on running plays, our defensive backs figure out how and when to look back for the pass, we actually get aligned correctly most of the time, we find a way to get off the field on third-and-long, etc.
