Glad he went with the good guys. A .500 coach (with limited talent) is not too desirable for enticing any players looking for a spot to land and contribute.

I have to believe that the NCAA will really lower the boom on Tennessee, so the mass exodus from the Vols' roster could be even more significant.
I wonder if any of the transfers were recipients of Tennessee's crimes.

Hard to say. On the Vol's board there is some talk but that'd be hard to prove until the NCAA comes down. But we are indeed getting some talent. My concern is chemistry and how it'll all mesh. Locker room stuff is really important when making a title run.

Not a lot of excitement on the Vols board. About 50/50 but very little giddiness. My good buddy from Johnson City, who bleeds orange, shocked me. I asked him if he was looking forward to having a Sooner coach his team. His answer “he will probably be as good as we’ve had the last 15 years”. Not very confidence coming from a historically 5 figure booster.

Fulmer's last year was 2008 and he had a 152-52 record and a 96-34 SEC record....and eight 10-win seasons over those 17 years.
Since then, the Vols are 73-85, with Butch Jones having the most success with a 34-27 record (2013-2017).
Somehow, someway, Tennessee just can't get out of its own way in finding a head coach. I can't see how this program has slid down into mediocrity for so long. Something ain't going right.
At least OU had managed to go 61-50-2 from 1989-1995 after Switzer was forced to resign. Gibbs' team managed a 44-23-2 record during those 7 years.

From having spent many days on the golf course with three of our foursome being diehard Tennessee fans, the take I came away with is Alabama, Florida and Georgia have them thinking the SEC allows the Vols an excuse. All they do is talk about their schedule instead of the real reasons that they lose. I don’t know what the real reasons are but it ain’t the SEC’s fault.

Add the fact that even during mediocrity, they haven't slipped in recruiting. They have remained a perennial top 10 recruiting team, so that makes their descension even weirder.

I've literally had a Tennessee fan say to me, "you take Arkansas, Tennessee, or even Mississippi State and put them in the Big 12 and they'd win it every year."

That's the unprecedented level of delusion and stupidity we're dealing with here.

Jesus, there’s more of them than I thought. Lol. I’ve heard similar rants from southern friends and family regarding the B12.

Two words. Nick. Saban. At lesst in my opinion. Bama has dominated the SEC and has every school chasing them. Some quit. Most get fired for their efforts of trying. Heuepel isn't the guy to unseat Saban. Even if Saban was to retire on Heupel's watch as the Vols HC, the Vols won't replace them as the new leader of the SEC. Heupel can be a steady hand but the guy just doesn't like to recruit. There is no fire in that belly to do so.

I think that's where those bags of McDonald's, filled with cash came in

I hear you.
I was more pointing to the oddity that they have the Jimmy's and the Joe's, but they have still been pretty baseline-average for the last 20+ years. They can't blame not having the players. In fact, the talent they've had would say just about anyone (including some dumb dogs I've had) could have coached them to the records they've produced over the last couple of decades.

Tennessee needs to get better outside of trying to beat Alabama whether it’s with Heupel or anyone else. No one can compare Heupel to Saban. Tennessee knows that.

The only hot portal news was that we were bringing Big Kat Bryant on board from Auburn. A starting DE no less to address the huge loss of Perkins.
