I remember he an Leroy were almost inseparable. He was such a stud. I think he was the beginning of the run of champions that when we won the Big 8 in 1978 over Iowa State in the Monosmith upset Santana and then Jimmy Jackson's pin.

Back in those days I’m pretty sure that the “year around diet/lifestyle” was not in effect….

…..After The Fox closed one Saturday night, I gave Eric a ride to where he wanted (assuming his rental house - I had just met him)….there was a typical after hours party gathering, and evidently Eric was hungry!

He went straight to the fridge, grabbed a raw steak still in its packaging & proceeds to fist-grip it and chomp down…Yum! Yum! 🥴🥩

I’m very sadden to hear of Eric’s passing and little disheartened with the passing of anyone near my age.

I want to say that there are/were two wrestlers that I credit for my original interest and finally, love for the sport of Collegiate Wrestling; First, Dave Schultz and then Eric Wais. My first match was the second bedlam match of the 77-78 season and I was immediately enthralled with Dave; he never stopped moving during the whole match. Either jumping rope, jogging or riding the bike accept when he wrestled. He is the reason I went to the BIG-8 in Gallagher a week or two later and what happened there really put the hook in me.

Dave transferred before the 78-79 and I was very disappointed but I immediately switched to Eric, I loved way Eric wrestled. The only thing I really knew about wrestling were things I had to unlearn from LeRoy McGurk but I was pretty sure that the term “Cross-Face” was coined for Eric Wais the same way I thought Leg-Ride came from Mike Sheets (later the Tech-Fall). He was brutal on top and I loved it. Leroy, Charles Shelton and Ricky Stewart were good and the rest of the team was pretty solid (all eventual AA's except Aufleger & Duell) but Eric was the man. I sure that he was ranked #1 when he went down with a knee injury and the team dropped from #2 to something like #7. I was devastated.

A great loss then and a great loss. I’ll even forgive him (once again) for coaching for the gommers. RIP

The first recruiting class for the Cowboys that I was aware of was LeRoy Smith, Eric Wess and Aufleger. Two National Champs out of that class.

He and Jimmy Jackson ran the bar called JJ's (where the hideaway is now), I was playing pool there one night and had won a few games and a guy with his own pool stick bet $10 on our game.

I was down to the 8 ball with 4 balls of the other guy still on the table and the guy said I bet you $50 you can't make that shot. It was a 2 banker with the Q ball just to touch the 8 ball, as I was looking the shot over Eric walked up to me and said can you make that shot and I said sure as heck can. He said you make it we will collect the $50 and split 50/50 I said sure, as luck would have it, I actually made the shot. As the guy was trying to make a quick getaway both JJ and Eric stopped him and said you own him $60, $10 for the game and $50 for that shot so empty you pockets onto the pool table. He happily compiled.

The was a total of about $27.00 that fell out of his pockets and they quickly picked up the cash and let him go, I said looks like my share is $13.50 they said no, you owe us $3.00, he was short. After a long pause they both started laughing and bought me a beer.

What a great story. Thank you for sharing.
