That says way more about the Euros than it does the NBA.

Euros have a lot going for them: only once every four years, each country’s best players on the same team, big name teams in the finals, reasonable game times (for us), a large percentage of Americans identify theancestry with the two nations in the finals, etc. etc.

This year’s NBA teams are the 11th and 35th TV markets. The games go until damn near midnight. There are 2.5 bonafide stars: Giannis, Chris Paul (which a lot of people seem to hate) and Devin, who is not quite yet a household name to casual fans.

The NBA ratings were going pretty well when there were marquee franchises (in terms of market size and/or player names) in previous rounds. Now it’s got what most in NBA circles consider two small market franchises with players that don’t bring out the casual fans. Not surprising the ratings aren’t good.

Finals ratings ranked virtually every year the Duncan era Spurs were in the Finals, a team also than bunch of players that casual fans didn’t care about.

Same **** happened the year immediately following Jordan retiring after his second three-peat. When your big ratings draws aren’t on TV, ratings suffer.

Well yes, but it's a Euro competition for Euro's #1 sport vs. NBA being a USA product for a USA invented sport with a greater USA spectator following. Net, speaks volumes about NBA product quality to me.

I'm must be in the super-minority. Only pro sport I set aside time to watch is NBA with the occasional golf, tennis and mma (only when friends purchase the UFC pay-per views).

I used to watch NHL, MLB and NFL all the time. Haven't seen an NHL game in close to 25yrs, MLB in at least 20yrs (did go to a Reds game a few weeks ago because someone gave my wife and i diamond club seats) and watch NFL if there is absolutely nothing else I'm doing or there is a super bowl get-together.

Over the years, i've just lost interest. Never had any interest in soccer.

It's not just basketball. This years major league baseball all-star game had it's lowest TV ratings ever. This is what you get when dumb athletes stick their nose in politics.

The finals have been outstanding, and the NBA product has improved tremendously over the past 5-10 years. More level playing field, lots of fun superstars, better style of play.

Luckily it’s possible for me to watch sports and not be overly consumed to politics/social causes. Some of you should try it. It’s lots of fun.
The ratings don’t show it, but you’re right about the finals this year. I also think it’s refreshing that LeBron or the Warriors aren’t in it. Good to see some fresh blood in there. And Giannis is just unbelievable.

I'm as interested in the Finals as I ever am but have been unable to watch games 3 and 4 because I was doing other things (was in Chicago last weekend, went out to Waterfront Wednesday concert in Louisville yesterday), and gonna miss games 5 and 6 unless I'm in a bar or something where they're on - wife and I going to Denver for 4 days. After a year+ of not being able to do much, I'm taking every opportunity to get out of the house and out of town and not prioritizing being in front of a TV.

Viewership for Game 4 of the NBA Finals on ABC was up 35 percent from last year’s Game 4, according to Nielsen. The ABC broadcast averaged 10,254,000 viewers, peaking with 12,559,000 viewers from 11:15-11:30 p.m. ET.
The Game 4 audience was up 14 percent vs. the Game 3 audience. Through four games, the 2021 NBA Finals is averaging 9,311,000 viewers, up 34 percent from last year.
The article will be wrong by the end of game 5 and the NBA Finals will have an even bigger audience for games 6 and 7.

I know the athleticism is better currently. But, I don't like the style of play that much. Too much iso, too much pick-and-roll and way too many jacked up 3s. Also, it seems there are more crybaby players who ***** at almost every call, flop, celebrate every basket like it's the game winner, etc. The game just doesn't interest me like it used to.

Oddly, the people bitching about slavery are counting on money from a country still using slave labor...
And slavery didn't die in the USA with the passage of the 13th amendment. It was just moved to the prisons and abused my American companies. Still continues to this day.

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

You realize that people are litter ali sold on auction blocks in Africa right now and China is forcing people into slave labor for their religious beliefs right now? Comments like this are so off with reality that I wonder what you actually do in life. People going to jail for a crime, whether you think its a crime or not, is not the same as forcing people into labor for just some reason. They are harvesting the organs of Uyghur muslims right now. They work them in ****** conditions until a blood type matches and then they kill them and harvest their organs. Nobody in the NBA will say a word about this because of money but they feel compelled to talk about how bad America is.

Just sick.

Pro sports go on too long. Hockey playoffs and basketball playoffs in mid July are pretty ridiculous in my opinion, hard to get excited during the middle of summer
Yeah I've been like hell yeah there's a game on tonight, then don't wanna sit down for it when it's time. I luvs sports in general but its losing the pull on me that it used to have. UK gamedays are different, I'm a animal them days and luv GameDays and meals with friends. Most people around me are alot older then me so they don't act like they give a **** bout stuff like us around the fan boards here do. We talk here bout all UK and I check these boards 100 times a day most all week.

I know what's going on in China.

That doesn't change the facts of what have been occurring in America ever since the Civil War ended. If you can't handle the truth then that's a personal problem you should look into resolving.

Yep. MLB pissed a **** load of people off by cowtowing to the libs by moving moving game from Atlanta to Denver over the Georgia voting laws.

Meanwhile, none of the idiots who thought they'd won a political victory with this bothered to mention that Colorado already has the exact same laws in place that Georgia was moving to implement to ensure the sanctity of the ballot box. Absolutely disgusting.

You sound just like me. When it's time for the Cats.....I go from Bruce Banner to The Hulk 😅 I'm still a big Reds and Bengals fan, but I listen to the Reds games on radio muuuuch more often than I watch, and I watch the Bengals on Sundays, but my testosterone doesn't really get pumping. I don't live or die with them. I never really have. That has more to do with how the franchise has been run than anything political.

Any idea on last few games ratings? Did they get a bump as expected? Giannis was unstoppable last night on both ends of the court. If he could consistently hit FTs, he could go for 35 a night in his sleep.

Looks like Game 5 ratings were above the abysmal 2020 Game 5's but just barely half of 2019's Game 5. Couldn't find last nights ratings yet on the 'net but this year's NBA Finals will almost assuredly be among the 5 least watched finals. Too bad, as the games were pretty good (what little I watched of them, of course). Maybe NBA basketball in mid-July is not such a good idea. Or, maybe we're all just a bit worn out with too much coverage of too many sports.

The New York Times editors respond.....Thanks for the brilliant insight, I'll sleep better tonight, for sure.
