The Purple Aces come to Lexington for a 1 day tilt. This one should be especially fun because we don't really know who will be on the bump for UK. We should find that out here in about an hour and a half when they release the lineup. Until then, I'll do a small preview:
Evansville comes in at 3-4. They had a very strong start to the season as they actually took down top 5 ranked Georgia in game 1 of a 4 game set. They then lost the next 3 before taking 2 of 3 from Northern Illinois. My guess is that Donovan Schultz is going to be the starter for the Aces. He pitched in one of the Georgia games, but didn't pitch this past weekend, so I have to guess he's their 4th starter. I can't really call him a midweek guy because Evansville is playing just 1 midweek game this season... tonight. That's right, tonight is their only midweek tilt all year.
Donovan Schultz is a 6'2 205 pound freshman lefty out of Wisconsin. He has appeared in 2 games this season, the first as a starter against Georgia in their last game of the series. In that one he went 4 innings giving up 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned. He walked 3 and struck out 3. So, a pretty solid outing for him as a starter. He came in for a relief appearance on Sunday against NIU throwing 1.1 innings where he gave up 3 hits, 2 earned runs while getting a pair of walks and strikeouts each. He should feature a fastball in the mid to upper 80s as well as a changeup and a curveball. He mixes pitches well and is effective at hiding the baseball with his windup.
At the dish, the Purple Aces have struggled, hitting just .207 as a team. They have relied largely on keeping games under control on the mound rather than with a lot of hitting prowess. They have scored over 5 runs in just 1 game this season. So, UK pitching can certainly show off in this one. SS Simon Scherry is their leading hitter going .304 through the young season. He has 4 doubles, but like many of these Aces is prone to the strikeout. OF Troy Beilsmith is likely to lead off, he is hitting just below .300 on the year and has a home run and a double. Most of the Aces won't run, but OF Kenton Crews will take his chances, he is 2 for 3 on stolen base attempts. Again, many of these hitters are prone to the K. They have some games where they only have a handful, but 2 of their last 3 games they had 12 each. As usual, limit the walks and you significantly hurt their chances of scoring.
