A's and B+'s for the first 5 weights honestly f's for the rest except Gabe, 197 not too bad at least he showed interest in engaging. Caleindo, Ferrari honestly the biggest disappointments.

Caleindo couldn't wait for the periods to end.

Ferrari showed that 7 man on one knee is well a Ferrari move, wtaf stalled all freaking match.

125 PETERSON 6 vs 2 Felt he came out aggressive NEED to SCORE with MERKEL!!! Wrestled pretty TUFF did a few good things but could not score from feet! 65

133 AYALA 8 vs 4 A lot of what you would expect from Drake in 1st, rode for 40 sec start TWOOO Gives up a TD and has no answer 65

141 BAILEY 11 vs 7 used a short drag to get 1st TD which was nICE Good 1st gets riden out in a BAD 2nd. Finds a way to do just enough to WIN, he is better then he showed but I give 100

149 BLOCK 17 vs 1 Scores 1st TD which was good IOWA down start 2nd and they let him ride parallel the ENTIRE period !?!?!?? Fun down start 3rd out quick and while it looked like a possible upset for a sec,,,, went bad and we fight out of a bow and arrow 65

157WILLIAMS 12 vs 3 Showed good D on first shot, could not finish his own deep shot Some scrambles and stuff but we can see a pattern of them being more aggressive and confident and scoreing mostly off of crap!!!! 65

165 CALIENDO 3 vs 1 looked like a BOXING match to start showed some good D but no O, got taking down just because MessyShit was pushing the whole time. A late TD in 2nd sealed the match, Not showing any O 65

174 ARNOLD UR vs 1 More of the same BS some hand fighting to Lil ***** ankle pick TD. When this is happening, you are losing the HAND FIGHTENING/ getting out of position/ not getting to your O!!! Got some escapes against a good rider so that was good but agin NO O 66

184 FERRARI 1 vs 4 DON'T want to say I told you but......... Have NO clue what he was trying to do/ what the plan was????? 60

197 SAMPSON UR vs 1 Did what he could, like his name No grade

Heavy KRUETER 5 vs 13 AGAIN I am lost!?!??! NO idea what was/is going on!?!?!? 60

I’ll give it a shot

125 - last year 1 takedown for, this year 3 takedowns against. D
133 - 2x finalist vs true freshman, one true slide by attempt in 3rd and nothing else. D-
141 - stole a TD in first, almost got carvered, Davis overrated. B-
149 - over matched, stop going to the seat belt, stay on the leg. C
157 - no answer for the true freshman. D+
165 - 7 loses in a row, same approach. Messenbrink is different but needs a different approach, coaching needs to do something different. C+
174 - completely controlled match, Gabe outmatched. Meet was out of hand, PK is starter through end of year, gotta give him the opportunity to figure out the opponent as he’ll see him at BT and NCAA. C
184 - on a knee, no offense. F
197 - should have seen Endenne. N/A
HWT - no offense, no fight, athlete regression. F

Overall, team gets a B. PSU has an unreal lineup and many matches were close and came down to the 3rd period. I liked the Hawks fight even though the team outcome was lopsided.

The ref was a PSU/Cael Homer and someone should tell these refs PSU doesn't need their help. Do have to say he protected Williams from injury via Duke garbage.

Peterson: B. Wrestled tough, showed he is there. Disappointed he didn't get that initial takedown.
Ayala: B. Active and good defense. Can turn it his way by tourneys.
Bailey: B. Great takedown, could have racked up the score with some lungs.
Block: C. Great early takedown on one of the best. Isn't on Haines level.
Williams: B. Didn't appear to get gassed. Refs/NCAA better watch that Duke, he is out to hurt people.
Cali: C. About as competitive as you can be against MM. Cali going to need big move for fall or never wins.
Gabe: C. Good defense. Him and PK are most dedicated Hawks.
Angelo: C. Lost to Natty champ. Has to get to offense on feet earlier or no room for error.
Brody: NA. Shouldn't have been put in that position but it is what it is.
BK: D. Lingering injury or whatever, he is a shell of what he should be.

Angelo did not lose to a national champ last night.
He’s just projecting forward to the end of this season. LOL.

Here are Iowa grades from a Penn State fan:

125 Peterson. B. Came out aggressive and tried to bully Lilledahl, who is a skinny technician, not a brawler. He did that last year and it worked. This year it didn’t, but he’s just not as good as Lilledahl, and he did what he could. He tried to set a tone, and if he had pulled it out, it would be a different match.

133 Ayala. B-. It’s weird to say a two time finalist is at a talent deficit, but here we are at 133. The influx of world class talent this year is going to make it difficult for either returning finalist to get back there. Blaze is a kid who beat the #1 ranked NCAA wrestler and made the Olympic team as a 16 year old high school junior. He may be the best recruit Cael has ever gotten, and he’s no lock for the finals either. I can’t wait for 133 at nationals this year. Ayala did what he could and can still beat anyone with a little good fortune.

141 Bailey. B+. A+ first period, C rest of match. Both guys gassed, but credit to Bailey for stopping backing up to avoid the last stall that would have sent the match to OT. Davis had no offense at that point, he was just looking for another stall.

149 Block. B-. Great job getting the takedown, but in what is a recurring theme, he’s good, but just not good enough. Did a good job avoiding the 6 in the bow and arrow. Contrast that with Dillard vs Antrell who gave up and pinned himself in the last second after giving up the TD.

157 Williams. C. Was controlled from start to finish, but again, there’s a talent gap here and Duke is world class.

165 Caliendo. B-. Respect for not turtling and trying to avoid bonus, but Mesenbrink is the Hodge favorite with a 100% bonus rate this year, so staying aggressive is just going to open you up to get majored. Still, it’s good to see guys who are willing to keep going for it and aren’t scared of MDs. He’s still the second best 165 this year.

174 Gabe. C. Opposite of Caliendo, Gabe does pretty much nothing and plays for 4-1 SV matches. Both lose, but I have much more respect for Cali’s approach.

184 Ferrari. D. I’m so glad they hit him for stalling going to a knee. Here’s one step worse than Gabe, he’s playing for 2-1 TB wins. Someone on the PSU board said he’s going to be the first guy to never give up a TD and still be a 0x champion. He’s better than that. I hope they make him get up and wrestle instead of stall more often. It’ll make him better. He should win this match.

197 Sampson. C. It is what it is. “C” for average considering the outcome was exactly as expected. Someday, he can tell his grandkids he wrestled a national champion.

285 Kueter. D. He’s regressing. He needs to quit watching Angelo & Gabe stall through every match. Mirasola is no pushover, but Kueter is far better athletically and isn’t outsized. He needs to win that.

Overall. C. The lightweights did what they could. The heavies were disappointing.

To me, it is not that they lost, it was the general lack of effort. If you are going to lose, go down guns a blazing. Ferrari was my biggest disappointment. I hate the look when Drake and Ferrari are on a knee. It screams, “I won’t shoot but you won’t get my leg”. Not a great mindset.

You’re far too kind, I’m not. 10 matches and Iowa emerges with two takedowns. 2! Failing grades all around. It’s safe to say Iowa wrestling is no longer relevant and our aggressive entertaining style left CHA a long, long time ago.
