That had to be *absolutely* terrifying. Where do you go? Just wait to be vaporized?
My neighbors went scrambling for the hills.

Everyone's phones sent out the alert and people were getting panicked.

Local TV never broke their telecasts, just a quick banner and voice to find shelter and that this was not a drill.

We filled the bathtub and other containers with water.

People are now realizing how woefully unprepared they are for any catastrophe. (Me included)

If NK launches on HI then it's either a EMP burst in the upper atmosphere OR it's a hydrogen bomb

If you're in Honolulu and you get THAT warning -- You're not going ANYwhere really

I mean you COULD get to higher ground and avoid the thermal and blast waves from a nuke ..... but you're going to catch fallout and come home to a f'ing mess

if a modern ICBM with MIRV capabilities were launched (Rus / CN) - then it comes down to how they program the device's multiple warheads

technically a modern ICBM could launch from China (one missile) and deploy up to 6 or 8 independently targetable warheads

which would mean no more Hawaii

Did people rush out to the store for milk & bread?

A missile warning like that would make me think of Neil DeGrasse Tyson being interviewed about meteor impacts. Someone asked him where he would want to be in case of an extinction level meteor impact. He emphatically said that the best place to be would be directly under it because the aftermath would be horrible.

I get that message I'm pulling out a lawn chair and a cooler.

China isn’t launching a warhead at the US. No one is except maybe the look in North Korea. Most of the civilized world has come to the realization that production of nuclear warheads was a mistake.

Generally agree
I could see China and the us potentially exchanging low yield / tactical nukes in a a”limited regional conflict “ though

And they have just brought a new ICBM online with MIRV capability

So many may see those weapons as regretful - but they’re still being produced and modernized

The continuing advances in smaller designs with limited blast effects is (IMP) so they CAN be used

Yeah I don't see it. I think most of the world is focused on making money and preventing terrorism. We live in the 21st century, war between any 2 industrialized nations is going to be the end of the world. While leaders will continue to spend money on defense and they love rattling their sabers like high school jocks, when push comes to shove it just ain't gonna happen. If it does we're all toast. I am optimistic enough to think enough people understand this to not do it.

I don’t anticipate a massive nuclear exchange that would decimate the planet either

But I absolutely believe there’s a planned and purposeful shift away from emphasis on sovereign nations in general (and in parallel -an end to the status quo inluence of / reliance on the USA and the dollar)

So I think in that historical shift of the balance of power— the probability increases for regional conflicts and possibly a uniquely nasty exchange or two

The point of this scare to me is that people were totally, or nearly so, scared due to NK having nukes & missiles. Get them out their hands & most would have immediately recognized this couldn't be true.

I think the problem many nations are going to find increasingly in the future is that there isn’t much patriotism out there either. People care more about their life than some vague nation they are a part of. Older generations hate this, but the NFL protests revealed a lot about Millenials. The +50 crowd will not be able to count on them to fight a war for them. Another draft in this country would be the end of this country imo.

yes the government really does assume you are stupid enough to think "pushed the wrong button" is believable.

You may have a really good point there

On one hand the notion of national identity is so universal - that I don’t believe it just neatly fades - uniformly- across the planet

But I think what you’ve cited is real - and a powerful cultural factor to consider

It seems that what you’re describing could come in “2 forms “?

Apathy

Or

A “ globalist “ type worldview

Or better yet - just an economic mercenaries type mindset

Does that sound fairly reasonable?

I would run into the ocean and go under once you see the missle. I'm thinking you are fine once you come up if it already hit on land.

I don't think NK could hit their own capital with a missile. Well, wait, they did accidentally hit one of their own cities with a failed launch. So yeah, I wouldn't worry too much. If they could, in theory actually successfully hit the Islands, like Wyvern said, best to sit back and watch the show cause it would be over with quick.

Occam's razor.

By the way, if we were to lay waste to NK nuclearily ( made up that word) what effect would it have on Japan with fallout and whatnot? Or could we pretty much handle things with conventional weapons?
