I had the same game experience with my dad in 1971, an OU win, 48-27.
Ironically, my first OU game was the Texas game in 1958, also with my dad, in which Royal used the new 2-point conversion rule to beat OU 15-14. Texas scored first, went for two to go up 8-0. OU answered but failed in its 2-point try making it 8-6. Then OU scored and made the 2-pointer and led 14-8. Texas scored on a sustained drive, kicked the PAT and held off the Sooners in the last 4 minutes.
So I saw the game that started OU’s 13 year drought and the 1971 game that ended it.
Mine too. I was a student manager for the 1971 Sooners. We had ten managers, but only one or two managers made the trip with the team. This was my trip. I still have the team intinerary, that included all the hotel room assignments. Two of us made that trip.
Most of the managers made the trip to Dallas and worked the game. But most of the guys wanted to party the night before, maybe spend the night with their girlfriend in Dallas. Then get to the Cotton Bowl independently the next day. I did that the other three years.
That was Jack Mildren's senior year. Jack scored OUr final touchdown, which kind of settled the issue. We hadn't got the defense figured out by the second Saturday of October, but we scored a lot, and Greg Pruitt's run on the counter dive, where he left the jock strap of Longhorn safety Alan Lowry on the turf around the 20, was a highlight. 48-27.
After the game, Chuck Fairbanks was pumped. It was his first win as OU head coach over Texas. We'd beaten USC the previous game. This game showed we were truly back. Chuck was so pumped, he said, "Everybody who made the trip, gets a game ball!" That meant every player and coach. And a couple of managers. I had to do a little lobbying with Jack Baer, the old OU baseball coach, who had been the longtime football equipment guy, into making sure I got my autograph ball. Had it autographed personally myself.
2. for me would be the win over the Huskers in 2000.
3 KState in the 2000 CCG.
4. The GOTC. If only that last pass to Jon Harrison had a little more air under it.
5. One of the 2000 era wins over Texas. Probably 2013. 65-13 I think.
That was fun.
