They were used on me several times in high school in the mid 60’s. Best one was the time I was playing linebacker and didn’t get my head out of the way while tackling the fullback. Team called timeout. Out came the student trainer with the smelling salts. He was told to me to switch with the safety. Oh, and yes we did use leather helmets.

Back in the day, concussion diagnosis and treatment consisted of the "how many fingers am I holding up" test and getting a whiff of ammonia. Guess the number of fingers within two and you were good to go. "He only had his bell rung".
