He continued winning big games - home, away, bowl games until end of century, had a hiatus into a few bad years and then ascended back to upper echelon of college football.

He is the all-time winningest coach and still defines PSU around the world …positively for any fair-minded people (most).

Under Joe, PSU was 96-56 in Big Ten play. That's a 62% winning percentage.

I'd have PSU job right there with Florida as best available, each with the resources, history etc.. to succeed with right hire. Really comes down to the coach, and where they want to be, I don't see Kiffin in Happy Valley, but makes a ton of sense in Gainesville.

Winning games against laughing stock teams (your words, not mine). The league can’t be a laughing stock yet your team in that league is winning big games…you can’t have it both ways. And yes, 94 was a great season, but they still didn’t win the NC (which strengthens my point) and then it was pretty much all down hill from there. So either PSU got worse or the Big 10 improved and PSU didn’t.

Would they have done that if Bama had the same season PSU did? We both know the answer to that. They likely would have called that Bama team the greatest of all time, but because it was PSU, it was okay to give it to a lesser deserving coach out of pity. See a few years later when they gave a split NC to Michigan because it was Michigan…PSU couldn’t even get a split. You guys are making my point for me.

I recall the 92 Fiesta Bowl and 94 Citrus Bowls fondly, showing up as decently big dogs and running the Vols off the field in both.
Also recall playing the 96 Big 12 champs in the 97 Fiesta Bowl and blowing them out.
In the mid 90s until the turn of the century, Penn State did as much as anyone in the Big 10. From 1970 until 2000, did more.

Facilities, NIL, and coaching salaries ( IIRC last season composite staff was #1) are all in place. Fans are fired up after JF himself said best players, best staff in 12 yrs LTFI. Any top ten position is going to be rabid for big time wins. This is a big stage. Best bring your big boy pants.

The winningest coach in the history of college football couldn’t win a NC here for 25 years, but Franklin is the reason we couldn’t win one. There’s more lacking at PSU than you think.

When the regular season ended in ‘94, Bama also had a perfect record and was ranked #3. They then proceeded to lose the SEC CCG to UF and drop a few spots.

Otherwise, agree with the premise that PSU had generally not been looked at the same as other MNC contending teams throughout Paterno’s years.
