His last name gives him a platform. You know that. He ran to Nebraska radio soon after James was fired.
Had nothing to do with credibility, Joe was consideredAnd PSU’s lack of credibility continued to haunt him throughout his career even after he won two NC’s (see 1994). That’s kind of my point, there’s more working against PSU than just the coach.
One of the greatest offenses, if not the greatest offense. The defense, not so much. Still, on balance a great team that would have outscored just about anybody. The offense was in rhythm from day one and never looked back.Hogwash. 1994 was all about charity for Tom Osborne and blatant anti-PSU bias within Big10.
Any knowledgeable college football fan knew PSU>Nebraska. In fact 1994 PSU was one of college football’s greatest teams ever.
Under Joe, PSU was 96-56 in Big Ten play. That's a 62% winning percentage. Are you kidding? Joe came into the Big10 and ran the table in year 2 with one of college football’s greatest teams ever. For those who don’t remember, the Big10 at that point was a laughing stock - annually losing Rose Bowl and most other meaningful games.
He continued winning big games - home, away, bowl games until end of century, had a hiatus into a few bad years and then ascended back to upper echelon of college football.
He is the all-time winningest coach and still defines PSU around the world …positively for any fair-minded people (most).
No denying Kneebraska and Tommy Frazier were damn good, would have loved to see that one settled on the field. One of the greatest offenses, if not the greatest offense. The defense, not so much. Still, on balance a great team that would have outscored just about anybody. The offense was in rhythm from day one and never looked back.
I have a story about JayPa. I was with 2 of my roommates who were Little Sisters at a fraternity. We were at a party there and JayPa comes to the door wanting to get in. Well he wasn’t on the guest list. He insisted he be let in because as he said, “I’m Jay Paterno.” Well the brothers working the door basically said they didn’t care who the F he was and that he wasn’t on the list and to get the F off their property. “. True Story.
Even more amazing how grown men still have idols that they think were flawless humans.Amazing how many people still try to denigrate Paterno.
So, Chumboshifko started an account on 10/15. What is his previous handle? He has to be a retread from another name?
Look at the voters, many outside of Big 10 territory voted for Nebraska because Penn State has always had to fight the “eastern football” stigma.Hogwash. 1994 was all about charity for Tom Osborne and blatant anti-PSU bias within Big10.

Winning games against laughing stock teams (your words, not mine). The league can’t be a laughing stock yet your team in that league is winning big games…you can’t have it both ways. And yes, 94 was a great season, but they still didn’t win the NC (which strengthens my point) and then it was pretty much all down hill from there. So either PSU got worse or the Big 10 improved and PSU didn’t.Are you kidding? Joe came into the Big10 and ran the table in year 2 with one of college football’s greatest teams ever. For those who don’t remember, the Big10 at that point was a laughing stock - annually losing Rose Bowl and most other meaningful games.

I don’t disagree but the fact remains it was another year of not winning a NC because of a lack of respect for PSU. Do you think if Bama had the same season PSU did they would have given it to Osborne out of pity?1994 the pity NC.
Would they have done that if Bama had the same season PSU did? We both know the answer to that. They likely would have called that Bama team the greatest of all time, but because it was PSU, it was okay to give it to a lesser deserving coach out of pity. See a few years later when they gave a split NC to Michigan because it was Michigan…PSU couldn’t even get a split. You guys are making my point for me.Had nothing to do with credibility, Joe was considered
one of if not the best coach in the country by that point, it was all about getting DR. Tom his first ever title.
Amazing how many people still try to denigrate Paterno and Franklin.
If you’re talking about my posts, I am not denigrating Paterno….I’m pointing out that PSU has always been looked at by the nation as not quite at the same level as some other programs and that has worked against them winning more NC’s….just to point out that it’s about more than just a coach.Amazing how many people still try to denigrate Paterno.
East coast bias, then B10 BS.If you’re talking about my posts, I am not denigrating Paterno….I’m pointing out that PSU has always been looked at by the nation as not quite at the same level as some other programs and that has worked against them winning more NC’s….just to point out that it’s about more than just a coach.
I recall the 92 Fiesta Bowl and 94 Citrus Bowls fondly, showing up as decently big dogs and running the Vols off the field in both. Are you kidding? Joe came into the Big10 and ran the table in year 2 with one of college football’s greatest teams ever. Unless PS is playing an elite team like OSU, UO, UM or Indiana, make sure you sign up for the Oprah Winfrey Network. Don't want to miss any PS games.![]()
Which college football team has the most fans? Why (we think) Michigan edges Ohio State
We looked at tickets, revenue, social media and more to investigate an unanswerable question: Which college football team has the most fans?www.nytimes.com
We came in 6th most popular composite. There is a lot of fan support. So unhappy "noise" is magnified by hundreds of thousands.
Home attendance 2nd
Living Alumni- 2nd to Indiana
Merch Sales- 9th
Stub Hub tix demand- 7th
TV veiwership , rated over 4 mill views 2021-2024, 6th
Facilities, NIL, and coaching salaries ( IIRC last season composite staff was #1) are all in place. Fans are fired up after JF himself said best players, best staff in 12 yrs LTFI. Any top ten position is going to be rabid for big time wins. This is a big stage. Best bring your big boy pants.

This will be the case for many years. No more viewership bragging rights, who the hell needs or wants what we are selling?
I think Joe would have won another championship. There was alot of questionable calls by refs and time clocks over the years to make sure PSU wasn’t at the top of the big2The winningest coach in the history of college football couldn’t win a NC here for 25 years, but Franklin is the reason we couldn’t win one. There’s more lacking at PSU than you think.
I don’t disagree but the fact remains it was another year of not winning a NC because of a lack of respect for PSU. Do you think if Bama had the same season PSU did they would have given it to Osborne out of pity?
When the regular season ended in ‘94, Bama also had a perfect record and was ranked #3. They then proceeded to lose the SEC CCG to UF and drop a few spots.Would they have done that if Bama had the same season PSU did? We both know the answer to that. They likely would have called that Bama team the greatest of all time, but because it was PSU, it was okay to give it to a lesser deserving coach out of pity.

Again, it goes back to a lack of respect for the PSU program.I think Joe would have won another championship. There was alot of questionable calls by refs and time clocks over the years to make sure PSU wasn’t at the top of the big2
